Definitely agree with making sure your mental health is good. I took commissions while I wasn't doing too hot and I didn't like anything I was making. I also really low balled myself. When I look back on those pieces now, they're actually quite good, but I just couldn't see it at the time.

In August I was able to permanently kick my depression/self loathing/eat healthier. It's no coincidence I picked up art after 15 years that same month. EDIT: Felt compelled to post this after the 1:21 mark because it's so true.

@@TheArtMentor Took the last year and a half off from work to just figure stuff out. Gonna go back into sales/leadership (remote) so I can fund some sort of passive income (stickers/prints) to start a non profit bird sanctuary. Ideally I'd like to transition to full time freelance while I rescue birds.

@@TheArtMentor Currently working on a game art portfolio, specializing in environment art. It's a whole new world for me and I'm learning so many cool concepts. Been thinking about doing some asset packs for extra money, given how popular independent game development is becoming. Mostly just grinding away on the portfolio, and your wisdom and advice has certainly helped with having a better perspective on the creative process, and the art industries.

Hmmmmmmmmm…. Haven’t had much “business” growth I have one consistent client who I appreciate a lot, but I’d like that side to grow… I do wonder if it’s the style of art I’m creating in, or if I need to improve before people seek out my work, or even my lack of pushing my commissions out.
@TheArtMentor7 ай бұрын
So how clear are you on what you're offering?
@wildwavesairsoft7 ай бұрын
@@TheArtMentor I’d say I’m pretty clear, and listed in many of my descriptions and profile areas even tried and ad post or two that offered value for the viewer. Tried a commission sheet or two, and tried finding clients without and found having the sheet was a little more successful in terms of inquiry. Still though I don’t want my feed to become all about commission ads because I think the ultimate way to become successful is to provide things people want to see on the internet, which really is my end goal, so I’ve posted less commission Ads lately I’ve considered a “tip the artist” option for people swinging by but have yet to research or set that up. Also considered a “your character here” type of ad.

That first guideline, mental health? Critical. Granted you can't put your life on hold completely to wait out a funk, because part of what improves mental health is the feeling of using your skills and having some meaning to your life, but absolutely, jumping into a new job which requires self esteem, fortitude in the fact of criticism and strong boundaries will not magically give you those skills.

Are people really that resentful of breifs? To me I've always had the attitude that as long as I'm doing something creative it doesn't matter, and even if I'm not making all the descisions creatively, people must be working with me because they like something about my specific style or work. Tbh breifs are great, they allow me to not have the pressure to think of my own ideas, say if I'm burnt out, and focus on the purely technical elements of my work. I feel reassured in a way that even though this video didn’t exactly teach me anything new, I'm on the right path when I begin to freelance as a proper job. I've done a few commissions already, and they've given me the knowledge I need to pursue it.
@TheArtMentor5 ай бұрын
Yeah you'd be surprised how many artists have an ego about their ideas lol. I mean it makes sense, often you have a better idea than the client, and that can get in the way of completing the task or making the client happy. Does that make sense?
