I love my new GLE450e... I just took it on a long drive through the Kootenay mountain range in snow, slush, and dry conditions. It drove like a charm with all-season tires. It's great on fuel once you use up your electricity quota. I'm enjoying this a lot more than my BMW X3.

Thank you for this very helpful video! My wife was nervous about making the move from our Lexus RX-350 to the hybrid GLE450e, but your enthusiasm for the GLE helped me to get her to the Dealership. We came home this week with the GLE450e, Moonlight White and 21" AMG wheels with the AMG Exterior Package. 🙂 While we have only had this a few days, my wife is driving it as her daily driver to work, and she loves it. As you mention, much more power than you expect, Mercedes luxury, and the hybrid drive is a great bridge for those of us who are not ready to make the jump to pure EV. Your video made a difference, thank you for putting this together!

Just got mine. It's all as good as you say, but it's hard to describe how nicely this drives. I did not get the air suspension system and I don't think I lost out on anything. The advantage of the hybrid drive is that the car drives as economically around town as it does on the highway. At today's electric rates, the car costs about 17 cents a mile to drive on electric alone. At highway speed, running on gas at today's price, the cost is almost exactly the same. One note: Charging to 100% on 120vac takes well over 24 hours. You really really want a level 2 charger setup. The charger you get can do it, but you need to set up a 30 amp 240volt outlet for it.

Funny that my 2015 VW e-Golf has the same sized battery. Most people don’t realize that less than 100 miles range is just fine for regular daily driving missions. Hybrid a good combo here. There is no need to drive while conducting live hand eye coordination testing with a touch screen. Many people don’t like automatic HVAC and controlling these systems via a touchpad is unnecessary complication.

My new GLE 450e has a serious safety issue. Picked up my new 2024 GLE 450e with 8 miles on it on 6/26/24. Inspection at pickup was unremarkable. WIthin two hours, with 16 miles on it, the hood latch alarm activated. Visual inspection showed right side of hood was raised about 1/4 inch above fender. Drove directly to dealer, and service tech opened and closed hood, commenting on the light lever feel. Drove in parking lot with tech and the hood unlatched on its own. I now have a loaner, and the future of this car is yet to be determined. How did this car pass inspections at the factory and at the dealer?

Unless you really really didn’t want to purchase a Range Rover (new-cost, CPO-reliability + depreciation)..which is understandable… this Mercedes-Benz would be on my short list… and nothing else. As an X5 PHEV owner, the only two things I like about the GLE PHEV is, the DC fast charging, surely helps in long trips to top up the EV range than hauling around a dead battery! Second for sure is the rear seat leg room. The X5 leg room while sufficient is barely bigger than a midsize CUV. Sedans like Accord and Camry have way more rear leg room. Not sure how BMW screwed up the rear leg room. But in all other aspects, the BMW outclasses this Benz easily.

BMW X5 50e looks horribly cheap compared to this car, the unattached screen really looks like work in progress and the climate controls are really a step back. But the real reason this car wins is because it provides you up to 62 mi of range while the BMW is 44 at best. It makes a lot of difference in the PHEV world.

I'm on the fence! But not about the X5 vs GLE, but rather the GLE450e vs my GLE300d! I love the thought of driving around town each day and using NO GAS. I'd only be using gas on longer trips. The problem is, i take a lot of longer trips, and my GLE300d (diesel) has the same 2.0 4 cylinder engine, but using diesel and my 24.4 gal tank, I get nearly 700 miles on a highway trip! I can actually travel from Idaho to California and AVOID buying high priced diesel in California, filling up in Nevada with prices similar to Idaho.

Zack, regen braking like you like, no anchors out. Wouldn't that work like my Volvo, modulate the regen - infinitely variable - with the gas pedal? Bill in Pa.

I have the '22 XC60 T8 ER; its weakness in the drivetrain is the electric motor powering the rear-axle only (and the ICE powering the front axle only). In practice, in all-electric mode, my rear wheels spin a LOT, even on dry pavement, when jumping out from a stop sign into fast traffic while turning left or right. The GLE 450e (and Cayenne E-Hybrid) do it properly, with AWD in all-electric.

What is the warranty for the high voltage battery? I heard it is 6 year/60K miles. That makes me concern on the battery longevity. Replacing the battery can be very costly and could take back any savings on gas $. (Updated: confirmed with MB NA, the high voltage battery warranty is 6 years/62K miles, whichever comes first. The extended warranty in some States are 10-years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. A list of those states are as follows: CA, CO, CT, MA, MD, ME, NJ, NY, OR, RI and VT)

@panameradan6860
@panameradan6860 Жыл бұрын
As a '22 XC60 T8 owner, I'd say the GLE 450e (even though it's much uglier and likely less reliable) for these reasons: (1) AWD in electric-only driving (the Volvos are RWD only in electric-only mode); (2) physical toggle switches for climate control and for drive-mode controls (both lacking in the Volvos, which have them awkwardly in the touchscreen only); (3) much better all-electric range (GLE 450e gets 68 miles of range in stop-and-go driving, whereas my XC60 gets only 40 miles max); (4) ability to DC-fast-charge; (5) track pad that's well designed and means you don't need to touch the touchscreen at all (or hardly ever); (6) much-better-designed instrument screen and infotainment screen, with much more information of use to the drive (Volvo gets a "D" or "F" grade on both screens); (7) three USB-C ports that can be used to access the infotainment screen (the Volvos have only one); (8) dual sun visors on each side (the Volvos only have single sun visors); (9) little to no shiny "piano-black" surfaces. The Volvos do some things better than the GLE 450e (like all-out one-pedal driving, and ability to ICE-charge the traction battery, and better rearward visibility -- and up to three years of free maintenance, where MB gives zero).

Thank you for comparing the GLE 450e to the Cayenne E-Hybrid. In my book, the X5 xDrive e50 isn't an apt comparison because of its climate controls being only in the touchscreen, and its all-electric range may be less than that of the 2024 e-Hybrid (until I see Kyle Conner or somebody equally reliable do a range test on the X5 e50). The 450e is about $20k-$25k USD less as how I'd option it vs. how I'd option the Cayenne E-Hybrid (both lightly compared to any dealership). I'll further add that I think that the XC60 T8 PHEV (or the XC90 T8 PHEV) is a more apt comparison to the GLE 450e than is the X5.

Forget the heated steering wheel. In the US the Burmeister sound system is an option! WTF? I will also add that the Mercedes salespeople I've encountered are embarrasingly unfamiliar with this model. They originally offered me complimentary charging for 30 minutes a day on Charge America. After hours and hours of trying to get the option to work, I had to speak to someone at corporate to find out that this perk only applies to fully electric models. Why would they even offer it if it didn't apply? Aside from that, I really love the vehicle and have only filled the tank twice in 1600 miles of driving. Just do your homework, it seems "customer service" is a lost art in America these days.

Pure Luxury? ChatGPT: The issue with the rear-facing camera on Mercedes GLE450e models (2023-2025) entering a continuous calibration loop is indeed a known problem among owners. This issue primarily arises when the camera fails to complete its calibration after the vehicle is started, causing it to repeatedly deploy and retract, which can be both frustrating and lead to premature mechanical wear. Mercedes has addressed this issue to some extent by issuing a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) advising service departments not to attempt repairs, as they currently consider the cycling a normal function. However, owners have voiced complaints about the camera’s cycling being disruptive, and there's growing frustration in online forums where Mercedes has yet to offer a long-term fix. This is particularly problematic since frequent cycling could lead to the camera mechanism wearing out faster than intended

Maybe in South Florida where you have to travel a ways to get to what's traditionally thought of as "cold country." Living in desert Arizona in the Phoenix area, driving 2 hours north can get as cold and snowy as anywhere in the lower 48 and many parts of Canada. Everyone I know buying a new vehicle in the near-luxury- through-luxury class (and most in lesser-class vehicles) not only wants but expects heated seats and heated steering wheel (AND cooled seats, of course)...especially for the kind of money they're asking for these vehicles. A colleague who was a former manager at a local BMW dealer said people were always getting on their case, sometimes incensed, when heated seats and steering wheels weren't standard. Even if primarily just a desert dweller, chill is relative, what may be balmy for someone from Calgary can be freezing for a flatlander in palm tree and cactus country! The use of the phrase "cold desert nights" in literature over the years is not for nothing, and many locals travel regularly to different climes anyway, whether for family, business or recreating. Not only that, but in this class, better resale (marketing a vehicle then is not so region-dependent). Many if not most folk I know who drive a vehicle equipped with heated seats and steering wheel use those features, especially on chilly mornings. That said, what might be a jacket or sweater morning here can often become golf shirt weather by early afternoon, so heated seats usually get turned off by then. But...at least they're there!

Although I love PHEV, its the worse performing when it comes to reliability. Even worse than the overrated and overhyped pure EV. That's according to today's CR annual finding. That's along with Mercedes's recent reliability record. As with all German cars, I would definitely lease the hell out of it. But when I think of if it again. If I can afford to lease a proper Mercedes for 3 years, I would just lease an AMG instead. Haha.

The CR report clumped all PHEVs into the same category. Chrysler Pacifica PHEV was rated the worst of any car. They talked about how that dragged down all PHEVs.

 @panameradan6860 - Yes, I picked up the GLE 450e in Mid- November. I'm usually driving at 60-65mph these days and I feel the battery goes down too fast. I also watched the Out of Spec Reviews video and I don't know how he was able to get 68 miles range for the battery.

Drove one of these. Drive can’t compare to a BMW x5. The Mercedes just drove harder and engine noise sounded like an old VW Bug. Not impressed, even with all the tech which seems to be what’s important to Mercedes these days.

The amount of features you don't get as standards with the brand baffles my mind. No standard heated steering wheel, heated second row, HUD, massaging seats, cooled seats, decent leather seats, steel pedals, panoramic sunroof, acoustic glass, modern safety features, good suspension... and dealerships know that most buyers won't realize these things are missing - all they see is the badge. Styling is beyond boring too. PASS.

You both look cramped in those seats. I need more hip room so I'd pass on this. Grand Highlander Hybrid Platinums have more space, 32/36 mpg and about the same price.

Well this all sounds great but the claimed 50miles range on battery is a total myth - I have driven one and you are more likely to get 30 miles maybe. That is if you drive at 50 miles/hr and don't use AC or heater or play a radio etc., as usual the claimed battery range is mythology. In addition the 4 cylinder engine is noisy as it underpowered. Dont be fooled by this marketing!!

Check out Kyle Conner's range-test KZbin video... The GLE 450e got 58 miles of all-electric range at 70 mph sustained, and got 68 miles of all-electric range when driving < 40 mph (i.e., typical commuting traffic where EV driving is most useful). I have done seven test-drives of 5 or 6 different GLE 450e vehicles in the last three weeks as a result of Conner's reporting, and I can confirm that the range is at least 60 miles in stop-and-go driving. No argument about the ICE being noisy and lethargic, but frankly it's probably adequate for the PHEV drivetrain overall. Of more concern is the infamous Mercedes-Benz unreliability.

Well it’s a poor review overall, more like a specification walk through ! And this is no match to the X5 45 e or the newer 50e. Luxury and 4 cyl don’t mesh and I have a great experience having gone through the mistake once! BMW pulled out their 40e which had Turbo 4 for a reason. You guys both need to do some better homework than gloss over.

@@panameradan6860- Lol 😂, dude you are preaching to the choir! I owned the Volvo and moved to X5, would say the Volvo was bad at all, but the BMW PHEV is a different class. The EV and AWD works through the main transmission drive train. My comment was on a $100K vehicle why a 4 Cyl? You drive this one and 50e and tell us your real experience.

Generally, people who purchase these vehicles, don’t drive them like the typical Lexus owner. The Lexus owner keeps their vehicles for a long time. The BMW/Mercedes driver is not looking to keep a damn car for 10 years. The warranty period is just fine for these drivers.

I can’t stand these “depreciating” comments on every luxury vehicle video. Generally, the people that can actually afford these vehicles, are financially secure. For example, I drive a BMW X7 (2023), while retirement is fully funded, emergency fund intact, savings for the kids…and I don’t give a damn about the depreciation hit. I’ll buy a new one when I’m bored with this one in about 3 years.
