Yeah, Supertruck 2 is in our opinion the best product of the manufacturer and it is worth looking forward to, although the comparison of an electric truck with a hybrid is quite strange but it will show that the future trend will be chosen, electric trucks are still the top to maintain the air ! Is the Volvo truck fully electric? or is it a hybrid? the person talking keeps say Hybrid. If this is a hybrid then this comparison is worth nothing as the Volvo is not a FULL Electric truck like the Tesla Semi Truck.

You're right, the comparison is quite unreasonable, but the purpose of our comparison is only to evaluate the performance and development if they have such operating parameters, without wanting to favor any truck. As you can see, we have acknowledged a few aspects where the SPT 2 is superior to the rig. Thank you for your contribution

Scania has made quite a lot of investments and commitments to producing electric heavy trucks. However, the company has recently complained about the slow support from the EU and various countries related to charging infrastructure, and tougher regulations promoting electric trucks. At the moment, Volvo is the market leader in providing various trucks that are specifically designed electric, or where the purchaser can choose the driveline. There is a "design your truck" on the web site and adapted to the respective market globally.

The big problem with your calculation is the assumption that electricity prices will remain at 11 c/kwh but this is unlikely as more EVs are sold and the grid and back up costs for renewables increase - in Germany with a large renewable power supply the current costs is 33 c/kwh and they still have to build out over 3000 km of grid to allow the current renewable power to be transported to where the industry is, and this is before there is any significant switch in power by industry and domestic markets to electricity. To these costs we have to add the build out of a truck charging network for trucks other than Tesla. In the UK JCB the heavy construction and farm equipment machine manufacturer has modified its diesel engines to run on hydrogen and Volvo can do the same with this hybrid truck. This points to hydrogen power not batteries being the future of transport, especially in Europe where countries like the UK are moving to replace its natural gas grid with hydrogen from steam reforming of the displaced methane, burying the produced CO2 in depleted North Sea oil and gas wells though it can also produce it by hydrolysis using surplus power from the small modular nuclear reactors being built by Rolls Royce and its German and Indian partners that are to be deployed near major towns and industries from 2030 and so not need an extended grid system. This looks like a repeat of the early electric vehicle market that was destroyed by Ford and Diesel.

Big problem with your calculations is you assume oil prices won't go up as they use more expensive technology is required to extract deeper wells and demand of fuel goes up as China and India develop to use as much fuel per capita as their western counterparts despite their lack of oil production. Electrical infastructure will be needed to be upgraded anyways, kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

The Volvo Supertruck 2 is a "concept" not a commercially available vehicle. The Tesla Semi has been produced for 1 year, at low volumes. If Volvo could manufacture trucks that achieved 12 mpg that cost $150k, they would make a killing.

Cost of ownership when comparing with any electric vehicle must include the battery service life replacement cost vs diesel engine service life over 5 and 10 years. It is never just cost of operation day to day, or even year to year. That huge battery replacement cost is a killer! Learnedthat on my 1st and only Honda Civic Hybrid. In all, the operations saving from batteries was lost at end of battery service life. Would have been cheaper to stay conventional gas if keeping vehicle 10 years or more.

With battery the maintenance is not charging ot when it's too cold or too hot, as for usage, you dint measure in years since it's more likely a component in the battery will fail rather then the cells degrade out of usability, they currently degrade at 10% every 200,000 miles, newer slighly less energy density batteries tesla uses In their cars are 3x more durable than this and may switch to them in the future, if you drive 200,000 miles in this truck. The fuel savings should be enough to replace the battery which around half the cost of the truck. So EVs are good for running to a high milage despite range not being very high, even police station are buying teslas that cost 30% more than their regular patrol cars because the maintenance and fuel pays for itself in about 2 years.

Regulations are very different in different countries. One truck from one manufacturer may be the better option in one country but not a valid option in another country. As an example, the total length may be up to about 35 m in some countries like Finland and Sweden, and more than 70 metric tonnes. Also, the range in km is typically related to breaks a driver has to take

As much as I am for progress, I am much more into the Volvo than the Tesla. I believe the trucking industry has better chances of going hybrid than full electric. Reason range and charging infrastructure.

Tesla Semi is the only option for companies who want to compete in truck drag races but for companies who want to ship freight economically and reliably, it is not such a great choice.

It is, PepsiCo bought multiple EV trucks, the tesla semi truck is among the most capable electric semi and one with some of the highest efficiency, the drive train it uses mostly comes from their drag racing sedan but since the motors spin up to 20k RPM single gear with only 10% torque loss they make some of the best semi truck motors and they want to show it off.

The Volvo supertruck 2 is precisely a hybrid truck and as we have explained it operates mainly on diesel while the electric motor plays only a small role. We also admit that it is superior to the Tesla Semi in some aspects, but at any rate, the electric truck is still much more popular because it has the potential to go further in the future. We can increase the grid as much as we want. There’s no limit of the size of the grid. Tesla Energy is leading that challenge. Tesla Energy division will actually generate more revenue annually than Tesla Auto will after they achieve their goal of manufacturing 20 million cars per year.
