It's not just the tires difference. It's also the HP\torque difference. A different channel ( savgegeese) did a dyno and a very in depth comparison test on both cars at the same place, and the Z has only 372hp\362t and the supra has 397hp\423t + the zf transmission.

True, & BMW always underrate their HP, so I guess Supra falls under that category. The Supra is also 200 pounds lighter than the new Z, which really shows in the higher speeds (especially in the roll races). Even though I still want the Z over the Supra, I love the supra even more now that they came out with Manual.

Nothing unexpected. The Supra puts out more power than is claimed on paper, plus has the ZF 8 speed which is the best conventional automatic money can buy. Also remember the Supra is lighter and has more torque. Base model Z definitely has lots of tuning potential at a fairly attractive price, but stock for stock the Supra is the better car.

I respect the z and Supra very much and look at them equally. But they seem to have different driving ethos which is why I think it's odd to compare them. The Supra still retained its original recipe, rwd, inline six thats highly tunable and offers great driving dynamics. Disregard where Toyota sourced its parts for the Supra, it's still an engaging fun experience that holds true to its predecessors. Just because it's got German DNA doesn't make it a German car. Adding to the note of why I think it's odd to compare them is because they're both tuner cars, they were produced for us to take apart and do what we want with them. It shouldn't matter if one is faster than another in its stock form.

My first Nissan was a 1991 Nissan Sentra SE-R, then came to a 300zx TT, SE-R spec v, a couple of g37 coupes and sedans. 350z and a Q50. I now own a 2017 Q60RS400 which is the same motor on that new Z. I’ve owned one BMW e92 coupe m3 which I loved to death but it came along with a lot of issues and left me stranded a couple of times. As far as technology goes BMW takes the lead with superior engineering but Nissan has a more championship caliber racing heritage than BMW and even Toyota. GTR was banned from racing back then it just dominated the European league. Stock for stock the new Supra is better but when it comes to modding I’m already seeing modded Q50 and Q60 giving a modded new Supra hell.

Wow, I anticipated a door to door race with a slight advantage to the supra. Respect to the supra for giving out 5 of 6 major ass kickings. with the 1 race being pretty close (but still a dub to the supra), which is more like what I expected. Looks like 10% more cost gets you 20-30% better performance. Pretty good ROI

It's not 10% my friend. It's more like 17% ( 60k ×10% it's 66k). Don't forget the tax. With the price difference you can change the tires, suspension, mufflers, tune it, and it will still be cheaper. I don't think that the performance gap is that big. Both are fast cars. I think the Z is more spacious and comfortable.

The Z just needs to be learned. People serious about racing can manipulate it. For example people in 10 speed mustangs start the race in manual mode and once underway they switch to auto mode on the fly. That is the best way to get the fastest result from a roll in the Mustang. I’m betting the Z can do the same thing. Get some good rubber and hopefully reviews start turning around for the Z.

I think it comes down to gear ratio, low end torque and the 200lb weight advantage. The Z just cant quite match the supra. With better tires though and some weight shaving it could be almost neck n neck

Nothing about this was unexpected honestly the Supra power is underrated. Also the new z just hit a new stock turbo record off the trailer 1st run for the vr30 at a 10.4 525whp which beats the b58 stock turbo record and the car has not even been dialed in yet as tuners are just getting used to the new z shows where the platform is going

Where do you draw the line for disappointment? Bmw 340ix with the same b58 will be way faster in 1/4 and 0-100/0-60 and more importantly stable, does it make supra shit? Those manual rwd powerful coupes are for driver's enjoyment and one should select it according to one's background, not by synthetic youtube testing. For example, I own a 550hp skyline r33 1996, which is a complete rocketship, it spits fire, does massive burnouts, drives like hell. Will I ever select supra as a replacement as it's faster and more refined? Of course not, it's a very synthetic and complete car, there is nothing for me to do with it. So for me the only disappointment with Z is that it's not for sale properly yet.

@@captainbarge big difference there. The 370z was sold from 2009. In 2009, the 370z was VERY competitive in the market. The new Z shares a very similar platform and even uses some same exact parts 13 years later. People expected a new sports car, around 50k, that would be able to compete with the best others had to offer. It would be different if the straight line held its own vs the competition and the handling fell short or vice versa. But you have a car that stock to stock comes in last in almost every category. It even gets the same mpg as a scat pack charger. Handling is let down by the tires but you hear people all the time talk about how soft, and unsettled it is around a track. The supra faced disappointment when it first came out because people expected a mark iv and got a car that was mostly bmw. However, the supra is so damn good around a track, as a daily, and in a straight line that it can overcome it. The new Z has just fallen short.

Bad exhaust note? It will be replaced anyway. Old platform? I will have wider mods selection. Supra/whatever faster? Compare any 400bhp manual cars on real streets, you won't get the same result 3 times out of 3. And it's 10k less :) I understand your point, but raise you another: Z is soulful and has car enthusiast appeal, while it's unmeasurable, it places it ahead in my books

Btw I'd trust a 2jz more than an rb26. The vg30dett wouldn't come close to a 2jz. This supra doesn't even have a toyota heart. But I still like it more that the vr30ddtt, b58 sounds way better as well. Edit: don't want to seem biased in any way I like imports all around, just didn't make sense in my head for the constant comparisons.

No surprises here, BMW's 382HP is obviously very conservative and the ZF8HP is just hands down a superior transmission. BTW - 50 KPH = 31 MPH, not 32. :-)

People continue to make the mistake of looking at raw numbers ie. hp, torque, etc. etc. and automatically THINK because someone has more hp on paper, then that car should be faster!🤣🤨...The Supra is highly underated (a common fact with German autos) it's putting to the rear wheels (give or take) what it's rated at the fly wheel!! Then there are a whole bunch of other factors that people tend to ignore...(UNTIL they get gapped!🤣) such as weight, torque, tires, transmission, where the car is actually making its power, etc.

VR30s once modded are impressive. Open deck design and stinky transmissions leave it at a pretty low ceiling but they’d be fun. B58 is already known to put down some real power without needing to crack the engine open, the transmission is a different story.

AMS ran 9 second with a stock engine, stock transmission in the Z. I wouldnt consider that a low ceiling at all. A 9 seconds, 10 second 1/4 mile in the street is a super fast car for more than 90% of other cars.

Z is a cool car but it's on the same platform as the 370z(13 year old) and it's heavy with a crappy auto. The Supra is just better engineered all the way around(and lighter)and it makes a lot more power than the Z. It has potential though.

Jason Camissa did a great comparison on the Hagerty channel as well. The Supra is simply a better car irrespective of the badging under the hood. Apparently it tunes like a fiend as well. Add in the vast difference in interior quality as well, its a no brainer as to which is preferable.
