2024 Land Rover Defender 130 V8 Review: Too big? Too powerful? Too much??!!

The Land Rover Defender has been around forever and is a bonafide motoring icon steeped in heritage. Not much had changed on the Defender for a considerable period of time. And then the new Defender came along in 2019 and changed what the Defender was all about. Sure, it's as capable off road as ever, and there are plenty of rugged touches across the car, but it's now bigger and more luxurious than ever - every inch the modern JLR product. And it's proven to be very popular, with Defenders selling in huge numbers.
The Defender 130 is the biggest in the range, with the smaller 90 and 110 below it - both of which are relatively large cars. So, is this Land Rover Defender 130 with a whopping V8 all a step too far? Or just what you need when you want to fit lot of people, loads of equipment and head off absolutely anywhere you want? I love the new Defender, i was worried when i heard they was going to do a new version as the old one is a legend, but they did a really good job, and getting "too much" has never really been a bad thing in my experience. Id have one in a heart beat..

You shouldn't be bothered about how fast it goes, thats not what the Defender is all about, its a utility vehicle, a family bus, plodding around the country side, moving yourself around the farm...

A hundred grand?? For that? It looks terribly mis proportioned. He said that the underpinnings are the same as the next size down and they've basically grafted on an extra bit. Which is exactly how it looks. It makes the rear overhang look very odd and to me at least, it looks all wrong. Just think what else you could buy for that kind of money!

Have worked in mineral exploration most of my life and the new Defender would be totally useless. The old Defender was a very competent uncomfortable off roader. Those ridiculous wheels would not last very long.

An S-Class would also be useless in mineral exploration (whatever the fuck that is). Does that make it a bad car? Stop thinking the world fits completely in your tiny niche. Also, the wheels can be specced as low as 15”.

@@AladeenofWadiya1 only had it for couple of months but i must say it is a huge car & London roads are not exactly made for it lol. Very very comfy ,& very very thirsty . Here in the UK I've paid £140k for full on 130 & i do struggle to think why would anyone buy a Range Rover and not 130 Defender. Same full on LWB Range Rover would set you almost £230k. Also Defender looks way better than Range Rover
