Translation State was a good story that got hijacked by the author using a sledgehammer to make sure her thematic message took the limelight. That alone turned it from good/great to so-so in my mind.

I loved Translation State and also really enjoyed The Water Outlaws and The Terraformers (which grew on me a lot after finishing it! Some of the characters are so endearing!)

Ancillary Justice is also in my queue, but man is getting deep after the survey. Regarding Latin, while we can never be completely certain, there is a decent likelihood that we are close due to primary sources, alternate spellings, and the Catholic Church maintaining it over millennia. There certainly is an established pronunciation of common phrases as Cody mentioned. It was a sad day when I learned that the letter V in Latin is pronounced like a W. Caesar’s “I came, I saw, I conquered” just doesn’t sound as bad ass with the soft W instead of the hard V. Ha - there’s another one for you, Brent. I don’t understand the fascination with All Systems Red.

Am comparing Brokenearth, Earthsea. To Saint of Bright Doors and Witch King. I like them almost equal but the latter is seen neater as is/are newer of the future sort thing.

I like dio and that means god in italian. The use of deus is alright took a bit though to find zeu and ra mean god in other realms or systems. Anyway very interesting video wonder who will win nebula novels this year 2024

I love cousin Ivan! Although honestly maybe I need to read more Vorkosigan books, all the ones I've read he was pretty reliably dull to average. Was he uncharacteristically brilliant in some books?
