Does it steer REALLY heavy at slow speeds? I test drove a 2023 the other day and man it felt horrible turning in a parking lot. I have a sequoia 5.7L and have owned a bunch of trucks. When I drive it - it felt like I struggled turning bc it was so hard to turn.

As a GX 460 owner I can tell you there is no better mid-size SUV on the market. Yes, the mpg is bad, yes it is dated, but the reliability and power in that 4.6L V8 is excellent. I'll pay a little more at the pump to know I'm not going to break down and have long-term reliability that doesn't cost me thousands of dollars out of know where.

The secret sauce of the GX is that its a 4 out of 5 in most categories. Towing? Not the best, but above average. Off-Road? Not the best, but above average. Ditto comfort. Ditto passenger and cargo space. It's big enough to do big car things, but it's way smaller and more nimble than it looks. The turning circle is unreal, the visibility out is better than most and its shockingly easy to drive in town. It's just just a damn fine all rounder. Fun tidbit of info on the center differential. The torque bias can go from 29:71 front to rear to 53:47 front to rear depending on road conditions and traction needs (nominal is 40:60 Front to rear as you said). So long as the front axle never needs more than 53% of the torque or the rear more than 71% then you have forward motion. If the surface demands torque outside of that range, lock the center and boom. 100:0. The front can can 100% or the rear can get 100% and anything in between.

Nice information I think you're from Australia because it is not common for americans to know this stuff. Anyway you've said the GX is above average off-road hmmmmmm let's talk about Toyota SUV's in usa after the land cruiser/LX the GX become the second best Toyota's off road vehicle due to the information that you've mentioned + it has V8 and kdss system In terms of towing I don't know what it can tow but it becomes third in towing after the land cruiser/LX and sequoia

@@johneldepresso think there might be some generalization here. No doubt the Prado has a great reputation and likely there are more still performing their duties than most other models or brands, but it’s not like others are incapable of lasting a similar length of time. The use and maintenance is just as important as what the vehicle is.

One thing to note about KDSS is it locks out above 11mph and the sway bars are always "engaged" regardless of conditions. This can make the ride a bit rougher when you're doing dirt trails and such as it reduces suspension travel. This is especially pronounced if you're using a stiffer and heavier tire like an all-terrain. Also, fun KDSS facts. It gives you an extra 1.5" (approximately) of travel both up and down (3" total) compared to a non-KDSS Prado equivalent. So it's a great way to get extra articulation from the factory with the added bonus of on road stability.
@ianjohnson4788

You can install a switch to disengage the KDSS at higher speeds. Best of both worlds!
@ronaldrrootiii6040
@ronaldrrootiii6040 Жыл бұрын
Funny about all this Land Rover came out with the same traction control system and the ace system to make the sway bar gets stiffer when entering corners and in low range super loose for crazy articulation totally Factory. You can watch the old Discovery 2 videos on the streets course doing a slalom with high-speed camera pointed directly at them also testing the Mercedes and the BMW and the Land Rover had the least lean because the ace system would stiffen it up before it started to lean what off-road crazy articulation from solid axles with Ace system letting the wheels go way up in the fenders and not to mention the traction control system that is ABS just like the a track on the Toyotas that still doesn't even work as good as an old Land Rover. If only Land Rover had made things as reliable as Toyota. I always get a kick out of watching so-called newer technology on stuff that was literally 23 years ago and still working on Rovers like mine once you work out some of the Kinks like a better cooling system and more accessible ignition coils but that's easy. The new Land Rovers are ridiculous they're very good off-road but I wouldn't trust one at all. I think the Grenadier is going to be awesome. They're really testing them here in America. In all reality the Jeep Rubicon Wrangler is the most capable front and rear lockers front and rear solid axles front and rear sway bar disconnects. But sometimes people want something that doesn't look like a Jeep LOL I feel the same way. Recently watched on tfl they tested this Lexus and a Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover traction control system worked way better on the spin test from every wheel put up on rollers. It's like the Toyota traction control system just doesn't grab hard enough right away the way even the old Landover kind of and it makes no sense cuz it's not technical as soon as it detects uneven will spend just grab the brake hard but Toyota doesn't they go gentle slowly ease into it and that sucks because it's bad enough you have any delay compared to a locker when getting stuck or not could mean the difference of that one or two seconds of momentum loss but at least make your traction control system more aggressive like Land Rover and it's not hard to do just grab the spinning wheel brake harder the first time

I've had mine for a year, 2022 version. It does not have the surround camera, has the dark interior which I like better. I'm happy with it. The ride is smooth. I did invest in true snow tires for this winter, hopefully it will pay off. The main reason I picked this was V8 engine, Lexus quality and reliability and at least for 2022 it had the apple car play. If the LX 570 had had the apple car play, the V8, which it did, and NOT those stupid jump seats in the back third row I probably would have bought that one. If my Escalade had been better made I would have kept it. I hate to accept it but this Lexus GX 460 rides better, is better made and has overall much better quality than the 2018 cadillac Escalade I had.

Reliability wise the GX, LX and Land Cruiser are going to be pretty much the same. Just depends on the interior space. The LX570 and Land Cruiser have a little bit more interior room. The Lx600 doesn’t. It’s smaller on the inside than the GX due to the second town being fixed and not being able to slide it back. I faced the same decision. A new GX or a LX with 20k for the same price. Ended up buying a new 22 GX because of the better gas mileage(about 2-4 mpg more than the other 2). You still get a V8, full time 4wd as well as the reliability. The GX is an amazing value.

My biggest issues with my 2022 is that the seats are ventilated, but not actively cooled as they should be at this price point. They become useless extremely quickly on a hot and humid day. The seats are also adequate for shorter trips, but become very uncomfortable on longer trips unlike the premium seats that many vehicles at this price point come with. What you do gain though is peace of mind knowing that this thing is going to be pretty darn reliable for a long time. I will probably replace my seats with a set of Scheel Mann seats in a year or so since I do a lot of long driving.

Yep- that's what I did. The new 2024 GX 550 will eventually be a great vehicle, it will have small things to get worked out, just like vevery other new line introduction vehicle. I did not want to wait several years for these quirks to get ironed out, so I bought the last year 2023 V8 and I am so happy with it. Also, the wait for the new GX 550 is insane, at least six months and the pre-order listing is over a year of deposits.

Would you use regular gas if you own one and use it for commute? I think it is perfect for buying and keep it forever, don't like the must use of premium gas though. Also guess 4runner has more higher from the ground driving position and truck like feeling than the GX.

Looking for opinions on whether to go 2023 TRD Pro 4Runner at msrp or a 2022 or 2023 GX as a family car that will be our road trip warrior and see off road action maybe 20 times per year. Pros for 4Runner to me is mostly the cost, color and that it comes fully optioned pretty much due to being the top trim. Pros of the GX are the mostly the V8 sound and ride comfort. If I could get the off road package on a lower trim GX I think that would be the sweet spot but the fact that it needs to be on the luruxy trim, making it 15+ thousand more than the TRD Pro gives me pause. Thanks!

If I was in the market my top two choices would be the 4Runner TRD Off Road or GX. I don't think the price premium for the TRD Pro is justified. Speaking of premium, the Premium fuel requirement on the GX is a substantial ongoing expense. I will never understand how the Tundra and Sequoia offered a 310 hp 4.6 V8 that ran on Regular but the 301 hp 4.6 in the GX requires Premium.

Love the review and this would be my dream spec for sure! But as an owner of a 2010 gx I just could not imagine buying one brand new. The car is so similar it is unbelievable. In 13 years nothing has really changed except the grill, headlights and touchscreen. I will give it to lexus they have kept the msrp almost the exact same as the 2010 around $55k, but the joke is on the consumer who keeps buying these new. The most reliable car over the last decade this is one the best used vehicle options on the market. For a discounted price you basically get the same car as people paying 58-62k

The GX is far cheaper now than it ever has been. You do realize that it cost $53k starting in 2010 vs $57k starting in 2022, right? The GX in 2010 cost the 2022 equivalent of $72,000; it's 21% cheaper to buy new in 2022. If you're on a tight budget then sweet spot is probably buying a 5-6 year old GX for $30-40k but chances are you'll lose another few grand in wear and tear over the first year at that point anyway.

@@wkndwarrior4733 agreed, they've effectively reduced the price over the years, passing along a portion of their savings for the lack of R&D/engineering costs that Toyota/Lexus has put into the vehicle over that span. It's rare to see a flat cost increase (excl. inflation) like that over such a long span of time. Most vehicles go up a few points per year.
