Love your character, Mr Pie. Mostly on the money. My only concern about your take arose when you linked the tacit acceptance of high immigration to an unwillingness to tackle shortages in "training our own", investing in infrastructure etc. As an immigrant in an immigration-heavy sector (uni, teaching and researching on health/social care-related subjects), training the next generation of workers who include many 2nd-generation immigrant folk, I have reason to believe immigration is, on balance, part of the solution here, too; the problems are rooted in demographics and chronic under-investment unrelated to immigration. The UK actually has a hidden success story in making immigration socially beneficial -- if only more politicians and comedians dared to tell it.

Up until 2015, the EU was often blamed for the problems that the UK government has to deal with. Since Brexit, the boats are now the new scapegoat. Governments always look to blame others, it rarely admits its own mistakes. I am directly affected by legal immigration on a personal level. I am disabled and have carers. English people rarely take these jobs, so foreign workers are needed to fill the vacancies. The company that I have, has about 200 carers. In the last 2 years, they have only had one English carer work for them. They quit after 3 days saying, “the work is too hard”. Up until 2015, many of those carers were from Europe, while now, most are from Africa, with a few from Asia. We are an aging nation, and do not have enough young people who can and are willing to look after us. Changes brought in by the current government are making it more difficult to attract carers to come here from overseas, meaning that people like myself, are in a position where it is becoming more difficult for us to be able to stay in our own homes. This in turn affects tax payers, as they will have to foot the bill, for us to live in homes, and at a much greater expense. I am in favour of legal immigration, for those who can work in areas where we have shortages. I am in favour of students from overseas, as it brings much needed money to our universities. I am also in favour of immigration for people who fall in love with people from other nations. My late wife was from the USA, and I learnt that getting into the UK is not easy, and that it is very expensive. Anyone who says it is easy, has never experienced our immigration system. It is anything but easy to get into this country, I can assure you of that. Also, for the small number of people who claim asylum, their cases should be dealt with quickly, this way, they either get to stay and pay tax, or have to leave. This way the burden on taxpayers is minimal. My points are not political, and are related to my observations and personal experiences. Also I am not a Labour voter, however I am not opposed to them forming the next government. Finally I would like to say, that my African carers, who are mostly from Nigeria, are wonderful people. They look after me incredibly well, and genuinely care about me. They treat me like a human being, and not just a client. They also spoil me rotten. Nothing is too much trouble for them. They remind me a lot of how people used to treat each other in this country many years ago. It is refreshing to experience this again.

I can understand what it’s like about your late wife. Me and my girlfriend (from the USA too) are 21 and it’s a hassle and expensive, for her to get a visa, let alone to even try and work here in a full career, as all companies would have to deal with visa applications/troubles and would just prefer UK citizens than others from overseas. People from overseas are willing to work tooth and nail to make a living here… It’s a shame that, at some point in time, she just won’t have the money or benefits to live here with me and she will have to go back home. And I love her to bits.
@TheSnowdogsShorts6 ай бұрын
@@-CS101- My wife overcame the issues eventually, by her becoming a British citizen. Things became much easier after that. My daughter also married someone from the USA, and chose to live there instead, as it was much easier and cheaper than trying to live over here. In my personal experience, I find that English men and American women, make for the best couples. I have since found love a second time, with another American. She still lives in the USA. I wish you and your girlfriend all the best, and hope you have as much happiness and love as my wife and had living together in the same country.
@TheSnowdogsShorts6 ай бұрын
@@-CS101- just a thought, but if she got a job in caring or healthcare, she would be exempt from needing a minimum income to live here. It might be an option that is worth considering. Don’t ever give up trying to be together. My wife was deported one time, and she was originally not allowed to come back. But I didn’t give up. Eventually after 6 months of her being deported back to the USA, we managed to get the deportation overturned. Getting married in the USA helped our case considerably. Getting married in the UK does not help anywhere near as much, as they often suspect it as being a marriage of convenience, and this leads to being investigated by immigration.
@-CS101-6 ай бұрын
@@TheSnowdogsShorts oh no. It isn’t anything of healthcare workers, she studied for 3 years and maybe more if she’s willing to, to become a lawyer, or anything on that side of the spectrum. I am a paver, I have to kill myself for a living. Hard work, construction is dangerous anyway cos the digger driver could be off his tits. When we left the EU my wages instantly went up. Should hardworking people just have accepted less money because you thought it was bad? Life is survival mate. I wouldn't do care work either. I slept next to my dad for months when he had cancer so he would never be alone. I wouldn't do care work out of principle. It's paid too badly. But people paying for the care pay a lot. How about having a go at the middle men instead of people who can't afford to live on min wage when they could quite easily afford to pay proper wage. I would have cared for my dad Indefinitely. Half the problem is people won't care for their own families. If they did like in other countries there would be no need for so many carers.

Totally agree, but please stop using the term "illegal immigrants" for asylum seekers. This term can only be used fir those foreigners who have no legal reason to stay in the country. Asylum seekers have that reason, can arrive by any means to the country of their choice to start their application. Saying that coming by small boat or that they have to apply in the first safe country is a lie, ignorant or malicious. Plenty of illegal British immigrants to the EU after Brexit, as they never registered for legal residence. To stop deaths and people trafficking in the channel, increase the numbers of officials dealing with applications, start the process in France as they have generously offered, create a safe route and make sure that they can work if waiting over 6 months for a decision, so they can support themselves. The Tories have created this issue and allowed people dying in the channel only to have yet another scapegoat while destroying the country.

1997 - 2010 was *orders of magnitude* better than this current shit show. They grew the economy more than Thatcher ever did (and Thatcher only ever grew the economy by selling off public services), and way more than the current ineptitude of Tories (I vote that either "Ineptitude" , "Corruption", or "Scandal" should become the new collective noun for a group of Tories). Also, wages grew more (both in "real terms" (i.e. when accounting for inflation) and in actual terms) under New Labour than they did in either the preceding Tory government (Thatcher/Major), or the ones that came after them. Currently, wages in real terms are the same as they were in 2010. Let that one sink in. Further, let it sink in that energy costs and food costs have far outstripped the baseline rates of inflation on which "real terms" wages calculations are made, so that means you're actually poorer now than you were in 2010. Even further than that, let it sink in that wages on average dropped in real terms between 2008 and 2010 due to the effects of the financial crash of 2008. As for the financial crash of 2008, current and ex Tory MPs were directly involved in it - see Sunak's involvement with the TCI team that took down ABN Amro and facilitated its sale to RBS, a move which was a direct contributor to the downfall of RBS and its subsequent bailout by the government. There were other current or ex Tory MPs (Zahawi and Javid spring to mind) that were involved in hedge funds and stocks at the time. All of this is documented fact. Finally, the next governments' (whoever that may be, although it's very likely to be Labour) first job will be to unfuck the entire country, thanks to the absolute carnage the Tories will have left them. 5 years from now, the Tories will be howling derision at the government at the state of the country, claiming that it's all the governments fault, trying to con the public into forgetting their own 14 years of utter depravity.

The immigration issue that is central to the collapse of our society, whether it be NHS waiting times, no available GP's, social housing shortages, no school spaces, increases in crime, anti white propaganda in all media was caused entirely by Blair and the Labour government with their open borders and 'equality acts' (which basically meant all minorities were immune from open criticism, except from white people) and every subsequent government was unable to reverse this (I'm not sticking up for the tories, they were useless) but I like the way you are already making excuses for the next (non tory) government for being unable to improve anything by blaming today's tories 😂 and ignoring that Labour caused this originally and the root cause is STILL not being addressed by labour in their manifesto is why the next (labour) government will see even greater collapse to this country. We all know why the uk is collapsing and according to you and other labour fan boys, it DEFINITELY has nothing to do with the 1.4 million uneducated, unskilled illegal migrants coming to the uk every year. Neither Labour or the Tories have the stomach for a frank conversation on immigration. It's a problem and it's not just going to go away.
@wolfen2109596 ай бұрын
The problem of immigration was deliberately created by closing all of the legal immigration routes, and making it difficult for Europeans to remain in the UK after Brexit. So approx 400,000 European nurses, doctors, engineers, etc, left the UK and went home, suddenly we had shortages of trained personnel, because the Tories decided, in 2014, that we no longer needed to train our own nurses, doctors, engineers, etc. We have almost a generations worth of untrained teenagers, because the Tories did not want to train them, those teenagers were "encouraged" to take low paid, low skilled jobs in call centres, fast food outlets amd the gig economy. The answer, for the Tories, was obvious, they started importing trained nurses, doctors, engineers, from Asia and Africa. We simply must begin training our own nurses, doctors, and engineers, or the problem of immigration will never be mitigated. Oh, and opening a processing centre for asylum seekers in France, as the French have repeatedly offered, must be done. If only 400,000 trained personnel were effectively sent home in 2021, why do we now have 1.4 million work and student visas being issued? What else are we not being told?

@@wolfen210959 I agree with you that Brexit was very poorly managed, but immigration was an issue way before. It was one of the biggest drivers of the Leave vote to begin with.

And when they were done, a bunch of people in boats came across the Channel from France and never left.

As an American whose country isn’t handling immigration any differently, and failing just as miserably, I listen to Jonathan Pie nodding yes all the way through. OMG.

Ditto for Australia. I think "Stop the boats" was one of our brilliant slogans.

"failing" isn't whats happening in America. The current Democrat admin has successfully created the crisis they want. They want mass immigration and future generations of voters. This is why they spent all their energy suing Texas than actually slowing down immigration. They want it. Biden signed the most executive orders in history when he got into office, removing all Trumps immigration safeguards. His numbers make Obama and Trump look like small fry. It's by design Sara.
