@@carllos25 the point isn't about power and speed. It's about responsiveness which can be downright dangerous when trying to make a turn and not cut someone off or merging on the highway. I don't want massive power from my car, but I want instant response from the engine when I press the gas pedal. The lag in the response gives me no power up front and then too much power up top, it's like a rubberband effect which then necessitates me to brake to slow down. The problem with CVT is not that it doesn't have unlimited ratios. It does. However, the lowest ratio is pretty high due to being able to handle certain amount of torque so they had to make the pulleys bigger to have enough surface area to handle the torque. Due to size limitations, the lowest ratio is like a normal automatic in 2nd gear so the initial acceleration is pretty slow.
@iridium130m2 жыл бұрын
CVT has infinite ratios, but not infinite range of ratios, they can actually be pretty limited in range to protect the weak steel belt that is utilized. So still geared with efficiency in mind. And imagine this with 4 people, all their stuff on a 90+F degree day with all the turbo lag.
@jeffer11012 жыл бұрын
That AND you need to keep in mind the power of the engine. Even if there was a very tall ratio available to simulate "lower gears", HP is simply a measure of an amount of work over a period of time. This is why a more powerful engine is "faster". Also, the Toyota hybrid systems don't use a belt, they use a planetary gear set, so that is also another reason why their system is much better than any belt system (which every other CVT system uses).

Add that to the fact that honda's 1.5t doesn't have what I like to call "immediate power". Basically, off idle, it is completely gutless. You have to rev it out to 3-4k to begin to get power. Couple that with a (relatively) heavy vehicle, and you end up with the "floor it delay" they found.
@miker64722 жыл бұрын
Correct. I think the issue is that Honda tuned the throttle and trans to fuel economy at the expense of everything else. The CVT should have grabbed the lowest ratio possible much faster than a normal geared transmission in their full throttle scenario but it didn’t. To me that says Honda programmed in delay for normal people and even with a “sport” transmission mode didn’t give people a way to ask for more immediate acceleration. I think Honda is playing more games than they need to in order to hit FE targets, should’ve made the hybrid more accessible and called it a day.
@jeffer11012 жыл бұрын
@@miker6472 Possible, but it's still a large vehicle for a small 1.5L engine to move around. Not a big deal for casual driving, but if you are going to put your foot into, it's not going to be that fast. I think it has more to do with that than anything about the CVT's programming.

I rented a Versa with a CVT once. It did the same thing: It would bog the engine when flooring it to merge. And inexplicably, other times when I was just cruising around (maybe 30 mph), it would be at like 4,500 RPM for no reason. However, though I might question the shift logic, it got insanely good fuel economy with those antics.

Still living with the 2018 and we have gone on several road trips through mountain passes. It's fine for what it is - a big car that's easy on gas so it would be slow. It took the family with baby stuff, and the trunk being filled to the top, and still managed ~ 7 litres/100km. It could use more sound proofing but that would mean extra weight and even slower + worse fuel economy I guess. You live in Canada and you didn't mention carrying your kids to and from hockey practice!?! Regarding the CVT I'd love to see some investigation done with a throttle controller to see if it's torque-lock up programming or a really damped throttle response to save fuel and avoid overheating the CR-V in city traffic.

I have to give Honda credit as they are the only brand to have the audacity to cheapen essential items on their best sellers and charge exponentially more for a slower, less reliable car 👏👏👏

Essential items are frame, engine, transmission, wheels, and safety. Which did they cheap out on? People don't buy crvs to go fast. Hondas reliability is still one of if not the best brand of car.

I got the HRV to save some money. Compared to the 2020 CRV the 2023 drive is WAAAAAY better. I loved my 2020 CRV but 2023 HRV is an upgrade

Apparently the model as tested is just under 46K CDN. No Pano,no 360 cam, no HUD, no vented seats, even the Civic has more options like a full digital HUD, and at this price there are zero excuses. I expect a Civic interior in their smaller "Budget" SUV the HRV but at this price this is not acceptable. I'll be recommending the Mazda still. I was hoping to return to Honda but the CVT with the lack of these options...forget it. The Hybrid cost is going to be insane. These used to be Pilot prices. Honda is in trouble this year. They can't get inventory, and maybe these lack of features are a result of issues getting chips? but I can walk over to Mazda, get a Turbo cx50 for similar Money or go get a hybrid Rav.

Everything about this suv is nearly perfect only thing honda screwed up is definitely the Powertrain, what hell it's same powertrain as 2022 civic touring,

I couldn't agree with you more. The old CR-V was such an eyesore. I never considered it while shopping because I don't think it's safe to drive around wearing a brown paper bag. The new one looks better but I still think that Honda's design language is the industry's worst.

I wonder how long it will take before I see one on bags and 3 piece wheels.

I'm assuming a manual transmission is not an option?

I really really hate the CVT - in any car. My grandma has a 2021 and it rides nice but there’s zero driving experience. Slow AF too, but I understand it’s not a sports car. I’m used to my BMWs lol. I’ll add hers is a Hybrid. You do get the electric torque off the line
