This is the screencast on the material from the first lecture of the fall 2024 semester at USM in CHE 255 organic chemistry 1. In this lecture screencast, the molecule AZT is introduced as a means to show the impact of organic chemistry in society. In the slide deck, we answer questions pertaining to the structural features of AZT to develop a deeper understanding of the molecule aside from just memorizing the structure. In that regard, we start to think about the what elements are present. How many are present? How do we calculate molecular formula? How are the bonding patterns different for each element? How do the elements achieve an octet? What allows the same element to have different bonding patterns? Through these questions we will begin to develop a chemical intuition that will allow us to understand the impact of organic chemistry on society.
