The 2023 Mazda CX-50 GT Turbo ($45,700 starting in Canada, $42,300 in the US) is a brand new crossover that aims to capture consumers who want a sophisticated yet rugged experience. Adorned with black plastic cladding to mirror its outdoorsy vibe, and with optional amenities such as ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, the CX-50 appears to capture that experience.
But how is it to drive? And how does the torquey, 256 hp, 2.5 L turbo four cylinder perform? This particular crossover may have a certain sports-car attribute that may or may not belong in a vehicle such as this… Watch to find out what Thomas and James think! We hope you enjoy the episode. Man mazda's steering never dissapoint, somehow mazda always has the best steering among most of its competitor, the first time I drove my uncle's CX 5 I immediatley shocked by the accuracy of the steering, like, a crossover's steering has no business being that heavy and relatively accurate

"if you're a car enthusiast, and you're like 'oh I don't get to have a sports car', this is the one to get" As someone over 50 who's dealt with arthritis since my late 30's, that statement nailed it for me. Do I want a 2024 Mustang GT with that sexy V8? Of course! Can I get into and out of it more than once a week without hating my life? Not likely. I've come to terms with the fact that I need something taller and easier to live with, but I still want something that I can enjoy driving too, so this might be the one to get.

Own a CX 50 Turbo Premium Plus for 8 months now. Love it! Coming from a long line of BMW, X3, being the most recent, this is the only vehicle that has been “satisfying,” to “drive” outside of the German brands. Before buying the CX50, I tested an RDX, a RAV4 Prime and a Lexus NX 350. My son has a Santa Fe…it’s ok. They all did not have that fun factor and were just plain boring. This has all the tech I need and more than I had in my X3. The CX50 is a drivers SUV! I do wish there was a Hybrid, PHEV version but the CX-70 is coming. Zoom, Zoom!

We absolutely love it and the steering is so exciting. Interior has a sharp, minimalistic feel and doesn't look cheap. It doesn't have tons of plastic everywhere which I like. The lack of touch screen (apart from Apple car play/Android auto) I thought would be an issue but I actually LOVE it. We did our research and test drove a lot of cars. I bought my cx50 premium turbo last Friday. I really love most everything about it! Very responsive in both handling and engine performance. Seats are firm but comfortable and very adjustable! it does take a bit getting used to the media/touch screen. In 1 week it is becoming more intuitive in using it. If you want a luxury riding small suv maybe skip this one BUT if you like driving, handling, quality, something different in all the right ways this is worth looking into! For reference I wanted a 2 door Jeep wrangler but that is so impractical with school age kids, so this was the next best answer for me.

I love driving my car - its not perfect but its fun on the road. I love the fact the screen is small and unobtrusive and not a distraction. Back to just driving... I had Subaru Outbacks, Toyota RAV4, and last had a Ford Explorer. I Left Subaru because of the huge touch screen which I felt was a distraction- Hated the Toyota - felt cheap and the V6 engine I had. was too powerful for the car... The Ford Explorer was nice but ... not fun, just driving a truck.and the driving position not great. The CX50 brings back my love of driving. Its a sports car feel in a smaller SUV needed where I live - gravel and dirt roads. And just in love with my Zircon sand color. Can you tell I have zero interest in self driving cars?lol

I got a CX-50 the week they launched in the US. It’s my favourite car by a long shot. Coming from a Model 3 in Australia - Mazdas quality, refinement and much better looks is so appreciated. Plus I reckon that Bose system is better than good. Crank that system up and it’s even and controlled at high volumes, no rattle, no distortion. Tech is what it needs to be at this stage - I’ve not been in a non-luxury car that does digital systems particularly well - id rather opt for function and reliability over flashy tech that doesn’t work all the time. Overall - brilliant car. However I do wish their lane centering was better and low speeds and available at above 40mph…

Gentlemen, greetings from Florida. Two weeks ago (November 28, 2022) I leased my fourth Mazda, a 2023 CX-50 Preferred Plus, Soul Red Crystal Metallic (my three previous Mazdas were also this color). This replaced my 2020 CX-5 FWD Touring ,which had previously replaced my 2018 CX-5 AWD Touring, which had replaced my 2016 Mazda3 hatchback Touring 2.0. All of these are non-turbo, yet I find that they have plenty of power for acceleration and passing. You just have to be willing to mash the accelerator, and also to remember to use the MiDrive mode select to Sport mode (like you had your test car in this video - the red highlights on the dash gives it away). As for comparing the CX-5 and CX-50, there are some differences, but I'm getting used to them. I don't find the change is suspension is bad, I do like the longer interior space, and I have no problem with headroom (I'm 5'11"). I also love the steering and handling in the CX-50. As for the seats, I did notice something. Before deciding to lease the CX-50 Preferred Plus, I took a test drive in the CX-50 Premium Plus. The seats are different between the two trims, with the Preferred Plus having a combination cloth/leather (half leatherette trimmed), while the Premium Plus has leather trimmed seats. I found that the seats in the Premium Plus were not as comfortable as in the Preferred Plus. There was just something wrong in how my rear end felt in the seats in the Premium Plus, which I don't find in my Preferred Plus.

I wonder, from a control standpoint, if having firmer steering like this makes it a better car during emergency situations. I've seen so many SUVs in emergency situations where the drive panics and/or over-corrects and it creates a really bad situation, many times resulting in rollover or cars going way out of control. I get it that it's hard to live with day to day, as I had the similar situation with my X3 M40i. But it seems to be better suited for SUV drivers from a control standpoint. It forces two hands on the wheel, even during highway driving.

The 2.5 turbo is faster than it has any right to be, the heavy steering is phenomenal, the mpg is alright, the transmission is incredible in comparison to a cvt or the old dry 7 speed dct from kia. The technology is slow but it works well, the bose sound system is incredible, thr double pane windows are really nice and make the interior super quiet, its honestly one of the best cars ive ever owned. LOL, I daily a 2019 CX-5, and the independent rear suspension and 40/20/40 rear seat (which I have actually used on occasion) is exactly the hill upon which I'm willing to die in defending my CX-5 against the CX-50 😁. Honestly, I do really like the CX-50, and had it been available when I bought my CX-5, I could have probably been swayed towards it. BUT, as a CX-5 owner, I don't really see it as enough of an upgrade to make it worthwhile to trade in my CX-5 for a CX-50. If Mazda releases a new compact/midsize CUV with an inline-6 and rear-drive layout, though, that would probably be enough to sway me to switch. I don't want it to be CX-9 sized, though. I'm content with a smaller 5-seater.

@@differencemaker242 Hi, not a chance. Mazda has dropped the V6. They make the hood long in their recent vehicles so that they can install a 4-2-1 exhaust header on the back of the engine to help scavenge hot exhaust gases, which allows them to run high compression ratios in the 2.0L and 2.5L without needing high octane fuel. They've stated that their upcoming drivetrain will be longitudinal I6 with rear-drive layout and a hybrid system. Obviously due to its longitudinal orientation, it won't fit in any of Mazda's current platforms, so look for a brand new vehicle platform in which it shall sit. 🙂
