Just finished watching most of the Pet Food Puzzle Guy's videos, and found your channel yesterday due to his referral. EYE-OPENING, is all I can say. Unfortunately, for most of our 12 year Coton's life, we were completely taken in by all the "boutique/designer" dog foods who touted the ingredient panel. It was only because of our recent switch(3 months ago) of her diet to Farmer's, that brought us to his and your channel. She had been on Freshpet for years and did perfectly fine. 4 vets later, we seemingly FINALLY got her terminal itching under control via a cyto-point injection. Her allergic reaction to the Farmer's was off the chain. We now have her on Hills ZD, hydrolyzed kibble. Never, will we buy another "designer" bag of kibble who touts the ingredient panel. Will keep you posted on how she does on the Hills ZD. Keep the GREAT info coming. Thank you.

Fresh pet has a lot of additives, I wouldn’t consider it a designer kibble. Designer kibble is more like Open Farm, canine caviar etc… these foods aren’t available in the super market or petco.

They aren’t saying fresh pet is designer, they are saying they were fine on fresh pet until they switched to designer

Do you have a review of the royal canine Shih tzu specific dog food?
@danskdna8550Ай бұрын
Royal Canin Ultamino was the only food that my dog can eat without getting diarrhea with mucus and blood, throwing up bright yellow. I tried at least 20 types of food including raw, cooked homemade and prescription foods. Nothing worked. Royal Canin (after slow introduction, as always), in about 3 weeks, was the answer. Zero snacks ever as it only takes literally one piece of cheerios or 1 piece of meat to make her have acid reflux again. This food is expensive, but cheaper than all the constant vet visits, and she eats ok and is a normal dog. 3 years now, she is doing great.
@hmchomes86919 ай бұрын
May not be specific to this particular food... What I really want to understand is the carbohydrates % in dog food and its long term effects. There is no specific spec or info on carbo level and we know majority percent of food is carbo in dry food, and is likely much higher than protein or fat. And if protein is lower the carbo would be even higher. Understand the load too much protein puts on kidney but please also explain too much carbo effect on pancreas which produces insulin and consequently potential risk of diabetes (Also understand higher fat is also not good for pancreas). So higer protein vs higher carbo... Which is safer?
@AnimalDocRea9 ай бұрын
There is a whole chapter on carbs in dogs in the textbook link in the description box Wich may help answer this question.

Thank you, Dr Rea. I am really enjoying this series. I am surprised the Royal Canin small dog dental kibble wasn't chosen, as dental issues are such an issue for small dogs. Maybe it's because other dogs are like mine, and refuse to eat it. lol

Thank you for your great videos! Like a lot of people, I've been watching a lot of videos and reading a lot of articles trying to find the best food for my dog. One topic, out of many, that I've come across that has conflicting information is on food rotation. Not just rotating your dog's protein, but also changing the brand of food. I was wondering what your thoughts are on this?
@AnimalDocRea9 ай бұрын
Rotation is not advised as it causes GI indiscretion, encourages being a finicky eater, and can cause food allergy by exposing the immune system to multiple ingredients. So totally not necessary and potentially detrimental. My motto is set it and forget it.

I've just acquired a 3yo chihuahua who has been fed supermarket own brand. I have been researching what to switch to. In the UK the only WSAVA - guideline brands are Purina, Hill's and Royal Canin. Iams has been sold to a European manufacturer. I bought Iams to start because I wanted a major brand that didn't use wolves or orthorexic human faddish ideas on the packaging. Then I was swayed by the price and, I admit, the cute dog on the bag. 😂 Now I know about WSAVA and Iams and I'm looking for a permanent brand once this bag is finished. This video is swaying me to RC. (I initially snubbed the brand because they had different foods for chihuahua, pomeranian, corgi, etc and I figured that was dumb so it prejudiced me against them, along with the price.)

Can you address the rumors going around the.internet regarding purina and possibly other dog foods? Any ideas on what may be going on?

At present they are just rumors, no facts. Fear being perpetuated and sensationalized. Until there is actual evidence I don’t plan to participate in the fear mongering just to get views or sell my dog food ( not that I have dog food to sell)

Not sure if I updated on our 12 year old with the food allergic reaction. After about 3-4 weeks, the z/d did NOT seem to help. But she may gotten mites, so vet put her on 4 oral doses of ivermectin (once a week), & we switched her to Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin/Stomach Salmon(vet said his other client had good results with that). Our little girl is back to normal self(minus ear hair she had furiously scratched off over the weeks). And we continue the Pro Plan. Was it the ivermectin/ridding of the possible mites or was it the Pro Plan or both? We plan on doing the Pro Plan a few more weeks, & then slowly reintroduce the z/d(which has chicken liver in it BTW) & she IS allergic to chicken. We just want to know what set her off to begin with, wuich we beloeve was the Farmer's Dog food we tried back in January, but we WON'T be reintroducing that product.

Hello Rea! I had a question regarding my pet. (english bulldog puppy 5 months). He is 38 lbs right now and I was planning to switch his food to Hill’s science. Do you recommend Hill’s science small breed or large breed food for him, and it comes with 2 flavors: chicken & rice and Lamb meal & rice. Could you please help me out. Your help is greatly appreciated

It doesn’t matter the flavor honestly just pick one. For an English I would do a large breed formula for lower fat as they are disposed to obesity

DocRea. I sure hope you see this soon. I have two miniature schnauzers. I started them out on Purina Pro Plan chicken and rice. The one was biting his feet so I was assuming he had allergies to the chicken. So I switched to Purina Pro Plan sensitive skin and stomach. They didn’t seem to be a big fan of it. So again I switched to Wholesome beef. This video wants me to switch to Royal Canin. I’m so confused on what to do… I’ve been watching videos after videos on dry kibble. Some are saying that Royal Canin is not a good brand. I’m not saying I don’t believe you by all means. I love your videos. Please lead me in the right direction. The reason I wanted to switch from the wholesome is because the one is getting chunky and the other one is not really eating it. ( 6yr old and an 3 year old)Ugh l! I watched videos on spot & tango,open farm, Ollie, Carna4, the honest kitchen,natures logic,wellness,. Now I’m really confused! I keep bunching back and forth and I want to pick one and be done. Please give me what you think would be the best for my dogs. Why is this so hard? TIA
@AnimalDocRea5 ай бұрын
I think that since you have pets with medical issues ( obesity and puritis) the best thing to do is to have a visit with your vet. Stop stressing and let them help guide you more efficiently to the right answer. Aimlessly changing foods cause a more damage than good and a more directed approach is probably best at this point.

Why people saying Royal Canin is killing their pets
@AnimalDocRea6 ай бұрын
I’ve not heard that, but people can say whatever they want, doesn’t mean it’s true. I see thousands of patients a year, no food related illnesses.

NEVER follow the suggested servings on the bag. These companies are in the business of selling food, not optimal care of your dog. I was eating Royal Canine and following the bag suggestions I became over weight in a matter of weeks. I reached 29 pounds and a not healthy zone. ...YES WEEKS. My food was being weighed as the bag suggested. BIG MISTAKE! After making adjustments to 1 cup per day( I am currently 28 pounds..suppose to be around 22-24 pounds) I was able to start getting my weight back down. I have always walked almost 2 miles a day and am considered more active than many dogs my breed. Eating more veggies and fruit and WAY LESS kibble has been a life saver literally. Sad how many vets recommend Royal Canine. I appreciate all your info, so I thought you would appreciate some of my real life info. Enjoy.

@@AnimalDocRea so you would recommend Royal Canine over Wellness Complete Adult?
@norbertbarreto9747Ай бұрын
Corn, chicken by-products, brewers rice as the top 3 ingredients don’t really sound like quality ingredients to me. All proteins are not created equal and have different amino acid profiles. Why isn’t that ever taken into account on your analysis? Just wondering because i really do enjoy your content otherwise.
@AnimalDocReaАй бұрын
Because for real nutritionists the ingredients are only a tool to achieve a nutrition profile. It’s marketers who convince the lay population that the ingredient itself matters. It’s so hard to respond to this comment because it will involve unraveling some of the more common misunderstandings perpetuated by pet food marketers. 1. How do you know the quality of an ingredient by the name listed on a package…well you look at the nutrient profile it provides, that’s the only concrete way, doesn’t matter what it “sounds” like. Sound/feelings=marketing 2. Proteins do have different amino acid profiles, but all the common proteins used in pet foods contain all the amino acids so it’s a non issue. So it’s not that these things aren’t taken into to account, it’s that they don’t superseded the actual reason why food is fed….for the lifestage specific nutrition. Marketers bank on being able highjack a persons emotions with the knowledge that the average person cannot possible know the actual science behind nutrition, that’s why I’m trying to show you exactly what you may not know.
