Great comparison: Of note, the reason why you felt the V6 was so much better in the Pilot over the old one is because it is indeed a brand-new engine. It went from a SOHC to DOHC design and that could explain why you felt the engine much smoother/less gritty due to it being much more relaxed. The Honda 10AT is a marvel of a transmission, which helps the vehicle to be more engaging and more refined to drive.

This engine is a slug.... I drove it and it doesn't have nearly the real life feel of torque that you feel in the Telluride.... I floored both, and the Telluride will put you back in the seat.... the Honda speeds up slowly like a golf cart and has this weird 'whine' as the rpm's come back down..... very disconcerting.

@@mcnater Everyone has their own preference..... I can tell you this: I test drove the Honda Pilot and hated it, but I have also found some disconcerting things about the Telluride: Telluride has an OLD SCHOOL engine and transmission.... SERIOUSLY old school. Direct injection with NO PORT INJECTION to clean the valves of carbon buildup..... they also do NOT have hydraulic lifters, so you actually have to take the vehicle in to the shop to get the valves manually spaced/adjusted every so-many miles.... same type of thing I have to do to my lawn mower and my Generac generator. They also have plastic oil filter mounts..... terrible design....and a future point of oil leaks as the plastic degrades. I pulled the plug on my Telluride order..... this is NOT a long term engine/tranny setup.... and I am not going to be a guneia pig for Hyundai/ Loa again.... already have a Santa Fe Ultimate that is part of a class action lawsuit for the failure of 10's of thousands of bad 2.4 and 2.0 turbo engines.... just waiting for mine to implode.

@@BeverlyGill-l2x I frequent the F-150 forums and though direct injection carbon buildup was talked about a lot due to a few KZbinrs, nobody there has shown any actual problem caused by it. Ford sold millions of them before changing to a dual injector setup like my F-150, which has twice as many injectors that can fail. And injectors are kind of prone to failure, relatively speaking. Is that really a better solution? I'm not convinced. The valves, yeah, I was really surprised to hear that. I haven't had to adjust valves in decades.

I’m not surprised. Honda typically does really well with packaging and driver engagement. The seats are so low the only seat where my thighs touched the seat was in the power driver's seat. Even in the passenger seat my knees were in the air, and you have to go all the way up to the Elite to get height adjust in that seat. The other poster is right, despite what the specs say the Traverse feels significantly more spacious and comfortable because the seats are higher off the floor. Though even in the Traverse, there is no way I'd be reasonably comfortable in the 3rd row. It takes a minivan or full size SUV for that. Midsize third rows are for short people or short trips only, IMO.

Great review and agree with your assessment. I test drove a Telluride a couple of years ago. I've also watched just about every review out there on the Telluride. I've driven the previous gen Pilot but not the '23 model yet. For me, the main reasons the Kia is such a hot seller are 1) It's exterior looks (it does stand out and some folks think their driving a Range Rover alternative!). 2) Kia does tech well and people are drawn to all the standard bells and whistles especially on the higher trims. 3) Outstanding interior room, especially in the second row and the interior design is attractive particularly the dash with the latest generation. 4) Longer standard warranty than competition and value (although since 2019 when it launched the top trim SX-PRO has jumped from $46k to low 50k's). Reasons we decided not to buy the Telluride. 1) Front seats are big and roomy but not particularly comfortable, could do with more cushion support in my opinion. I had just test driven a '22 Honda Pilot before the Kia and the seats were noticeably more comfortable in comparison no question for us anyway. 2) Although Kia did a great job making everything look like a luxury interior inside once we started touching the dash trim and some hard surfaces on the doors and around the console the materials for us felt cheap and plasticky. 3) After test driving, we thought it drove more like a minivan than the premium SUV it was aspiring to be! Not particularly engaging to drive like our sport feeling Mazda CX-9 but fine like a minivan. Overall, we came away feeling like it just looks more upscale than it really is, inside and out, for us didn't find the front seats as comfy as we'd like, and the driving experience was fine but again not even close to the driving dynamics of our Mazda. The Honda has its pluses and minuses too for me. Have to test drive it yet. The transmission with the new 10 speed seems to be smoother this year, I think mechanically and dynamically it's a better overall vehicle than the Kia if that matters. I'm not a mechanic but most reviews I've watched and read so far are leaning that way. It's also a fair assumption from the reviews I've watched that the Pilot is the more engaging driving experience but not as nimble or sporty as the Mazda CX-9 for reference. I'd also assume the seats are more comfortable in the Honda, and any reviews I've watched were impressed with the seat comfort. I think the Telluride is the more appealing vehicle to look at inside and out although the new Pilot is definitely an improvement over the minivan-like previous gen. The pilot would be more appealing with the bigger touchscreen found in the new accord. Also, Kia offers a better range of interior colors and for their "off-road" SX-PRO X LINE you don't have to settle for just black leather like in the Pilot. Lastly, if I was to buy the new Pilot and wanted the Trailsport Pilot I wish they had offered it like the Telluride as an add-on package instead of a trim. You could get the Elite Trailport trim then like the SX-PRO X LINE both about 55k and include features like the Bose speaker system, ventilated front seats, full digital instrument cluster, HUD, other interior color options. All these are not standard or an option on the Trailport.

I had to test drive the new Kia XPro to see.

You nailed it. For me, I need an Elite Trailsport, which they don't offer. And a hybrid engine would really push me over to Honda. As things stand, I'm waiting on the Grand Highlander as it checks most of the boxes for me, minus the off-road chops.
@MIZUNOMP60
@MIZUNOMP60 Жыл бұрын
@@timgriffith2995 Thx. We're in the same boat. For us it's probably going to be the Pilot or new Grand Highlander. The Pilot's V6 with its smooth 10 speed is enticing. The Toyota's electrified 4 cylinder puts out big torque and HP numbers (2.4L Hybrid Max Engine) and looks like it will have the quickest acceleration of non-luxury 3-rows. Although the new CX-90 may be close too with its new in-line V6. I've watched some video reviews on Toyota's new Crown sedan with the Hybrid Max Engine and it looks impressive. Don't think it will sound as good as a V6 or in-line 6 and I've no idea how it's reliability will be. I think it will be late April or May before we see any on-line driving impressions from auto journalists. The Grand Highlander definitely looks better to my eye and offers more space and features than the current Highlander and it will be interesting to see how it drives in a couple of months.

@@kgindpls Appreciate that. For me, a couple of more interior color choices for the Trailsport trim along with front ventilated seats and the larger touchscreen from the new accord would be just about perfect at this price point. I could live without the HUD, premium sound system and full digital gauge cluster at 50k. But if they included all features from the Elite trim with more interior color choices for the Trailsport and offered it as an Elite Trailpsort trim I'd buy it at 55k (more of a direct competitor to Telluride SX-PRO X-LINE)

The Kia is for people who like nice things for looks primarily and don’t appreciate the day to day quality experience but rather the day to day perception of their car by others. Both are good but in different ways and for different people.

Kia interior competes with Mercedes and Audi and feels luxurious… Honda interior is a joke and seats are thin and Cardbordy with and outdated small display screen… Other than looks of the Honda. It’s not worth 50k at all… Everything beats it… I test drive a trail sport one recently and wasn’t impress at all with the interior.. Nice try though In fact Mazada, Kia, Hyundai are leading those categories having warranties that are longer that any other brands 10 years 100k Honda feels cheap and plastic everywhere. I just test drive one it was a joke Now if your talking about Kia and Hyundai 10 years ago I would understand By the way everyone forgets Toyota were not reliable when they first enter the US market You get 10 years and 100k on a Kia or Hyundai and not pay 90k -150k for luxury cars like Mercedes or Audi features (which are money pits). @@persaud101 I test drove pilot, grand highlander, palisade, mdx, q7 and a used x7. The palisade in mid trim was absolutely cheap rental car feeling with some nice screens. Palisade was trying to style like a bmw or other German car but felt hallow and cheap. German cars felt best for building quality followed by Acura and then Honda/Toyota. Hyundai had cheaper thinner body panels and interior parts. Easy to see where cost cutting went. The Hyundai has great design and improvements from 10 years ago but still inferior build quality. Reliability is ok on Hyundai and it’s a reasonably good car for a few years. Honda and Toyota has better durability and quality over Hyundai. Hyundai styles and designs well. Germans make high quality cars that require more expensive maintenance but are also decently durable if maintained well.

Honda really needs to offer a Hybrid Pilot. The fuel efficiency is not great for a 2023 model. It hasn't improved in 10 years. To meet future CAFE standards, it will have to hybridize the J35. Also they never tell you if the second row seats recline or not, or if they do they don’t show how much of a recline there getting, or whether the recline is more than the average automobile gets. I think it's obvious why he found the Telluride 2nd row more comfortable...the seats are higher. The first time I sat in the new Pilot I was surprised at how low they were. And you have to go all the way up to the Elite to get height adjustment on the passenger side. At 6'3" and with teenage kids, that was a dealbreaker for me. Low seats mean no thigh support which is torture on long drives. I suspect they did it to game the capacity numbers, since there's plenty of headroom to make them higher. If you get in a Traverse after the Pilot it is immediately apparent that the Traverse offers more useable passenger space and comfort, regardless of what the specs claim. That's why it's so important to go out and drive them yourself.
