Tesla should be building trailer installed batteries. Trucks don't always sit overnight while they are unloaded. Many drop off a trailer, pick up a new trailer, and then hit the road again. Trailers could also have a few thousand watts of solar panels of the roof for bonus charging or untethered yard charging.
@100pyatt
@100pyatt 11 ай бұрын
This is actually a genius idea and logical from the industry standpoint. Trailers should be the big fuel reserve for the tractor unit and recharging with solar on the roof while they're sitting at shippers and receivers... Even plugging into SHORE POWER at the Docks !! 🏆🏆🏆✅

@@100pyatt this may work for short haul, noting the weight penalty of putting a heavy battery under a trailer, however this will not work for long haul unless the battery can be swapped out.

Big question. Does Tesla have to tell SEC and the public, when they activate the big 5Billion $ buyback programme, or could it come suddenly in jan 23? No one wants to miss this opportunity of the decade, and I bet Elon will release all the hidden upsides(not difficult as there are many he hasn’t mentioned yet), making the rebound speedy. I wouldn’t like to miss such an opportunity to make such a shit load of money I’m thinking about $500,000 dollars with a substantial capital waiting for the right time because it’ll be a shame to loose such an amount of money especially in the current economic climes

The decay raye is related to the impurities in the fuel & oxidizer. In a closed-cycle they remain pure and the Fuel Cell has near infinite lifespan. In a polluted environment it slowly destroys the Fuel Cell with those contaminants. So one could use a FC like a battery and it would be just as long lasting.

Hmmm. You DO realize that there's not enough power available to charge on a MEGAWATT scale, right? You also know that at least 3 companies produce and store cryogenics, right? And they have shops ALL OVER THE COUNTRY? So there's far more available infrastructure for hydrogen than there is power for charging. Oh, as to the dangers of hydrogen...it can be put out with ABC extinguishers. Lithium battery fires don't get put out. They burn until all the batteries are consumed, and they poison and burn down most everything around them. Hydrogen makes...water. With the weakening of the grid and drops in power due to wind and solar installation, that disparity is only going to get worse.

I hear you can make a small fortune in hydrogen - as long as you start with a large fortune! If you just look at the advancements and adoption in EV's compared to fool cells, it is hard to imagine hydrogen ever gaining traction. They started to build a hydrogen station where I live, got half way through, and stopped and now is inhabited by cobwebs and tumbleweeds. I think there are a few Toyota Murai boat anchors for sale if anyone is interested.

Fuel Cells might be a good idea in a slow process e.g. German PICEA system from Berlin to convert PV power into hydrogen and store in standard low pressure bottles used worldwide. So in June/July in central Europe and with around 25 square meters PV you have enough energy for cold winter! But the truck experiment in Switzerland shows even that hydrogen from excess energy is rubbish as well as the companies involved believe in this technology. The only chance I would see for Methanol Fuel Cells e.g. Aiways/Gumpert. But BEV will always beat hydrogen in TCO and well to wheel considerations! Fuel cells need intensive servicing and the system is by far complexer than a Tesla Semi! Only advantage of the Hyundai hydrogen is the cab design for Europe! We have more narrow roads over here where we cannot use US trucks for more than show purposes.

Latest studies show that Hydrogen released to atmosphere destroys hydroxide ions in upper atmosphere which are the normal scavengers of methane, a significant greenhouse gas. Accordingly it has been shown that released hydrogen increases methane in atmosphere half as much as gasoline car (assume diesel truck). Because hydrogen is hard to contain it is estimated that up to 10% of hydrogen chain is released.

Toyota is still pushing their Mirai in California. Actually a nice car now (previous years were ugly). Base model lists for $52k. Toyota sells about 3,000 per year and starting in 2021 they figured out how to sell this many. Fed tax break $8k, Cali incentive $5k, Toyota discount $20k, so the $52k car effectively costs $19k and because H2 fuel is so expensive, they throw in 6 years of free fuel. Oh, I forgot to mention that H2 cars get 4 CARB credits vs 3 for BEVs and selling these cars saves Toyota a bundle on not having to pay CARB fines for their other vehicles. I'm sure Toyota also gets incentives from their Japanese government, so all in all they probably don't loose too much money on these cars.

When I was at UCLA in the 1970s, the Engineering school built a hydrogen car for research purposes. It worked great. The two biggest problems that the professor in charge said were: - the safety of filling (which can be dealt with easily in a commercial vehicle) - what would happen if the pressure vessel was punctured in an accident. There is a highly likely scenario that in a violent crash that punctured the pressure vessel would result in a low order explosion that would vaporize anything combustible within a a city block and melt many metals (think small scale Hindenberg). These risks have kept hydrogen motors to mostly high performance rockets like the Saturn 5.

There are actually *additional* incentives for electric semis in Nevada under the new bill. $175k is the BASELINE savings for a Class 8 truck. Independent operators get an additional 33%, and disadvantaged groups like veterans get an additional 5%. If the incentives stack like the way the bill seems to imply, a veteran starting their own shipping business would save $241,500 off the $250k price tag, bringing the total cost BELOW $10k (less than the price of a used car)... and that's excluding any federal incentives. It could end up being practically FREE under the right circumstances.

Perhaps if you can make friends with a large trucking company. Even leave a cargo room for smaller deliveries and free charging (it if lines up with travel plans.. conditions etc). I could see someone doing it for the lifestyle and income. Or just doing it as a pure camper. Rent them out when not using for high rates. Make custom trailers to order, kits for cab conversion. There is an Australian company converting your old Semi to Electric but the best part is that it has swappable Batteries. So a Forklift comes takes out your battery and puts in a fresh one in 5 minutes. And they are already laying out the Stations along the main roads used. Semi's in Australia have to stop around 4 hours to curb Driver Fatigue so this is within the range of the Batteries.

Fully loaded Tesla semi at 82000 lbs gets 21 MPG -ish... The unloaded KIA Sorrento that I sometimes drive gets similar efficiency in mixed driving, 24mpg if mainly highway... In pure city driving, lots of traffic, I once used 3/4 of a tank in about 9 miles of driving!!! Just me and one passenger, no other load... In stop and go traffic, EVs get near infinite range it seems...

That 3/4 of a tank in the Kia would usually take you several hundred miles, eh? How do you go through that in 9 miles?? Were you in traffic for 6 hours? Lots of people in cars with less fuel in the tank would have been running out, eh?

I'd have to take exception to your claim of Evs getting near infinite range. I own a Model 3 Tesla I bought earlier this year. 17,126 miles so far. The car averages 240WH/mile since new. If I drive it slower in warm weather in fairly flat terrain it gets around 180WH/mile. If I drive it like mad Max I might see 350WH/mile. The point I'm trying to make is this, while EVs definitely are more efficient than ICE vehicles, They are also susceptible to efficiency fluctuations based on driving behavior just as ICE vehicles are.

Not yet. Current design is for short haul. For example Pepsi delivering from distribution centres to retail centres. Arguably there is enough room, but this is not the current design intention. They currently have a 500 mile range. At 70mph that would be just over a risky 7 hours without a refill. Assuming the semi is doing short haul this mean no semi charging points are needed

It is not really a viable option. Compared to new semi's the Tesla does not get as good of fuel mileage as the new semi's get. With current fuel prices it is cheaper to run and diesel truck. Diesel would need to be around $9 a gallon for the Tesla to be even. It is not cheap to charge an electric car at a public station.

I agree! Hydrogen could have been the way to go but they didn’t want to risk backing and opec and the government getting upset with them. So they took it slow. Not realizing that selling the vehicles would drive the development of the surrounding technology. Selling the vehicles would build the infrastructure. Now we have 20 years of battery development. All the brains in the MIT’s of the world have turned their power toward battery density and dendrite issues. All of them being solved little by little every week. Hydrogen won’t catch up because so many less people are trying to make it work. Filling speed and longevity and environmental impact will very soon be uncatchable.

Yeah I see that. I was thinking more of the infrastructure as well as the Tec. Much of the early anti EV movement was about how there just wasn’t any chargers anywhere. Seemed to me like as enough of the cars appeared and as cool as they seemed. More people wanted them and Tesla had the money and the backing to place the chargers. Compelling products just convince people. I did see something about the compressed hydrogen solid discs. But no solid hydrogen solution will ever match liquid hydrogen for compression. A tank of Liquid H is as much energy as it will ever contain to be burned. The things to work on would be the engines or ( and this has been seen in sci fi for years ) some way of getting the hydrogen on the go. Some fusion machine that sucks it right out of the air or a tank of water. But I’m guessing that’s centuries away.

Converting electricity into hydrogen and back again is less efficient and more expensive than simply storing it in batteries. Plus, we already have the EV infrastructure in place, making EV's a more compelling option.

@@Martin-se3ij I looked into this. A laughable scam. A prancing popinjay selling snake-oil. The reality of that is you will need the weight of an EV battery to absorb the hydrogen( roughly) to go a similar distance. With a disputable H2 storage mechanism " stores hydrogen straight from the smoke stack", to a complex retrieval mechanism - heating the metal hydride to release the hydrogen (make sure your LASER isn't too hot), while spinning the disc ( or passing the tape) over the LASER. It was a neat Lab experiment, and got funding. But the website was woefully lacking in detail. It has SCAM written all over it. But the Fossil Fuel industry, and their lobbyists, love this kind of thing, 'cos they can keep "the dream" of a hydrogen economy alive - even if it makes zero sense. Physics and Chemistry take no prisoners in this world, and hydrogen will forever be the Ugly Sister compared to the ever-improving battery chemistry, technology and production economics. "Hydrogen goes bye-byes !"

Doesn’t hydrogen production use a larger amount of energy as than hydrogen yields? As long as it’s green it’d be ok but it adds up one more step. It might suit longer range flights. But sill more engineering problems, the enery density of hydrogen vs jet fuels and weight of the (very) high pressure hydrogen tanks. Most likely possible if modified enough. Nothing’s easy.

If you do a little math you will find that a Tesla Semi will require the electric use of 500 average homes if it can charge in an hour, 5 hours would still be like adding 100 homes to the grid. I can't see it , the grid would have to grow exponentially or it's brownouts constantly.

I really don't know how it works in the US. But in Europe truck drivers are allowed to work X hours ( work is inclusive traffic jams ) and then they have to rest for X hours. During resting, you can charge your Semi truck. In Germany, it is even worse, truck can not drive on Sundays. So for the time matrix, the semi will fit perfectly in Europe. PS it is a pity you do not use the metric system.

Hydrogen fuel for cars is the useless technology that won't die. This video does an excellent job of explaining why it is useless but it doesn't explain why it hasn't disappeared before now. I don't know what the explanation is but here's a few thoughts: 1. Hydrogen seems to constitute a kind of religion for some people. Every pro hydrogen video gets a bunch of comments about how the battery electric vehicles aren't going to work, so the future is hydrogen. 2. Cynical ICE car manufacturers who secretly push hydrogen powered cars with the hope of getting government handouts to develop hydrogen cars that will sell with more government subsidies Maybe, fossil fuel companies are in the this mix as well. Fossil fuel company skills and infrastructure are much better positioned to take advantage of a shift to hydrogen than a shift to BEV.s 3. Toyota weirdness: Why does a company this successful continue to pursue an idea this stupid?
