Rugged adventure SUV's are exactly what buyers are looking for today. That same capability has been making its way onto the 3-row family SUV segment. The 2023 #KiaTellurideXPro and 2023 #HondaPilotTrailsport are two of the newest rugged options and while the #PilotTrailsport has been fully redesigned, the #TellurideXPro still represents one of the best in the segment, despite being on the market since 2020. For about $50,000 to spend, which one of these two family SUV's is the better buy?

The Kia Telluride has been the no-brainer choice for a 3-row family SUV for the past 3 years, however today we pit it against the redesigned Honda Pilot! For around $50,000 to spend, which one of these would you choose? Let us know below!

My aunt had a 2020 Telluride LX (Base) & in 3 years she put over 100k miles. Never had a issue. She has now upgraded to a 2024 Telluride SX prestige. I have a 2019 Kia Forte EX with 98k miles never had a issue. My Dad Has a 2021 Sorento SX prestige with 80k miles no problems & my mother upgraded to a new Sportage SX from a 2017 Sonata with 227k miles . We are a big Kia/Hyundai Family & never had problems with Kia &/or Hyundai. They have stepped up big time! Take care of your car and be precise with oil changes / maintenance & they will last forever!

Last forever....😂 I'm glad you had good luck within your family but Hyundai "KIA" power train qaulity is still a major issue. The spend more time in tech features then quality with engines and transmissions sadly. I want them to build 300k mile engine and transmission combo that the Pilot has always been and so far that's not the case to many major flaws in design. I have 235k miles on my 2005 Pilot still drives better then most new SUVs and power train is smooth. So KIA sells you bling instead reliability great for a lease but terrible for long term purchase sorry there moving to EV's so appears they will never hit Honda or Toyota Reliablity.

Six fixes for the refresh that Honda ought to do and it will be crushing it: a hybrid component in Honda's V6 engine for better fuel consumption, some better leather interior color options across all trims, a 12" entertainment screen, improved Honda sensing technology, improved sound deadening, and the option to have captain or bench seating in the 2nd row in all trims. Do this, Honda, and you'll be crushing this segment in sales.

@@averagejoe112 You act like it's a 2004 Infiniti or something. It's fine, there's nothing wrong with it. I bought a 2024 Pilot Trailsport last week. The only thing I don't love is that the backup camera is a fisheye lens instead of a standard lens, whereas my 2020 Accord had a nice 180 degree view that was more useful. The fisheye makes for a strange view, but the overhead view makes up for all of that, and comes in handy in all parking situations. Otherwise these are big, comfy, spacious SUV's, and mine did great on the sand at the beach the other day in sand mode.

It really depends what you want. These two options have a lot more space inside than an MDX and a GV80. The Telluride has more features while the Pilot will be more reliable and has better driving dynamics. Also if you need 8 seats, Pilot Elite all the way.

@@abdullah79195 that’s a great car but its $5k more and has a few less features. Also non touch screen with annoying touchpad, much higher maintenance costs, premium gas and higher insurance. Lots of other factors that make owning an MDX (or any luxury brand) more expensive than just the price you buy it for. The Pilot is much bigger inside and seats 8. That could be a big factor. Also to get the same features as the Pilot Elite, you’d need to go for the MDX Advanced which is $12k more. The Tech package is missing a bunch of features, that’s why it’s comparatively priced.

People will tout Honda's reliability when they have significantly slipped every year. Toyota, Lexus and Mazda are currently and have remained the most reliable Japanese brands. Honda is nowhere close to them. Oil dilution issues, engine problems, gearbox issues, you name it but people will blindly praise Honda for being Japanese. The previous gen Pilot had average or below average with many issues depending on model year. This new Pilot has a new engine so reliability is not something you can just determine. The Telluride has high customer satisfaction with decent reliability due to the V6 and 8 speed. It's an amazing car, and the class leader since 2019 for a reason. The new Pilot didn't do enough to catch up with the Telluride. The CX-90 has compromised on practicality and has an all new engine with a poor gearbox. The Grand Highlander is the only vehicle worth considering with the Telluride and Palisade, but still lacks some of the extra features and luxury, though it at least has a hybrid engine as a big pro. With rumors of a brand new Palisade and Telluride in 2025 with a hybrid engine option, I think the Koreans will further their lead in this segment. It is absolutely insane to think both those cars debuted in 2019 as a first effort, and took over the market by a storm, while being ahead of their time. 4 years later, and they're still sought after and holding their own against brand new competitors. Their reliability has also improved with their new engines. Hyundai and Kia are making amazing cars, and here's hoping their reliability holds up.

Very informative comparison. I own a 2023 Kia Telluride and in mixed city/highway driving, I get almost 22 mpg. Your 18 must be based on mostly city driving. There are some quirky things about the Kia e.g. the engine cutoff when stopped, which you can turn off, but it always resets to on when you restart the vehicle. There are third party devices you can install that remembers you last setting. The lane keeping on the Telluride is kind of jerky. The car will wander to one side, then make a semi-aggressive turn to get back to center. Braking using adaptive cruise control to maintain distance to a car ahead of you can also be somewhat aggressive. The EX models do not have the front obstacle sensors, which is odd. Only the rear sensors for backing up. There are some other mechanical differences between the two (the fuel injection technology on the Honda keeps the lifters clean and hydraulic lifters on the Pilot don't require shimming when resetting the lifter clearances like on the Kia). The Kia engine has a timing chain vs. a timing belt on the Honda.

I think you're maybe misunderstanding the 3rd row buttons and their uses. First you said the Honda didn't have one up top, which it does, then when you showed it a few minutes later, you called it "hidden". On both vehicles, the button on the bottom is for getting into the 3rd row, and the button up top is for letting yourself out of the third row. You're not meant to use it while getting in, therefore it doesn't need to be seen unless you're getting out of the 3rd row. This design has been around since Honda introduced it on the 2016 Pilot, and then Hyundai/Kia just stole the idea.

I'm researching the Grand Highlander but I'm not sold on a 4 cylinder engine for such a large suv. I don't care about turbos. I actually think they shorten the life of the engine. Trailer trucks are only 6 cylinders with humongous turbo. They tow tons. All the newer turbos are built for long term use. Turbos produce more torque for towing especially at lower RPM. Naturally Aspirated V6 have to whine out a lot in a higher RPM to hit the torque numbers to tow. So turbo engines work less to tow.

I don’t think anyone will ever get over the moon patrol former generations of the CR-V. This Pilot is definitely a step in the right direction as well, but that just brings it to a level of not being unattractive. It just needs more creative and modern design cues to excite potential buyers. The Telluride has never failed to be exciting, and only gets better every time they refresh. I'm a huge Honda fan (at least old Honda). I've had two S2000s...still have one...2 Fits, my brother has a Fit with 300K miles and no issues, and my dad had an NSX and Legend. They weren't impressing me much lately. A bit boring and really conservative. Still have the reliability though, right? Well, kind of, but it is slipping and a lot of the excitement disappeared with the addition of Turbos and drop in redline. My means have gotten to where i can get a bit more expensive cars so I have been driving Audi's for the last decade or so...I know, reliability right. Haha. Well we have two kids now and the Fit just wasn't cutting it for the wife. We looked at the 3 row family SUVs, including up at the Q7 and such. If you are not a brand snob and you understand that likely the underpinnings aren't as sophisticated as the Germans...but they work as intended...the Korean siblings are the no brainer. JD Power and Consumer Reports are hugely high on them for reliability. Owner satisfaction is sky high. The interior fights way above its weight class, technology and customization blows my 2022 SQ5 Prestige out of the water (other than wireless Carplay). It is hugely comfortable. Everything you touch feels really nice. We bought a 2023 SX Prestige Telluride and couldn't be happier. We have racked up 7,500 miles in 7 months on road trips and around town with the family in absolute comfort for $20K less than a similarly equipped Q7. We've got a longer warranty and more interior room. The V6 and transmission in the Telly has proven to be reliable over the last 3.5 years. It does not have the engine fire issues people always like to bring up. The only real issue it has is the *optional* hitch wiring harness which has a stop sale on it. Again, if you aren't a brand snob, there isn't a fault. It does everything and does it well. Underpinning complexity aren't that important if it works and in most cases, works better than the more complex ones of some other vehicles....and it is probably cheaper to fix because of that. I'd like the massaging seat of the Palisade. Dont really care about the power third or third heated. I wish we had the amber DRLs that are coming back. The gas mileage could be a bit better. It'd be nice if it was wireless Carplay. Don't ignore because it is 'just a Kia.' People that can afford more than cars in this class are buying it. I can promise you that. Previous Audi, BMW, Lexus, MB, and Porsche owners. People in the the 80's were saying the same thing..."I wouldnt be caught dead in a Honda." "It's just a honda." Times change.

In a vacuum the Telluride and Palisade are better options than the new Pilot. More features, a bit more luxurious interior and bigger infotainment screen. But we live in the real world where people buy these expensive cars to run for a long time. Reliability is a big factor and the Honda will just be more reliable. For me I’d pick the Pilot Elite. You get most of the features you’d get in a Telluride or Palisade, still 8 seats (not available on higher trim Telluride or Palisade), better driving dynamics, and better reliability. I didn’t find the 9 inch screen too small at all. Obviously I’d like bigger but it wasn’t a con for me. Also good luck getting a Telluride or Palisade and if you do, it’ll be marked up $5k-$10k. The Pilot Elite in my area was marked up $0-$1k in most areas and one place it was $3k. Other huge factors to consider versus just one is nicer inside than the other.

I've always given Kia/Hyundai/Genesis a fair shot when picking a new car. The thing that's always stood out to me, across every car they make, is the throttle response is absolutely awful. It doesn't feel connected to the engine at all; you get different engine responses given the exact same throttle input. Suspension is also extremely floaty, which gives laymen the impression that it's good, but all that floatiness comes with a major lack of control. Steering feel is also similar to the throttle, doesn't feel connected, seems to change every time I take a corner. This is something Honda excels at; the driver inputs are some of the best in the industry in terms of feel and responsiveness. If driving feel is anywhere on your list of importance, the Pilot is a no brainer here.
