The 2023 Honda Africa Twin has been a very popular adventure bike over the last few years. Having been around for a while now, I want to find out if it is still relevant and as good as the competition in the adventure bike segment.
With many updates over the years, is the Honda Africa Twin still the go to adventure bike for far flung trips, or has the competition from other manufacturers over taken the Africa Twin?

It is a boring bike around town but when your on the back roads it is an absolute animal if you spend enough time to learn how to ride it. Best bike I have ridden and step off it every time with a massive grin on my face

I like the sound of these 270 degree twins. I was listening to a video of the NC750 Honda with various aftermarket exhausts and at low to medium revs they sound very nice.

As you said, it is very important to match your choice of bike with your intended use. I see many people buy large touring bikes when they ride local B roads and others who buy smaller single cylinder bikes then complain they are "no good" for super highways.

To be fair, it'll do gravel, rock, shale, ford streams & small rivers, mud, you name it. Gotta be a little more careful as it's pretty heavy, but it does handle off road quite well. Source: did the Honda Adventure Experience at the end of March, had an absolute blast.

Exactly, all bikes have their own purpose. It really is important to buy what suits your riding style and wants. For comfort and off roading this is a great ride 👍

I just bought a 2023 twin adventure sports with the electronic suspension and find the suspension excellent. You can set it firmer for the highway and twisties and there is zero wallowing as you describe. Or you can soften it up a bit for poorer roads and it handles them with ease. Your comments in the video make me wonder if you played around with the manual suspension setting at all? Regardless I am really liking the new bike and the ease of adjusting the suspension to find a likeable setting is worth the cost. Coming from a Yamaha XSR 700 I am totally shocked that the AT handles the highway and cornering better than the xsr. I was expecting it to not turn in on the corners as the xsr but it is better.

I am sure the new electronic suspension helps a fair bit. No I did not fiddle around with the suspension much on my 2016 model, was new to riding and didn't want to mess it up! Not saying it is a bad handling bike, but it is definitely on the softer side of riding. I also found it a little top heavy.

I have a similar story. I had a 2017 and sold it after a short time. The suspension was soft and the brake dive pretty bad. Since then I've been through several bikes and finally figured out that I missed the AT and so I ended up buying a 2020 base model. The improvements with the 2020 are significant. The motor is a little more powerful but I find the biggest difference is the suspension on the 2020 is much stiffer and better on the road than the 2017. It still feels and sounds like a big dirt bike but I have a lot of fun riding it around the busy metropolitan area where I live.

I have a 2017 DCT and echo your suspension experience, especially as a bigger guy.. I did install a cogent dynamics rear spring and have their front springs ready for install hoping the nose dive will be mitigated. Other than that no complaints. I love the DCT but miss the interaction of clutch etc. If I buy another bigger adv bike it will probably be a manual AT.

You sold the 1000 because of the suspension. Which is upgradeble, i did that for 700 euro, its a completely different bike. Its a shame people ditch such a good bike because of something so simple.

It's still relevant, alright. Look at the angle at 1:00. Stunning. My favourite one of the lot. And I like the basic L model the best. I had the original AT 750 for four years, the RD04. I bought it in Tokyo when I lived there and shipped it back to England. Three trips to the Algarve followed. 100 per cent reliable, as you'd expect. The wet weight of the CRF1100L is 238 kg. It does look a bit top-heavy, though.

I bought the AT 1100l in 2020 and it's been my everything bike ever since, got 47000 british miles on it and still runs like new. Only issue i had was the exhaust valve getting rusty and being stuck which was solved by replacing it with aftermarket can and a slight oil leak in the front near some connector but other than that, no problem, doesn't eat oil, starts in a split of a second every single time, goos fuel economy, rides like a sport bike when you want it to, it's trully a fantastic bike for me.

I have a 2022 Africa Twin (non-Adventure Sport), have done close to 4000 Km on it so far - it's been amazing so far. As far as "everything bikes" go (which is why I got it) it's up there. Handles the highway beautifully, curvy hills just as well (check out my last short) and offroad it's obviously a beast. The handling is surprisingly good for a big bike. The engine is amazing (and sounds amazing), the torque is great, on long rides itns comfy (although I'll probably get a softer more padded seat). One thing that has been annoying is the infotainment (Apple Car Play/Android Auto), which glitches sometimes (volume adjustment, disconnects unexpectedly for no reason etc.). I hope a software update fixes these things.

They are great bikes there is no denying that. Must admit I am looking forward to riding the new updated 2024 model, with it's 19" front wheel. I think it will help a lot with road connection and front end feel. Cheers

From my own experience, this review is spot on. I owned a 2017 model, which was good in almost every respect... but for some reason, which i couldn't put my finger on, I could never really warm to it, and ended up changing it after 12 months. There was also (unusually for Honda) a few build quality/finish with the early ones, caused by Honda cost cutting by sourcing certain parts from China (for example, the spokes corroding badly within a few months of ownership). I understand Honda have resolved these issues with the newer models, but I've never been tempted back to one, because ultimately you have to love a bike as well as it ticking all the boxes for what you need.

Yes it is a great bike but it just didn't quite hit the spot for me. I am sure some people fall in love with it, I love certain parts about the bike, but the whole package is just not quite right. Just personal opinion though!

Great video. Im in the process of selling my GSA. Had too many nigles for my liking, especially with the ESA. Fixed under warranty but took over 7 weeks to sort. Im wanting a work horse, but still something i can have a little blast on. I've narrowed the replacement donw to 1090 Adventure Honda Africa Twin 1100(base).

If they can't get production back up I'm getting a Norden 901. The AT wait lists are 6-12 months out. No 2023 announced for USA market. They announced they were coming to India in 2020 and we're struggling with availability back then. It has seemed to only get worse since then.

It's an absolute blast on the road and the low slung fuel tanks make it just as easy to pick up as my CRF300L Rally. Can cruise at triple digits if I want to. Gets 55-60mpg so fuel range is spectacular as well.

I got rid of my flawless 2017 AT DCT with some regret. Totally trouble free. Now I’m anxious to get a 2024 Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT with the meatier 19” front wheel biased a bit more for street use. If reliability is #1 on your wish list, it’s spelled HONDA!

Thanks 👍 Depends on your flavour of bike. The AT has great character and torque from the twin, however the 900GT revs out nicer and feels more agile to ride. I personally prefer the Triumph 900 GT

I've put 30k miles on ATs between a 21 &22 . They are a awesome motorcycles. When you get used to the DCT and how well it works I'd have a hard time buying a bike without it. And its a Honda. Best dealer network in the USA.

Well I have been into my local Honda dealer many times with the intention of getting a ride on one of these and the sales guys can't even be bothered to say hello and ask if I need any help, so it has been their loss. I have sat on one though, a friends 2021 bike, and it was so tall. I couldn't even get one foot down! I'm 5'7"- 5'8" with a 29" inside leg. The engine sounds great but I dunno it just seems lacklustre. I have had a ride on a KTM 1290 SuperAdventure couple of years ago and loved that. Lots of power and character, much more a rider's bike. I would say that possibly the KTM 890 Adventure R would be a better riders bike than the Africa Twin. They have murdered the looks of it this year as up until last year the looks were one of it's strong points. I think the new Transalp when that arrives in showrooms will be worth a look. Not so big and heavy and same engine as in the new Hornet.

Yup it is strangely tall! I agree, the KTM's are much more of a riders bike and more involving to ride. Think the main benefit of the AT is the comfort factor. Yes I think the new Transalp will actually be the better bike of the two, looking forward to testing it out 👍

10:50 - thing is though, a lot of folks want a jack of all trades, a swiss army knife of a bike, a bike that can do everything, and the AT comes close. With the DCT you have quite a good track bike - watch Guy Martin on one (there'd video on here). Chap I was talking with at the Honda Adventure Experience said when Guy rode the AT he had no idea about its sport modes or anything, and he was riding it in D, the luggy fuel-saving mode, *and still was able to get away from a relative noob on a Hayabusa*!

@@redangrevival true, he'll get the best track performance out of anything, but if it hasn't the ability to accelerate or brake, or hold the road, the performance envelope of the bike will constrain what he's able to get from it. One thing DCT does superbly well is gear shifts. Drag race the (heavier) DCT AT against the manual version, the DCT wins.

One of the bad things about the AT, which you experienced but didn't note, the wind noise! The wind on the AT is *so loud* it made my ears ring even with earplugs in! I got a quieter helmet, not enough. I tried different plugs, not enough and still annoying. Air dam atop the tank was ugly and insufficient. A Madstad windshield *completely* fixed the problem and only long highway rides even require ear plugs.

Depends on what your riding needs are.. I have the 2022 AT and love it but the KTM 890 Adventure R is rubbing on me due to the more extreme off-roadness of it. You can do the same with the AT given you set it up for it.

I used to have 21 AT and now i have a 23 Norden, so basically an 890 adv, and BOY is it much more agile and fun to ride. The AT is obviously very capable and reliable but the fun-factor on the 890/901 is so much better. The AT was a better highway bike with taller gearing, but the 890/901 smash it in handling and offroad. If I was doing longer touring id take the AT due to much smoother highway performance.

Some of the guys that have Rebel 1100 with that same engine have had problems with oil leaks around the stator cover. Have you had that issue on your bike?

Sounds like a less serious problem. Unless its a ford 2.7L ecoboost because i saw a cover in that that was so migrane inducing i couldnt imagine how much id hate myself if i bought the truck and it started leaking and i thought "hurr durr 4 cylinder going to be easier for monke brain like to work on like 90s toyota corolla honda civic" but thats not how it seems to be

Almost has universal praise as far as the mechanical design and riding experience is concerned. I fear what holds it back is the ownership experience. It’s very expensive to keep maintained, parts are difficult to obtain and a lot of the service work is proprietary so you need a specialist dealer to get it done. We only got 1 life to live man can we not automate the valve adjustment somehow someway so I can think about my relationship with christ more than i have plan when to adjust the valve across a fleet a cheap bikes i couldnt resist buying

I was tempted by the Africa Twin before I decided to go with the KTM. These are really good looking bikes especially with all the bells and whistles fitted as you mentioned. I have a 2020 ATAS DCTes now with 21000kms from new. Dirt bikes all my life of 56 years. Have mountain skeds, ATV/UTV, Z06 and Boss 302, Duramax Blah, blah blah. I be seen many transmissions, and suspensions, and love DCT! It's got so many benefits, for city, hiway, and off-road. You get the best of both worlds! The electronic suspension is the bomb! Panniers or pillion on or off, off-road soft or highway stiff, is adjusted in seconds and very compliant! We camp of our across western Canada, off and on road for weeks, and found them reliable, and comfortable for long day tours.

@@billmcmeekin7909 I’m 54 and currently on a KTM 1290 SAS which also has a semi-active suspension that works really well. I ride it mostly in automatic mode, the bike then feels the same for me with a pillion or without, loaded or unloaded. Because the tires on the KTM are done and I couldn’t get immediate replacement I took my old Suzuki DR800 for the commute the last two weeks and it was immediately obvious how much better the suspension on the KTM is. Motorcycles have come a long way and we are truly blessed with the quality of these machines and the huge amount of choices we have today.

this disconection with the road is the only thing that make me conserned for this awesome bike.and thats why i m thinking the vstrom 1050 with 19'' frond wheel.also, although i m not too short,i have the same height as you,i found this bike way too high and big.i dont know. ..i love the looks of this bike.but i think i ll have the same problems as you.i m closer to vstrom 1050,i just havent ride it.actually both.just have sat on them.which you would say is a sportier bike,more agile?but to be able cross dirt roads.and not over this in price.thanks

I actually prefer this base model over the adventure sport! It's so flickable and fun! Adventure sport is still a great machine, but for me, just not as much fun in the twisty roads! My only worry is the tubed tyres! Can anyone put my mind at ease concerning fast blowouts!?

@@redangrevival I've been researching tubed tyres! Not what they were 30 years ago! The modern tube helps prevent a puncture, tyres are stronger and yes more expensive! The problem of yesteryear was we would reuse an old tube! As the tyre wears it expands, along with the tube. Then put old tube in new tyre, tube will crease and more heat is created! This in turn can cause a blow out! It's now law the tube is changed with every tyre, or 6mths! So I'm a little more confident getting the base model! Also rally pro make tubeless spoked wheels, a set is just over 2 grand thou! Plus, I can't see a manufacturer putting something deadly on a bike as they could be liable for many deaths! So....I'm going with my heart and getting the fun agile base model with dct, in red, with a decent slip on for a Bit of noise! Thousands less than the adventure sport!

Maybe I've been lucky but I've been riding primarily off road dirt and dual sport bikes with tubes for 40 years and the worst I've had was a slow leak. The key is to use HD tubes over the basic tubes. I am just looking into my first adventure bike forv50/50 and I am leary of Tubeless ha ha. Here in Canada I only run 10 ply E tires in my trucks because too many Flats with 6 ply C tires. So if I buy an adventure bike with tubeless and it's time for tires, I will be searching for HD ply for peace of mind and of course carrying plugs and sealant.

Haha Morocco. That's funny. I brought a sprinter and in 4 years gone camping 4 or 5 times. Back to the piont. Honda is still the best but what's going on with them? This bikes great. Sound is better than a ducati without aftermarkert pipes.

To me, the proper question to ask, is, is it relevant given the new Transalp??? The Transalp is lighter, less top heavy, and has a more sporty engine.

Maybe it's not. Good chance they have made the transalp to good and it will mean the end for the AT. I feel bmw always held the 800 back so it wouldn't impact 1200 sales.

@@chrishart8548 But the BMW 850 GS is a twin, the 1200 a boxer. Two different kettle of fish. Both the Transalp and the Africa Twin are parallels, the Transalp having a more sportier engine from the Hornet. The AF is more off road orientated, but top heavy. For most adventure bikers, soft off road adventures, the more fun street Transalp should be more adequate. That is how it seems to me, and the Transalp is considerably cheaper, too.

@@davidmallia628 I have an 800 and many have stepped up to the 1200 it is a logical choice. Led headlights tft dash are a few of the reasons and less vibration. I wonder if the 850 was made deliberately heavy with a small fuel tank and non adjustable forks as standard. And a Chinese engine that seems to have upset a lot of people. I'm not bothered about a twin vs a boxer.

@@chrishart8548 the boxer is unique in lowering the centre of gravity, making it feel much lighter than it actually is. Easier to pick up when fallen, also, since it never falls flat due to the pistons. The 800 is meant to be more off road, and the Chinese engine has proven to be premium.

Funny you ask the question “is the Africa Twin still any good?” When you began the video saying you didn’t get along with the older model. It’s incoherent. BTW the Honda quoted weight of 226KG is wet weight in base spec trim (as tested). It’s important when doing a review to be accurate with specs. I wanted to be constructive in my feedback and am sorry to say I failed. This review feels more contrived than natural. I think this video isn’t representative of the quality you are capable of. I look forward to seeing what you can produce next time as I am certain you can do great videos. Cheers.

I think you bought the wrong version of AT. Based on your complains over suspension you should buy version with electronic suspension. This version is very much planted on the road, you can corner it to the footpegs and bike is very stable. When you put in the Off-Road mode it's totally different bike, still very capable. I have a 2018 base DCT model. Yes, it is very top-heavy. It's much harder to walk and move around than a Gold Wing which is 300 pounds heavier! The 2020 models brought more power along with a revised chassis and suspension geometry. I considered upgrading to a new one, but Honda has stiffed the US, and we are not getting ANY 2023 Africa Twins. I do love the engine sound and it's been very reliable, but if I stayed with the AT, I would really prefer the AS model with the larger gas tank, tubeless wheels and electronic suspension. Ultimately, since I don't do a lot of off-roading having that big 21" front wheel is kind of unnecessary. It really is one of the better looking adv bikes out there, but lately I've been looking at other bikes that might fit my needs better.

Hi, I agree it is a great bike and I did enjoy owning mine. However as you say, if you are not off roading then there are better bikes out there for road use. The engine on the AT is fantastic and sounds great, but the 21" wheel does let it down on road.

For me Honda Screwed up Pushing the DCT trans BS. Idk how good it is. shift the gears. Outside of that Honda Should have Made it Cheaper and Smaller! 800cc maybe This bike is Too Big and Heavy to be Legitimate offroad Tiger 900. T700, KTM 701. I would take over this bike if hour doibg any offroad

They're overpriced (in Australia). $24700 AUD for the base and $28000 AUD for the non dct sport version (at that price, you may as well just go for as 1250GS etc). At that price, it's the heaviest and least powerful (power to weight) of all it's competitors. It does look cool though.

I bought an ATAS DCT ES to replace my 2014 GSA. Big boots to fill but after 9 months, frankly it didn’t. The DCT was clunky and unresponsive in traffic needing manual intervention to change down plus irritating sport modes. It vibrates through the bars despite rubber mounts. I found the steering vague and brakes not a patch on the GSA. The ES was a huge disappointment being very soft to hard but not reactive to smaller bumps. The footrests are too far forward making standing unpleasant with the bars too close. All in all a pretty bike that disappointed. My 890 Adventure proves that less is so much more. And fun!

I get exactly where you are coming from! I just didn't gel with my 2016 model, I really like the bike and think it is top quality, but something just didn't do it for me. I would also have the 890 over the AT 👍
