I just realized that Max had it all calculated. Starting his domination from Miami meant he would beat Vettels 9 in a row in his homerace at Zandvoort. However, Imola happened, and now he will only "equal" the record in the Netherlands.

He will be 26 by the end of the season. These magical season don't come along often. Seb was a 4 time world champion at age of 26. It's hard to predict will happen.

Stella confirmed Piastri broke part of floor and thus lost heaps of rear downforce which in turn killed his tyres. Looked good on first stint 2 seconds ahead of Lando, 10 seconds ahead of Lewis

He also could have run the kerb due to having to follow Norris. They were quick to say that if Norris wasn’t ahead then he may have been caught by Perez and Hamilton…..but that exactly what happened to Oscar

I think everyone forgot that Max found a sweet spot for the car in Baku and since then he's been on a tear. Max even mentioned it in the post race at Baku.

Best formula 1 podcast on the net. You guys are always a part of my watch routine for each race. Weekend warmup on Thursday, Free practice 1 and 2 on Friday, practice 3 and quali on Saturday. The race and Funniest tweets on Sunday. The Race review Monday and 1-10 Tuesday. Definitely makes the off weeks feel shorter!

Part of Max's dominance is the fact that he will put in 69 out of 70 perfect laps. So not only does he have a great car but he just has the mental capacity and ability to deliver a lap after lap after lap. I would venture to say most drivers only are able to get 35 out of 70 perfect laps

For me it was when he went 53 laps in a row on one set of tires all within a 2/10s of each other. The absolutely wildest thing I've ever seen a driver do.

the mclaren upgrade was planned since winter by the way and thats why it took such a massive step and why it got things right. Apparently they found in january that the car concepts was horrible but the discovered it early enough that they could focus on the new concepts as a mid season upgrade.

I believe that Ferrari has 2 big problems 1- They’re based in Italy, whereas most of the teams are based in the UK. This makes it very difficult to poach other engineers, they’re restricted to whoever they can train up themselves. Whereas Red Bull, Mercedes, McLaren, etc can all swap engineers and pick & choose whoever’s best. 2- Ferrari is such a large institution in Italy that I feel like their engineers are almost too scared to cock up because they hold Ferrari in such a high regard, on almost like god tier status. I think we saw with Binotto that he was scared to criticise Ferrari or even address their problems because he was almost in awe of his own job. Even Leclerc loves Ferrari so much that he seems a bit scared to put his foot down and say something, like Sainz sometimes does I think Ferrari need to realise the last time they were successful was when their pit wall & garage was nationally diverse with Todt & Schumacher

I imagine this is recorded before the statement made by the Alfa Romeo team, where they said that there were some issue with the braking system, which cut the engine off on Zhou's car during the start of the race. I imagine he then panicked and went way too hot into turn 1. Reminds me of his TR last season in Baku: "Are you kidding me? Guys, we can't just keep having issues when we had a chance." Even more gutted as a Zhou's fan knowing that the bad start is not really his fault at all (obviously going into Danny's back was still his fault, but that's more of a follow up from the mechanical issue he had at the start).

About three quarters through the race I realized that they aren't even filming max because he is just driving around at the front like he is in a road car. He wins in such an anonymous way--it's very weird.

25:40 Wasn’t there an instance years ago. I can’t remember which race or year, but it was between LeClerc and Vettel where the same thing happened. Ferrari didn’t want to do the team orders, then they half heartedly tried to do a swap but because of the long delay it lead to compromising both drivers. You would think that would fix that by now. Edit: It was China 2019, just checked.

I get wanting close racing but as a Verstappen fan (and I think I speak for a lot of MV fans) we've waited a lot of years for him to get into this position so seeing him win by 30+ seconds is extremely satisfying and not at all boring. I understand how others feel, I've been there, and I always found a lot to look out for and enjoy while my driver had no shot at winning the title. So sorry, not sorry, I'll enjoy every second of this - and not saying it to annoy or gloat to anyone, it's just normal I think.

Good news is that the trophies was mostly broken with the base and the cap fell off. Easy to replace. I love the idea of Max, taking some Elmers glue and packing tape and just sticking it together

As an enginner i simply love that dominance is such a high level of performance specially with the team i like. The Merc domination was beautifully brutal their cars were like clock machines the could do 99 laps in row with the same time, the engine simply amazing. As a Max fan that gets even nicer, the pace he has and he could be starting in P14 as in Spa last year and u still think that driver and that car could win by 20s

@@joshn1678 lol. Didnt said the engine was divine. The power difference was brutal. And they were really reliable compared to others, apparently you were the one who didnt watch it. He only lost for his teammate, and if u look back the Malaysia and one year of the Austria i think were the only times their engines had serious problems. They were so fast that the only way Lewis find to win in Abu Dhabi was to hold Rosberg back so someone could pass him (just a case of really poor sport spirit)

I am a Max Verstappen fan and he definitely introduced me into the world of Formula 1, which I did know beforehand but was never excited for. So from 2020 I started watching it and absolutely love it. But also agree that more racing would be nice. I think you can actually hear on the radio whether Max enjoyed a race or not. He loves to race and really work for it. That's when he's the most excited and brings more excitement to the fans. New to your podcast and enjoying it a lot! :)

“Why is it close in qualifying but a larger gap in the race?” Well, it’s quite simple. Just two things: 1) RB19 needs more time to get some heat into their tyres - that’s the fundamental design flaw (harsh to say “flaw”) of that car 2) RB always set up their car for the race rather than qualifying (as Tommy highlighted). This has been quite plain to see since the start of last year when the Ferraris often used to get pole or front row starts compared to RB. And that decision pays off in the race. This is why “RB is not clear” in quali. It has literally nothing to do with how others are performing. As for the 7 wins in a row question and the response to it, I’d love to see Max and RB go unbeaten this season. It’s fun for RB and Max fans to watch and equally nerve-wracking to see if they achieve that or not. If an RB or Max fan is saying he is tired of Max winning or that the races are boring, instead of being bored, be mad at Ferrari and Mercedes for building crap cars and dropping the ball massively.

Maybe Perez's Q3 struggles are a bigger indicator of how hard it is to get heat into the RB's tires, but his in race recovery from how much better those tires in turn last compared to everyone else.

Call me crazy but Ricciardo’s recovery shows he’s still got decent race pace and will definitely be scoring points with decent regularity fairly soon. Would’ve been good to see how far he could’ve climbed if Zhou didn’t clean him up

During the Silverstone GP we had two British drivers on the podium. Looking at McLaren's current pace we could see two "Belgian" drivers on the podium in the Belgian GP. And no, I'm not Belgian myself, but as a fan of both Max and Lando I'm definitively hoping they will make this happen.

I've really been enjoying Verstappens dominance over everyone. I know I'm watching history write itself right infront of my eyes. It's insane to watch live every weekend week after week. I have such an appreciation for his perfection. He really has been putting himself up there with the greatest drivers of all time. I can understand how it's been driving some fans crazy tho. It drove me absolutely nuts for years having to watch Tom Brady win so many superbowls. Thankfully I am and Eagles fan and that was on of the superbowls that he lost!!!!! But now that he's retired I have an appreciation for what he did. But when he was doing it it drove me absolutely nuts!!!!

@@mamavswild Not really, because the only car who can compete with him is the other redbull and its driven by a donkey, Many other drivers could of gone on this run if they had bad teammates like max does, this will be the new strategy in the future whenever a team has a insane car they will pair their best driver with a donkey and let their best driver win the constructors by themselves while padding the individual stats

​@@godusopp2752not really though, he pushed multiple teammates out of the seat. Perez's weak qualifications shows again that Verstappen is just on another level. I genuinely think none could compete since Verstappen's preference for the car's behavior is so different. Although I do think Norris or Russel could get really close and in time match/overtake him. I just think the mental side is crushing for everyone.

Last year at monza I remember red bull didn't run the lowest downforce that they could. They were so fast that they set the car up for higher downforce/lower tyre deg. Same I feel this year.

As a Mclaren fan for 25 years. MCLAREN are not back until they start consistently winning races and challenging for championships. Just being Verstappens new podium buddies is does not cut it.

DR got caught up in the turn 1 disaster and had a 40 lap stint on the mediums, they just ran such different races and qualifying was very close. An entirely inconclusive weekend for the AT battle imo though everyone's acting like DR is locked for the RB seat already

iirc they had another upgrade ready to be fitted, but are waiting until after the summer break to gather info on the current upgrades

Mercedes NEVER had this domination. There was always internal or external WDC and WCC title battles, from 2014-2016 was The Silver War and 2017 & 2018 was the memorable and most entertaining/respectful battles with Ferrari and Seb Vettel, in 2020, there was the Covid-19 situation which brought us so many new tracks and races where the W11 was amazing, but there were tracks were other cars were better, like RedBull etc. In 2021 was the most intense and polarizing WDC and WCC battle in decades. NONE of the Mercedes years was true domination with such a lack of entertainment like Verstappen is having with RedBull now.

So even if we take what you say at face value (that Merc domination was as boring as this) you are basically saying "the racing was sh*t then when that other team is winning all the time, so it's great it's still sh*t with another team winning all the time

Remember when I said McLaren would be good here because they had a high down force car (which is how you get round Silverstone) and low and behold, they were good? Sure, SS requires power. But looking at trap data, McLaren has GREAT cornering speed now. Anywhere that benefits from this, they will be strong.

It's worth pointing out that Zhou was actually on the radio complaining about whatever the problem was (almost looked like his car just rebooted right at the start) as he ran into Daniel, so he was clearly not focusing entirely on what was in front of him.

The dominance thing about Hamilton is exactly as you say - when Lewis dominated we had Nico/Seb/Val still winning races whereas now it's literally just max - I was at Budapest and after 3 laps A LOT of people checked out because it was boring

Love it when Tommy comes out with his stats, love it when Matt is frustrated with Ferrari woes (btw I feel you bro, massive Ferrari fan)... Btw, following you guys since your previous venture, one of the first subscribers when you started P1, very happy for you guys! Keep it up! Btw, here's a crazy prediction for Spa, Ferrari finishes out of top 10. I hate it when I say it, but I feel RBR, AMR, MRCDS, McL, and even Williams shall be too powerful over the straights, so much that they keep the Ferraris behind. I'd rather Ferrari get this blow now, and be better for, rather than get it at Monza! They need to be better at Monza!

13:11 I wouldn't say that the results would've been the same. I don't think Piastri would've worked his tires so hard to get back with Norris. I think if they had held station and the team didn't enact that weird pit strategy, Piastri could've managed his tires better without the need to manage the pressure from behind, while working together to move up.

Oscar was told to manage the tires after his pitstop so he wasn't pushing him hard he just wasn't as fast in them and Lando would've passed him easily in the next lap

I think the race pace vs. qualifying pace is not just due to the tires, but they are setting up the car for the race and not for qualifying. They have made that statement after a number of qualifying sessions and races over the course of the season. They are prioritizing race pace over qualifying pace.

Also, I think some more gaming content during the summer break would be good, maybe so open lobbies to race with fans, play with some content creators and things like that, maybe even a little P1 league race/series (also there is sort of two summer breaks there’s another one about 4 races after we come back)

38:00 I understand why someone would be upset with a team dominating. but at the same time I also understand that RB and Max are on another level and there isnt much hope for any other team in the 2023 season. So lets just accept the facts and accept reality and jump behind max, support him and cheer him on, lets all accept life and stop hating on max. Lets see if the guy can win every race... and then next year act however you want. This season is over already, lets not hope for a random upset or mistake... lets root for a flawless and excellent performance. All the teams and drivers already know its over. the media and fans need to know too.

Matt says that he's Ferrari fan but he is Leclerc fan personally. Seb winning Singapore 2019 and Charles finishing second was great for Ferrari, if you are a fan of the team. P.S. There's nothing wrong with being a fan of a driver not a team. But he should be honest about it.

38:40 Matt gets sick of people saying .......... I get that Matt, but you have to realise that you saying in EVERY live podcast how boring the race is, is not nice to hear also. Quite frankly, that is getting boring. It also suggest that it's Max his fault his driving is excellent instead of calling other teams/drivers out for not doing enough with their cars. Yes I support Max, but I also cheer for other drivers. And behind Max there is plenty going on. I love that Max is so good this year and I hope he''ll smash some records because next year it could all be quite different.

Actually after looking at the lap time data, if Tsunoda 1st stop was normal, he would be ahead of Bottas, which means he would also be in front of Albon. But even then Tsunoda can still turn it around if he made an early 2nd stop, just like Ric (lap 29) and Albon (lap 31). If he pitted at the same lap as Ric, he would definitely undercut Albon, thus probably P11 finish. If he pitted just after Albon, he might secure P12. What the team did was making Tsunoda 2nd stint long thus ended up with Tsunoda basically being undercutted by everyone and when Tsunoda pit for the 2nd time he ended up emerged behind Sargeant and basically stuck there until Sargeant went DNF. FYI, Ric was also stuck behind Sargeant during his 1st and 2nd stint, basically can't pass the Williams. What I'm saying is track position was king in that track, especially if you don't really have enough pace advantage to the car around you. Of course it doesn't help if the car in front is a Williams, which was fast on the part where you can try to overtake. A lot of people didn't pay attention to this aspect and think that Ric doing a really great job when what actually happen is that he was doing a good job but somehow the first lap happening ended up making him look better because even after that he ended up managed to finish ahead of Tsunoda but then failed to analyze what made Tsunoda ended up that low, which is mostly the fault of the team giving him a long stop for the 1st and bad strategy for the 2nd stop on a track that is hard to overtake. I would still put Ric ahead of Tsunoda in this race, but if Ric ended up getting 7, I will give Tsunoda a 5 or 6 simply because Ric did end up finishing ahead + tiny bit better quali + 1st race this season.

Hi, Great podcast and guess / review. Have you considered making predictions and review of the teams. You try to take the state of the team into consideration so ... How does the team handle strategy, pitstops, upgrades ..

As long as each team has to design and make its own car the potential for one team, and one driver, to dominate will remain. It's simply part of the idea of teams as constructors.

The thing about the start of the race for Ferrari is that Martin Brundle said the same thing, that they should swap. But then by lap 3 when DRS was enabled, Charles had already broke away from the 1 seconds barrier. Maybe Carlos just cooked his tires and needed to back off and cool down, and wouldn’t have happened if they did swap. But it didn’t appear like his pace was way faster than Charles other than lap 1 and 2

The communication difference between Ferrari and the other teams feels like when the driver asks a question and the pit wall has investigate, the other teams just need time to find the relevant answer in their notes from planning beforehand, where Ferrari need to do the planing on the fly, leading to a slower reply.

Max's tyre stints if memory serves me well (2 "free" pit stops basically due to gap to nr 2, 1st time Perez, 2nd time Norris) M until lap 27, a bit longer than average, switch to H.. stop 2 -lap 51 or was it 52- (24 laps, average for H) switch to M. So, very cleverly done

Going out to 12 places for scoring points would be a good idea if we go to 22 cars on track. Points going 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. +4 for 1st, +3 for p2/3, top 6 is +2 per position, then 7-12 is +1 point for each position. gives 2 more spots for points, without compromising the value of top 3 and 1st. If you start at only a 1 point increment from p4-15, then it will reduce the value of podiuming by quite a bit. the average point value of 4-15th is 6.5 vs the average value of 4th-12th being 5.67. The Current average for 4th-10th is 6.15, with this new 12 point system is 6.8, and with your suggested 15 from a previous video it would become 9 points on average for 4th-10th. So, you would also need to add a good chunk of points to the top end to compensate for more points in more positions. I like how 12 will make the point standings a little bit closer increasing a 7th place average by 10% of the winners total, but 15 points going 25, 18, 15, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 will devalue podiums too much. It becomes a 50% increase in points gained compared to first place for averaging 7th place, and that doesn't seem fair.

Piastri literally said he had damage on Ig Zak said he had damage and Stella literally said Piastri had damage directly affecting tyre deg and they told Oscar on the radio he had damage but Oscar is one not to use excuses to the media

However, Andrea Stella confirmed that Piastri was carrying floor damage during the race as his pace fell off horribly in stints 2 and 3. "In the second stint, we saw that Lando had a bit more pace. But in fairness, we have to also mention that Oscar had damage on his car, and this meant that he lost a few tenths from a performance point of view. "But we also think that because this was rear downforce, this caused extra degradation on the tyres, and that's part of the reason why he struggled then to keep up with Lando but also with the cars coming behind him." Piastri failed to mention the damage post-race when talking to written media and TV outlets, although Stella confirmed they told him over the radio. The Italian believes this is part of Piastri's personality as he doesn't look for excuses. The McLaren team boss added the damage didn't just happen in the battle with Pérez. "Oscar is a guy that doesn't look for excuses, so not surprised that he might not even mention [the damage] but it's there. The damage happened actually running wide on a kerb, not necessarily and only when he went off-track while fighting with Perez. So there maybe both times where this damage to the car happened."

The lack of close racing this season compared to last year is because of Mercedes.... they wanted the ride height to be higher and after that the close racing almost stopped. Thanx Toto for that (what a moron when the problem was HIS cars and not the rules).

I am just looking forward to see how many races RB (or should I say Max) can win this season.... I am going to guess that they win all but one race and that will be due to a engine or gearbox fault on Max's car. There is just nothing that can stop them this season... and I love it.

About the domination - Max/RB feels the most dominant combo ever even though Merc had biggest gap to second team in the past, but while peak Lewis was arguably as good as Max is but he never had the consistency that Max has. Lewis from time to time had those off races, which almost never happens to Max. Also Merc never reached the operational excellence that RB is presenting (strategy, pitstops and so on) RB. Also about the laps led - it's hard to compare Schumacher to Max since refueling was still a thing back then and it worked much different strategy wise. Guys in front were usually starting light and pitting early not heaving enough time to build the gap to those that started with more fuel onboard since pitstops where taking much more time.

I often wonder if Ferrari's strategy team are evaluating too many options, which makes them indecisive? It seems like the other teams are a lot more decisive on their strategy decisions, that's for sure.

Everyone’s scared to put their hand up and make a call for fear they get it wrong and put their head on the chopping block. So they get caught not making a decision and the decision gets made for them once it becomes too late to do anything else. Just look at AT - Danny made the call to pit for meds as they weren’t going anywhere on the hards and the team ran with it and trusted him. Imagine the confidence that gives Dan going forward when it might matter whereas Carlos and Charles would just have no confidence in the support they receive - not good for results at all.

I think McLaren has cemented themselves as the 2nd best team on the grid, could've easily been a double podium two races in a row if it wasnt for an unlucky SC and Piastri getting floor damage mid race.

42:09 raising the ride height was the worst thing to have happened to this generation car. I blame Toto for whinging so much to have it raised that it not only screwed their car, it's made racing worse while having the opposite effect on Red Bull making their car better!
