The question isn't should you buy an apartment in LA but rather do you have the capital to buy and maintain an apartment in LA. Also, I would never suggest buying a house or apartment with a bf or gf because if something bad happens you are stuck.

Good points! Those are definitely things we considered as well - and regarding buying with an SO…you can always write contracts (but more importantly, take into account length of relationship / marriage commitment -- I wouldn't say "never" suggest, since everyone's situation is different!)

​@@catcertino If anything goes wrong selling it is an absolute nightmare. If one party doesn't want to sell it or has a vendetta there is absolutely nothing you can do.Renting a home and buying a home together is completely different.

But it's kinda average here in LA. My rent was 2k+ before covid 3 years ago, and my current mortgage is 4k+ per month. That's about the price you pay for decent location and amenities here. It's not even fancy or anything.

3k is normal and if you are looking to rent in a beach city that gets you an apt built in 1950-1979 with no washer and dryer, outdated kitchen from the 70s etc

Median house price in LA is over 1 mil, you could find a 700 sq feet house with a $4800 payment (and thats with 20% down) in a crappy area like Van Nuys or Reseda. The mortgage for a 1 br apt in decent areas in LA with 20% down is around $4,400. There is NOTHING to buy here with a 3k payment. Not even a studio as 500 sq ft studios are usually $550,000. A 1 br condo in a decent area is around $650k fyi. This is LA. For a house in the HOOD it'll be like 800k and you'll be paying 5k a month
