One reason for the longer wheelbase and wider track is that it increases the vehicle "footprint". The bigger footprint makes it easier to meet federal fuel economy standards. The bigger the footprint the lower the mpg needs to be to meet the standard.

bingo. Also the reason for 2 door regular cabs only being built in work truck trims.

Yep! The key reason why Americans can’t get small trucks anymore (unlike, say, Japan’s handy K-trucks)…is because of our Federal govt’s ham-handed fuel efficiency & crash test rules. As a result, more Americans are dying after being slammed by huge oversized vehicles (both pedestrians & drivers of smaller vehicles).

Most of the big improvements seem very similar between the brands. Wider track, longer wheelbase, total length unchanged. Better electronics as well. The Ranger does seem more work oriented with the wider bed, higher payload and towing features, but ends that thought by not offering a longbed extended cab. Overall, not bad.

I plan to buy a mid-sized truck within a year or less. Ford has a 7 speed manual transmission available with the 2.3 engine in the Bronco. If they had made this manual available in the new Ranger, with that same engine, I would very seriously consider buying a Ranger. As it is I expect to buy a Tacoma with manual tran.
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 3 ай бұрын
The only thing about that which gives me pause is how they derated and reduced the maximum rpm of the engine for that transmission. I’d love to know more about why and if there are any functional differences of the engine or if the transmission has any weak points which necessitated that.

Can't believe they removed the rear air vents and the rear bench isn't 60/40. Also would have been nice to have a flat space under the rear seats. The vertical screen doesn't look great. Would rather have a landscape screen and more buttons/storage under it.
@IamGroot786
@IamGroot786 3 ай бұрын
I agree. Not having a 60/40 split isn’t practical. What if you want to have at least one passenger back there? I also noticed that Ford might be making the same mistake that Honda initially made with the Ridgeline in having a very narrow opening of the rear doors. Hopefully it was just the angle of the camera.

Unfortunately, the 2024 model year 4X4 Ranger is 'Not flat towable behind a motorhome' or (neutral towable). That's a big loss for the motorhome flat towing segment. I flat tow a 2021 XLT and is an absolute pleasure to flat tow. Was looking forward to purchase a 2024, not now. 2019 thru 2023 are good.

Video quality aside, you go into your videos knowing more than these gentleman did and they work for Ford. That does not say much for their true investment in such an important generational upgrade to a midsize truck.

@Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk: Is Ranger a better value than the Maverick? Is it a better pickup? The styling seems conservative compared to other mid-size trucks. Can it compete with GM twins, Tacoma, Gladiator, and Frontier? It seems the best Ranger is the Raptor. At under $60k it seems to be a competitor to the ZR2 Bison and potentially Tacoma TRD Pro.

I think it's based on 2 things. Percentage wise long beds don't sell as well as short bed in the mid size segment. 2nd reason is Toyota is market leader for the size segment and Tacoma is their cash cow. For Chevy and Ford full size is their bread and butter. Mid size is more of an afterthought.

Can you ask them what "F-150 of the world" means? Clearly its built to meet standards globally, but what would or would not allow this to be classified as a 1/2 ton in the U.S.? Alternatively, what prevents the giant F150's from being a global platform? Is it cafe standards, size, configurability? Or is it a marketing buzz word with no background? They really need to provide more context.

F-150 is their bread and butter vehicle that is used for all kinds of things in the USA. In other countries it's the Ranger. Other countries don't get the F-150 or they are super expensive due to regulations in those countries.
@Pickuptrucktalk
@Pickuptrucktalk 3 ай бұрын
F-150 of the world is just trying to put it into perspective for U.S. based automotive journalists and truck fans. The weight of the Ranger makes it a mid-size truck. If it was heavier, it would be considered a full-size truck in the U.S. Globally, full-size trucks don’t sell at a high volume and the demand just isn’t there for the F-150 to be a global platform. CAFE is only a U.S. thing. In the overseas market, they drive a lot of what we would call mid-size trucks. They call them Utes and they do make them more of a work truck than the U.S. market offers. Just different needs for different customers.

With the Ranger you get three different engine options unlike with GM and Nissan and Toyota you get a 2.7 V6 unlike with GM Colorado and Canyon and Toyota you also get a 3.0 liter V6 unlike with the Canyon and Colorado and Toyota and you get the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder engine I can't stand the GM shifter placement and no headlight knob or dial which is stupid idiotic Ranger for the win for me
