I'll certainly be checking out Ironsworn eventually - almost bought it on eBay the other day but was outbid! Now I know that printing from drivethrurpg is fairly affordable, I'll be picking it up before too long.

@@lone_adventurer friend of mine here in the states bought the hard bound of Starforged, it was fairly well done... not sure if there is a hard bound of Ironsworn.

Here in the States, I'm having the same issue with Notorious - all that's kept me from buying a hard copy is that the price of shipping the $19 book would be another $14. Sadly, it would cost nearly as much to have it printed in color by a provider here in the States (though I did get Glide in that fashion)
@lone_adventurer
@lone_adventurer Жыл бұрын
Yep that shipping can be a real killer. That said, I would have probably have spent a lot more money on books if I was able to buy from US stores, so at least I'm being frugal 😛
@HeadHunterSix
@HeadHunterSix Жыл бұрын
@@lone_adventurer I thought about it, realized that if I was going to spend the same from a PoD in the States or direct from the publisher in the UK, more of it would go to Jason, which is a good thing, even if it's a bit of a longer wait. And though $33 sounds like a pricey total, I've spent as much on game books that have seen less use and given not nearly as much enjoyment. So I ordered a copy from AlwaysCheckers. I'd wanted to before, but I'm leery of paying by Stripe, while PayPal is a safer means.

Brother, the Black hack and White hack have no correlation. The White hack is based of D&D White box set, and the Black hack is named after Mr Black who wrote it. They are both based off D&D but different versions of 1e

Great video! When I solo ttrpg I found out that rules-light rpgs works better. D&D is the worst, Old-school Essentials is pretty ok, but Into the Odd is the best. It’s so minimal that all rules can be put on 1 page. I started to leave random tables since The Mythic GM emulator 2e came out which can replace all random tables if you have decent imagination.
@lone_adventurer
@lone_adventurer Жыл бұрын
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I'm definitely edging towards a simple system (I've made a note to check out Into The Odd). I've got a copy of the Mythic Emulator, though I'm not sure I'll be using it (I know many people are huge fans, but I think I like the idea of using a range of resources).

@@lone_adventurer Into the Odd is set into a more steampunk industrial setting which I like. If you are more into classic fantasy then Cairn is also a great choice. It’s a combination of Into the Odd and Knave. Its also very rules light and also free on DriveThruRPG. Highly recommend.

As you like more game structured RPG experiences have you played boardgames like Gloomhaven , Talisman or Betrayal at The House On The Hill where there is a little bit of RPG? Though I would say that they don't really lend themselves easily to solo play
@lone_adventurer
@lone_adventurer 18 күн бұрын
I've played a bit of Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion. I've played a little bit more Folklore: The Affliction - though I should have played way more considering how much stuff I have for that game! And I've got Sleeping Gods patiently waiting on my shelf ready to go. I've never tried Talisman and played Betrayal once but didn't get on with it...

I've been playing RPGS going back to the late 1970s when I was introduced to Dungeon and Dragons white box. It is nice to see new generations of RPG gamers discovering the older versions. With that said, I play Ironsworn over the OSR/Originals as it stands on the shoulders of those systems when it comes to narrative play and theater of the mind. For solo play, Ironsworn is ridiculously good. It's adaptation of the Powered by the Apocolypse system is clever and very suitable for solo play. The Delve Expansion (which is a purchase) is a must have in my opinion as it takes Ironsworn into the depths.

Firstly, I'd like to thank you for referring to me as of a new generation of anything :D Yes, I'm conscious of Ironsworn being the gold-standard in solo gaming and I have read through a lot of the rulebook in the past, but I wasn't (and probably as still not) ready to take that game on. Soon though! I think I'm hoping to be able to justify picking up physical copies of Ironsworn and Delve at some point this year.

@@lone_adventurer I didn't mean you specifically as a new-generation player. Covid, Big Bang Theory, Critical Role, and Stranger Things have caused growth and interest in RPGs. Dungeon and Dragons seeing the lion's share of that growth. We'll set aside the current mess that WotC has recently made of their brand. I'd recommend, If you're not aware, Trevor Devall and his KZbin channel Me, Myself, and Die. His rules of choice for the "second season" of his solo roleplaying session use Ironsworn. He uses his professional voice acting skills and that makes watching his gameplay rather entertaining. His channel is how I discovered Ironsworn and provided a point of reference when reading and learning the rules. I just figured I would pass along my recommendation for Ironsworn. It has brought me a lot of enjoyment in solo play as well as GM-guided play. I hope you find the same with it.

Great video. I share many of your tastes in gaming. Quick question - As a UK gamer where do you get card decks printed? Drivethru RPG is prohibitively expensive. I would’ve bought many decks by now if not for that…
@lone_adventurer
@lone_adventurer Жыл бұрын
Thanks! If you're referring to the decks in games like Iron Helm and Desolate, I've printed them myself (either at home or through a printing company) and then made the cards myself. It is time-consuming, but worth it!
