Picture this... the military is funded by taxes. Our paychecks come from those military funds. Our paychecks are also taxed... thus in turn, we're paying our own paychecks... we should be tax exempt 🤷‍♂️

Picture this, all of us pay Social Security tax and when you get old enough to draw it you get taxed on the taxes you already paid…… Also you get hit on the Military retirement pay…… Seems our tax system is a tad greedy, oh wait thats the political leaders that forgot who they work for.

I joined the army at 29, I turn 30 March 11, 2024. My ship date is 2/20/24. I am an E-2 rank thanks to my recruiter for taking the 9 courses in Future Soldier program. For those saying that military pay sucks, I disagree. My last job was a Sales Manager in Marietta, GA. I made $3,500/monthly after taxes. My bills monthly total were $3,200 leaving me with only $300/month. I have NO KIDS or pets and live in "safe neighborhood in Georgia, 1 bedroom apartment with security camera for extra protection). Now fast forward, got rid of my car because I wont need it, my total bills in the military will be $191 so I can save way more money, finish my degree, and get a house after I get out. Please dont let people fool you into thinking the pay sucks when you literally have little to no bills (Single soldiers). Different if you have a family.

Exactly. Military pay goes way farther than civilian wages for exactly everything you said. Uncle Sam pays for you living expenses so the average service member can pocket 75%+ of their salary and save it or invest it. The same can’t be said about a civilian wage. That $55k may sound decent but after paying the bills and putting food on the table you’re lucky if you even have $500 left at the end of the month

The military is best if you’re like 28+ and the chances of you retiring or owning a house is slim to none because the best you can do in the job market is land a job where the peak salary is $5-$10 above minimum wage, you’re better off joining the military. Become an army plumber or a navy engineman, do your 20 years and then retire at 53 with a house to come home to somewhere in middle America

Money matters, but so does having a plan. I come from a long line of both military veterans and blue-collar workers. I grew up in a trailer park with a working mom and a stepdad who made minimum wage as a security guard. My plan isn't perfect, but I used my 21 years in to become the first in my family to earn a four-year degree, buy a house (using the GI Bill), and generally take advantage of everything the Army has to offer. I don't make a lot of money in my civilian job but have a resume that could double or maybe even triple my pay. I get my pension as an E-7, 100% disability, and live a quiet life that I never dreamed of having when I was a brash young Private simply waiting for the next paycheck to hit. Of my five kids, two are adults finding their own paths in life and being as successful as they can these days, while the other three are teenagers about to embark on their next journeys within a few years.

@@tpro106 just go to college and do ROTC. Sign a contract as soon as possible for your branch's ROTC of choice and have college on Uncle Sam's dollar. Each branch has a different vibe to it and you need to see what your ambitions first before you pick a branch. I picked the Army for it's availability and because I wanted to see the world, and I myself will do ROTC to commission. If you really feel you must enlist, study hard for the ASVAB and get at least 110 GT and excel in school otherwise. You can do Green to Gold and comission that way too. Your time in college counts for Active Duty, which can be put towards your 20 if you want to do that. Or just do normal college then go to OCS. Just bear in mind, when giving MOSs for Officers, unlike Enlisted, MOSs aren't guaranteed (at least for the army). You can't walk up to the recruiter and request 35A the same way you can request 35F. Any which way, you have to compete for your MOS. For the Army, West Point gets it first, then ROTC, then OCS. I'm not sure about the other branches. But officer life IS better and I'd recommend it over enlisting. Only way I'd reccomend enlisting is if you don't want to deal with officer politics and drama, and if you want less responsibility.

@@christopherchaos To elaborate on the system a little, anytime you are on temporary duty (including training), deployed, or even on transition leave, you'll continue to receive BAH for your original duty station or home of record. In 2005, I came down on orders to Korea due to my PCS date not being updated. I was willing to go, since I'd been on station in DC for only eight months, meaning my one-year unaccompanied tour in Korea would have seen over $20k in BAH alone while I lived in the barracks and my wife and kids stayed with family. Those orders were cancelled, but when I found myself with about five months of retirement leave in 2022, incidentally stationed back in the National Capital Region, I moved back to the home I purchased much further South and pocketed about $6k over what I would have had I been stationed down here (nearly $15k vs. $9k).

depends, usually if your stationed somewhere in the U.S. your BAH is given as a flat rate amount for your area and you can use that to get housing at or under said amount. its your choice to get a house that meets the amount given but if you choose to live somewhere that costs less than the total BAH amount, your able to pocket the rest of the amount left over. im stationed overseas and usually its not the same as BAH in the U.S., you are given a flat rate amount that you can use based on the area your stationed at but you can only receive the exact amount of what the house costs. therefore you wont be able to pocket any of the leftover amount given to you. basically BAH is alot better if your stationed somewhere in the U.S. than it is overseas. hopefully that answered your question.

Is there any extra money if you have children as well as a spouse?
@anonymousm9113
@anonymousm9113 Ай бұрын
No, the only extra money you get is from your housing allowance (BAH), either with or without dependents. It's based on expected housing needs based on rank, so it can be a bit unbalanced. For example, I had two kids when I joined as an E-1, but my BAH was based on me needing only a small apartment for a wife and [maybe] infant. A 35-year-old MAJ with a spouse but no children would be expected to live in a much larger house. Looking at my current area, an E-1 would get $1600 while an O-4 would get $2300, regardless of the number of children they have.

How can you qualify for BAH if you’re single?
@christopherchaos
@christopherchaos 5 ай бұрын
In the Army it would usually be if you are an officer or E7 and above. In some cases if the barracks are over full but they will give the BAH to the higher ranking soldiers in the barracks first.
@ericg1149
@ericg1149 2 ай бұрын
Depends on rank and housing availability. Most duty locations E5 and below live in the barracks, and if you live on base housing, they take all your BAH. You would have to get a statement of nonavailabilty (no space for you to live on post).

I'm glad to see that military pay is still a joke. Your hourly rate is way off. Who works 8 hours a day in the military. Try using a real average workday. It breaks down to a realistic hourly rate of around 4.00 an hour. If the military had to pay overtime, a lot of the hurry up and wait would disappear fast.

Voters should think carefully about how their military should be structured. Let's face it, governments can make some silly decisions about sending it's soldiers off to war. For example, some people are patriots who would gladly give their lives to DEFEND their own country, but overseas deployment? Not so much. So the most common situation is that you sign up, and that is a blank check you give to the government to do anything with your body for any reason, so you might end up as a body-bag or a cripple. But it does not have to be that black and white. For example, during WW2 in the South African Army, you could have the option of being "Red-Tabbed". [it means you volunteer for overseas service]. This was because the bulk of European South Africans were either of British or Boer heritage. The "Brits" wanted to fight on Britain's side, but the Boers [Dutch] did not, most of them feeling more aligned with Germany. The Australian Army has had similar schemes. If you joined the regular army, you would have to serve anywhere, but if you were in the Citizen's Military Forces [like the US National Guard], or reserve, you had to serve on Australian territory, but were not required to serve overseas. As New Guinea was part of Australian territory back in WW2, a lot of Australian militia [CMF] found themselves in N.G or Timor, because the regular army divisions were serving in North Africa or Malaya/Singapore! At the end of the day, you have to give a volunteer soldier the option of what hill to die on. For example, most who served in Vietnam [US, ANZAC's, etc] didn't think that they should have been there, and that their government's badly miscalculated. In World War One Australia had a population of only 4+ million people. 416,809 enlisted, all volunteers. That was 38.7 per cent of the total male population aged between 18 and 44. [They died for God King and Country, but some were just adventurers]. Of these, an estimated 58,961 died, 166,811 were wounded, 4098 went missing or were made prisoners of war, and 87,865 suffered sickness. Australia maintained five large infantry divisions and a mounted division [with some New Zealanders] overseas and in combat. Infantry battalions with a TOE of over 1000 soldiers could come back from a single battle in a single day with massive casualties, particularly in France. Lots of KIA, WIA, Sick [trench warfare was not healthy] , and a few POWs and MIA. Perhaps only a hundred men left standing. WW2 was much the same, but with some conscription. over 700,00 served in green from a total population of 7 million. Australia lost 34,000 service personnel during World War II. Total battle casualties were 72,814. Over 31,000 Australian became prisoners-of-war. Of these more than 22,000 were captured by the Japanese; by August 1945 over one third of them had died in the appalling conditions of the prisoner-of-war camps. Most of the POWs were captured in Singapore. But by the beginning of the "hot" war in Vietnam, Australia could only deploy a weak brigade, and only with the use of conscripts. So deployment went from a single infantry battalion battle group [with a few guns and some light armour] in 1965, to a 3 battalion task force with modest armour, helo, engineer, sigs, med, logistics, etc, in 1968. And today some of the short-fall in bodies is being made up with technology of all types and drones. Every soldier, sailor etc is valuable. So no matter what your politics, quality national leadership is important. Perhaps if leaders had fewer "toys" [ie people in "green"] to deploy overseas, they might make better decisions about who and where to fight. So this is a valid question to ask of your politician or armed forces recruiter. You are OK with dying for your country [if necessary], but YOU, not them, get to choose where. Despite the claims of religion, the only life you are absolutely sure of, is the one you are experiencing right now. All that said, as an old soldier, I say go for it, but with your eyes wide open. The military will make you the best you can be.
