Have the same issue with my new Tiger 850 Sport, only has about 300 miles in the odometer so it hasn't gone into its first service. Also suspected that the o-ring is not the correct one because the fit was not tight as in other bikes I had. Will follow your advice and avoid forcing the stealership to actually do some diagnostic work and getting frustrated in the process. Thanks a lot for taking the time and effort to do this and make a video about it! Safe riding!

Good deal it was an easy to DIY fix problem the dealer ignored. Sheet dealer service hope you don't have to deal with them again. Make sure you use a good quality o ring and not the cheap china ones, They are as weak and degrade as quick as the dealer you visited. Thanks for the videos on your 2023. I am still on the fence on a new one or keep the older Tiger. Safe travels and thank again.

You know, if I was a salesman; and this just how I am, I would be educating myself and researching issue folks have with the bike or any product I was selling. I mean how many times have you walked into a showroom of any type and the salesmen are playing on their phones. This is great info to have and makes you to the customer you know about the product. You tell your customer listen, if this starts leaking a little after you buy it, this O-ring will fix it. Heck, if it is only .50 O-ring bring me the receipt and I'll pay you out of my pocket. I guess going the extra mile is a lost art. Great info.
@LivingOffTheSlab Жыл бұрын
The sales folks and the mechanics rely on the manufactures for "service bulletins." If they don't get any they are often in the dark, until it happens. I get the mechanic thinking it was residual oil, I did the same when it first happened, but they should have listened to me when I said it was leaking. I have made the service folks and my sales person aware of the issue, so hopefully they will handle it differently the next time it shows up.

My wife and I had a 20' Yamaha MT-10 that I tried to make it a sport tourer. But the gas mileage was bad and it wasn't all that comfortable after so long in the saddle. So I sold it and bought a new motocross bike instead because I missed racing. But After getting back into it again after 22yrs, it's harder than I remembered it being due to me being 54yrs old. LOL! Now I miss riding a street bike with my wife. I demoed a 22' BMW 1250 GSA and was disappointed in the acceleration. Now I'm looking at the Tiger 1200 GT Explorer. I've seen that issue before and the dealer replaced the o ring. I think the original o ring needs to be exactly in the middle of the recess when the cap goes back on but it probably moves a bit as you tighten it.
@LivingOffTheSlab2 жыл бұрын
The o-ring goes around the cap, there is no way for it to be moved. The cap bottoms out on the cover before the o-ring can be compressed enough to seal. Either the o-ring is too small or the recess on the cover was milled too deep.

Only time will tell if this is a small issue, since most factory flaws are rooted in manufacturer's attitudes. Here are 2 more issues I recently read about the new Tiger 1200 - the hydraulic clutch not being adjusted properly at the dealership, and leaking clutch slave cylinders.... "New bike: 2022 Tiger 1200 GT Explorer Picked it up on Friday, rode away very carefully and gingerly, new bike and all getting familiar with the biting point etc is something that just comes with time." "Naturally, new engine has run in requirements and has its restrictions, can't go above 3.5k rpm for first 100 miles so it's very careful riding and no high revs - because of this one wouldn't notice a clutch issue, because you're treating it like a newborn." "The first time I noticed the engine not giving its full power was when I went for my first overtake - pulled the trigger and it revved without pulling the bike. Me being the optimistic chump I am assumed this was a rev-protection feature to do with the run-in period....surely it's not a clutch issue..." "I'm obviously taking the bike back to have it sorted, but I'm after the following advice because this for me has killed the joy of my first zero-mile machine." "When it came to this process, I did it all by the book - the bedding in the lot, it's precious to me because I want the absolute best engine for its entire life time. Now I find the entire time the clutch has been slipping, from 1st gear on every launch, to 5th and 6th gear when trying to pull away at 60/70/80 MPH - engine revved and clutch slipped, it took about 30 seconds to get from 70 to 80 because it was slipping so hard." "Could this have damaged the run-in process? When we run in are we doing it only to the engine pistons side or to the crank/clutch side also? Is there any, and I mean ANY way, this stupid screw up will have cause some kind of minor damage to the new perfect engine during its first 300miles?" "250 miles later and we've unlocked up to 5k rpm. Now it's painfully obvious that the clutch is slipping:. Any attempt to take off quickly, even within the 5k range, results in the revs flying and the bike not pulling. In addition to the horrible feeling powerless engine, I stopped to find oil had leaked surrounding the main engine oil cap, but was unable to tell if this had leaked from the cap itself or from the hydraulic clutch." "As for the hydraulic clutch, apparently its somewhat different to previous versions and is externally adjustable, even though its hydraulic - it caught them out and they apologized; its now its adjusted and working as intended." "I just got unlucky with an o-ring and a clutch that caught the technicians off-guard - please do learn from this and if the clutch feels like it has a very late biting point when you ride it away, or after you unlock 5k RPM it isnt pulling with the revs, take it back right away and let them know its a new style clutch!" "They were able to fix my clutch with just an adjustment, haven't had any issues since - however I am still getting a slight oil leak and they've replaced the oil cap o-ring twice now, if it leaks again I'll take note of your issue and push for a full inspection on the slave cylinder!" "600 miles and 5 days with new Tiger 1200 GT PRO and clutch not clearing. Located to leaking clutch slave cylinder. Replaced under warranty and dealer told me that replacement cylinder looked very different to original. Also, another bike in showroom had leaking slave cylinder for which Triumph was ending replacement. Bad batch or design fault? What is the extent of recall? No problems since, further 600 miles and enjoying bike, drive and handling is awesome." "Looks like a slave cylinder leak. Triumph will replace under warranty. I would go sooner rather than later. My bike is going back again on Saturday for investigation into headlight mount. The headlight can be moved, as if the cushion has become dislodged." "The slave cylinder is on top of the clutch housing behind the guard that is next to the oil filler cap - the master cylinder is on the handlebar. The cable going to the lever on the clutch housing comes from the slave cylinder and there is some manual adjustment." "I have a new (3 weeks old) GT Explorer with exactly the same issue as yours. I called my Triumph dealer today and they said - master cylinder fault and to send it in via Triumph recovery. Really not happy about it. Why over engineer a bike - it’s more complicated, more expensive and less reliable than a traditional cable. Miffed!"

I take it that your oil filler cap is bottoming on the case outside of of the spot-faced area for the o-ring? My BMW oil filler bottoms on the o-ring itself, not on the case so the o-ring is always well compressed. It sounds like Triumph designed their cap to bottom hard on the case and then didn’t use a large enough section o-ring to fill the space left. The fact that only a small number of bikes have this problem suggests a manufacturing error rather than a design error. I am guessing that your case may have been spot-faced a little too deep leaving too much of a gap for the 18x3.
@LivingOffTheSlab2 жыл бұрын
That is it exactly.

Easy fix, but that doesn't inspire any confidence for any bigger issues one might come across with being treated that way by a Triumph dealer. Glad you found the solution, to what could be a potential design or manufacturing batch issue at Triumph. Hope that's the last of your issues with the bike!

Bit off topic, but I've been watching your videos on the Triumph Tiger. My wife is 4foot 11, and we bumped into a guy with an older Tiger that he lowered. My wife sat on it, and voila, she fit! So off we went looking for a Tiger. Came perilously close to buying one until I found out that every 12k miles is a $1550 valve adjustment! So basically, I would need to throw that our each year on top of all the other upkeep costs. Total deal breaker. Great bike, but sorry, that's insane.
@LivingOffTheSlab Жыл бұрын
The newer bikes are every 20K miles so it is a bit better. Every non v-twin requires periodic value adjustments. True of Triumph, BMW, Ducati, Yamaha, Honda, etc. The prices vary but it is still a big job for every bike. The Yamaha Super Tenere requires it every 26K and it runs between $800 to $1000. The BMW K1600 is every 18K and runs closer to $2K.
