I have a 2017 Bolt, coming up on 5 years of ownership, and I love this car. I have just over 112k miles on it. As mentioned, the main consideration I think for people is the slower fast charging. For me, it's not an issue. Almost all of my charging is at work/home on L2 (220v). So for my 120 mile round trip commute, this car has been great. We have also been taking it on a visit to my family down south. That trip does require quick charging once on the way down. We stop about halfway down to charge, and that stop does take 45 minutes about. Again, for us, this isn't an issue. It's a stop for lunch, restroom break, etc. It's not usually any more than we would have stopped around that location before. Then we charge while we are visiting (L2 either at the hotel if it has it or a charger near the hotel). And we hit that same fast charging spot on the way back home. As a result, this car has been great for us. That said, that won't be the case for everyone. If you would need to fast charge a lot and time is of the essence, probably want to consider the other options. But for the cost and what this car is/does, if it works for you, it's a great option! I do hate all the maintenance tho. All those tire rotations and I keep needing to add windshield cleaner... And don't get me started on replacing the cabin air filter! Sheesh! (Sorry, being silly. The lack of maintenance is so nice!)

I'm glad the Bolt is working out! It's a catch 22,how to make make affordability and faster charging....45 min is not bad on a roadtrip! How long will the battery last is #1 concern....and I hear the seats are not the best for a long trip?
@desiv1170
@desiv1170 2 жыл бұрын
@@kv1930 I've had no issues with the seats. I did add a gardening knee pad to the seats (was pretty simple to do) when I first got it. As for how long the battery will last, I know I had mine replaced because of the LG fiasco in December. By that time, it was over 4 years old and had over 100k on it (just over 100k). I'm sure there was some degradation, but nothing so bad I noticed. I'm sure it was less than 10 percent. So I would have expected that pack to still be over 150 miles in range after 10 years. Might or might not be enough for everyone's use case, but will definitely be enough for some people. (Note: That isn't in super cold areas. I don't live in one of those areas.) There are multiple people with over 200k and some over 300k on their packs already. These batteries are holding up better than some of the early predictions.

I'm glad the car is doing great! Forgive me for sounding negative,I do want to step into the future but I'm an old timer but in good health, I'm afraid 10 years down the road i won't have 10k to replace battery. I read that the Bolt is a nice computer car,but I have to admit EV's are fun to drive! How do you feel about the dreaded battery replacement?
@desiv1170
@desiv1170 2 жыл бұрын
@@kv1930 Valid question. I'm not worried about a battery replacement 10 years from ownership personally. Based on the current rate or degradation seen on the Bolts so far, this car will have in excess of 180 mile range 10 years from the issue of the battery. And that is on the low side. After 4+ years on my battery, I had less than 20 miles loss in range. That's 10%-ish. So guessing high and saying the battery is down to 75% in 10 years, on a car with a projected range of 259 miles, that would take it to 194 miles of range. Even if I guess high (my 180), that is still plenty of range. Also, Li-ion batteries usually degrade the most the first year or so, and then the degradation slows. So I feel pretty safe with that guesstimate. Also, there are some companies doing some 3rd party replacement packs for the original Nissan Leaf now. I would expecct, in 10 years, there will be something similar for the Bolt and other cars of this era. I expect in 10 years, a battery replacement would cost as much as a transmission replacement (google says that averages $2,600 now) or a bit more. But not $10k. Not in 10 years.

I've had my Bolt 2 years. Two things to keep an eye out for. Will the charging rate meet your needs? If you take lots of long trips, no it won't. 2nd point, make sure to test drive the Bolt EV on a rough road and see if the short wheel base jolts you around more than your liking. As for me, I'm going to buy it when the three year lease is up.

I'm considering purchasing a Bolt. Note: I don't know a ton about cars but I'm learning. What would you define as "long trips?" Like, how long are you thinking? I have somewhere I like to go (the home of a very dear friend) that is about ~40 minutes and 36 miles away (40 minutes back as well), would that be considered a long trip? Or are you thinking more like a more full-on road trip? I certainly don't take many of those. I love what I'm hearing about the Bolt so far but it would suck if it wasn't well equipped for a trip like the 40 minute one I mentioned.

Enjoyed the review. I own a 2017 Bolt, 30,000 miles on it with no issues. Use a 220v 30 amp, laundry room outlet, with a 24 amp charging cable. (24 amp continous on a 30 amp circuit for safety) Gains about 18 miles range per hour of charge time. I could get a faster charge time with a higher amp circuit but 18 mile per hour works perfectly for my situation. Cold weather reduces range, the heater reduces range, air-conditioning has a very small reduction on range. This car is saving me a fortune on gas, has surprisingly quick acceleration and is fun to drive. A somewhat basic EV but a super deal for the price.

We bought a 2022 Bolt EV 2LT two days ago. We ordered it about 6 weeks before after we found it on a dealer website as "in transit", meaning it was on the factory lot (with the new battery technology), waiting for shipment to the dealership. It was MSRP - but then we received a $5,900 rebate (just taken OFF the sticker price), a current GM promotion, plus a $500 voucher for electric charging with a major charging company. Effectively, we bought ~ $6,000 under MSRP. There are still deals out there, but we consider ourselves very lucky. We had looked at three other EV manufacturers, and two others gave us a sticker price option, one other offered us to buy the car $3,000 OVER MSRP - without allowing us to test drive their car (no, thank you!). We had the same test drive issue with the Bolt - we could only test drive a 2021 model, all other new Bolts are flying off the shelves, sold before they arrive at the dealerships. Our dealer had two of them arrive, one was bought by us, one by their own mechanics. Good luck to everyone who is trying to get a new car.

The 2023 Bolt EV is even quieter than a 2016 and 2023 Leaf specially when driving on bumpy roads. What I like about the Leaf is the low center of gravity maybe because both are slightly lower than the Bolt. The 2016 Leaf can only do 75 miles max on a full charge while the new 2023 Leaf can go up to 175 miles city or 135 miles highway. The Bolt as mentioned in the video can go up to 255 miles and has a larger field of view and packed with options such as 360° camera views, remote start and climate control, powered driver seat, heated steering wheel and seats, Bose 7 speaker sound system, wireless device charging, adaptive cruise control that will slow/speed up based on the distance vehicle in front with lane assist. Also comes with both level 1 and 2 charger via swappable adapter that’s attached to the charge box. Last fall I took my 2016 Leaf SV to my local Nissan for a covered battery replacement due to not charging all the way, always short by 4 bars. In the meantime time they gave me a 2023 Leaf free loaner to use but more than 6 months later they’re still waiting for the part. I took their offer to buy back my 2016 Leaf w/ 25k miles for $18,000. Last week I bought a 2023 Bolt EV for just over $34k after $1500 market fee. I originally considered buying a Nissan Leaf but found out it didn’t qualify for the tax incentive while the Bolt qualifies for $7500 tax incentive and Chevy still have the free level 2 outlet install worth up to $1000 or $500 EV charging credit promo

@@virtudesign In my Chevy Bolt EV I'm getting 305 real world miles with 24 mi to go (which was actually pretty close to estimated at 333 miles). I use the wheel paddle regen all the time to improve my range. My Wife managed to get 315 real world miles from her 2023 Kona EV. We use the free installed Chevy 220-240 power outlet to charge both Kona and Bolt ... very fast! Our Electricity bill for charging both cars has gone up $21 per month ... that's over $400/mo savings from our gas power car that we sold. Biggest problem with EVs is dealer markup, they're selling before they even hit the dealer lots. In Oregon EVs make up 40% of all the vehicles on the road that number keeps increasing rapidly. So much for the ridiculous claims the power gird can't handle all these new EVs, power grid is doing just fine ... well maybe not in Texax ;)

No dealer will even take orders, nor will the factory accept them. There are no 2022's to even test drive. The few that are incoming were built months ago before the stop build was enacted. Obviously they were waiting on the new retrofit batteries. There are some EUV's most are spoken for, the dealers always try to talk me into, but I love the smaller EV. Thanks for the review. I originally thought that low was the most efficient charging platform but after owning Bolts for almost 6 years I found that it is unless you're doing varied miles town and highway gives better mileage in "D" mode. This is likely because coasting with lower drag at higher speeds is more efficient the the higher drag from "L" mode. Basically you lose efficiency when it slows fast and then you accelerate back to original speed. Love this car, highly underrated.

Changing speed is terrible for efficiency in any vehicle. Regen braking is better than nothing but you will still lose about half of the energy. The real important thing is avoiding the friction brake. If you don't need the friction brake, you'll probably do better in regular mode than one pedal mode.
@mosfet500
@mosfet500 Жыл бұрын
@@fluffysheap It's probably closer to 85 or 90%, the new transistors are pretty efficient. I do use regen because it's makes driving easier, especially in traffic or long hills, but when I need ultimate range I turn it off. Try it both ways for a couple of full recharges and you'll see I'm right. Also, what I've found after several years driving in salted winter road country is that not using your brakes once or twice every 20 or 30 miles ruins your rotors by about the time you reach 20k miles, that's after two leases. An interesting note is that GM now uses the brakes with cruse control after the regen reaches around the 11 kW level. I'm wondering if that's to save the brakes?

I went to Novato CA Chevy dealer and they said that they were unaware of any $26K pricing but could get me a Bolt for $34. I suggested that they keep up on current events and faded them a copy of the Detroit Free Press article about the price cut. They then admitted that the 26K price is restricted to 2023 and later models. Then I asked them why on earth would I buy a 2022 Bolt for $34k at this time when I could get an arson-free 2023 Bolt in 5 months. They responded with crickets. Good luck Chevy. If I need to wait 6 months, I'll just pony up for Model 3.

That all sounds great--but there are some pressing questions about the Bolt that you didn't answer. What about the catching fire issue? Did they get it figured out? Is there any chance the 2023 has the same problem? Have they been able to fix the issue with the 2022 and previous models? Other questions I have are, what about the charging networks? Which ones work with the Bolt? And how extensive are these networks? I understand that Tesla will make theirs available, but have they got an exact date, and will they charge a premium price for non-Tesla owners? And lastly, how in the world do you get your hands on one to test drive it? Are any dealerships actually selling them right now, or do you have to order online, sight unseen in most areas? Last I heard (it's been several months) Chevy wasn't selling Bolts at all. Not online, not in dealerships, at least in my state.
@atticus6572
@atticus6572 2 жыл бұрын
I'll try to help. Basically, the fire issue has been resolved for 2023 albeit at further production delays (I can't speak for the process 2022 and earlier owners had to go through for the recall); charging networks are usually plentiful but are dependent on your area, which should be easy enough to figure out on your own; charging stations are becoming more and more common, especially with soon-to-be Tesla compatibility, which will likely be as affordable and more efficient; test driving is effectively not an option for vehicles like this due to scarcity; and lastly, your best bet is to speak to as many dealerships as you can and inquire when the 2023 Bolt EV/EUV window opens for allocations.
@atticus6572
@atticus6572 2 жыл бұрын
I do not live in the United States, but for me, I had a better time speaking to dealerships outside of metropolitan areas where demand is at its highest. A busy dealership quoted me at a 2-4 year wait for both Bolts, but a countryside dealership quoted me for 6-12+ months for a Bolt EUV and less than 6 months for a Bolt EV. I took the 2023 allocation with the countryside one.

I really want one of these. I only have one main concern. I live in an apartment building, so I don't have access to charging at home. Luckily, there are lots of public chargers near my work. Many public parking garages in the city have level 2 chargers which are easily accessible to anyone with a potential EV needing a charge and at 7.2kw/hour one will get a relatively decent amount of charge 4.5 hours to charge ones Bolt EV battery halfway 32.5 kilowatts energy transferred over for about 28 cents per kilowatt or about 28 miles added EV range per hour of charging which is very decent amount of charge rate.
@JohnDoe-mx1sq
@JohnDoe-mx1sq 2 жыл бұрын
Does your apartment have covered parking areas with lights? Many of those have a 110V outlet. Level 1 can add 4mi of range per hour. Also, consider your commute. If you're doing 100+mi per day you'll really need to plan around the chargers. 50mi or less per day and you'll easily have 2-3 days before you even have to think about changing like a gas car. As mentioned above, plug into a 7kW public charger and you'll be at 100% again while you work. Your work may let you plug into a 110V outlet too. A lot of places either don't care or welcome it. Finally I saw someone above that found a free level2 a mile away from their house.

I want to know how comfortable it is to sleep in.. either if the seats are comfortable enough to recline to get in a little cat nap. Or if the back seats fold down and if one can sleep in it that way well.. I guess I'm under the impression it takes a half an hour for every 100 miles of range, so if on high speed areas (80mph) I can go roughly two and a half hours to then have to charge for an hour it sounds like it would be worth it... (Factoring in that EV slow down their charge rate at around 80% of full charge 80% of 259 is 207.2) I'm also curious of how much people are speculating this car is going to be in 3 years and how much the battery range degrades in that time .. (The longest drive I 426 miles... So pretty much it would just take one electric charge stop, and I could see doing that drive a lot.. as hopefully electricity comes down as price as we expand renewable energy)

If doing long distance travel on highways one can typically recharge using electrify america at the typical expected 50 kilowatt recharge rate per hour so long as it is under the 65 kilowatt battery is less than halfway charged: now 50 kilowatts of charge will give one about 200 miles of additional EV range typically.

@@geophat75 One has to place a 2023 Chevy Bolt EV factory build order when it is ready to start doing that in late 2022 around late September 2022 hopefully at one's local Chevy dealership; just bring one's factory build configuration build sheet and simply have the local Chevy dealership enter it on their dealership computer based factory build order system and make sure to get a printout of the six-digit factory build order confirmation number; then about a week later contact chevy customer support and confirm that the build order confirmation number is actually in the Chevy factory computer database. Chevy earns ZEV credits every time they sell a BEV like the Chevy Bolt EV vehicle; so every manufacturer is competing to earn as many ZEV credits in order to subsidize building much more profitable trucks and/or SUV's; Chevy will likely be able to earn much more ZEV credits than just about any other manufacturers

With lithium batteries, they degrade some by age, some my charge cycling, but mostly on how they're stored. Batteries that are fully charged or nearly empty will degrade faster than batteries that are in the 30-70% charge range. This is true for cell phones, laptops, and cars that use lithium batteries. There should be a charging mode that keeps it in this range and would be the best to use if you intended to keep the car stored for most of the year.
@stevendeckert6373
@stevendeckert6373 2 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of factors to degradation but it's time-related more than anything. Our 2012 Leaf is at 69 percent state of health now. Prolonged heat or cold will also accelerate degradation as will charging the battery to 100% and leaving it for a while. Or lots of rapid charging.
