I did a 1,700 mile trip last Summer in a 22 BRZ but with Falken FK460 tires and loved it. Same on a recent 400 mile outing.

They should just get rid of the Supra and give us the GR86 turbo trim level with 300+ hp

Thanks for watching. The Supra is a little bit of a strange beast but it’s a major step up in price and performance. To your point Toyota does have that epic 3 cylinder turbo in the GRCorolla. The 86 was designed around that flat boxer and it is very good. Great combo of weight and power. Thanks again for watching and happy motoring.

@@BeyondTheTestDrive The Supra is a dead car walking. BMW is stopping production of the Z4 after the 2026 model year and since the Supra is built at the same plant , it will end at the same time (which probably means none built after 2025). FWIW, the competition version of the GR86 uses the 3-cylinder. So Toyota does know how to fit that engine in the car. I have also read that the 3 cylinder with turbo is about 100 pounds lighter, so it would reduce overall weight a bit and specifically take weight out of the front end of the car.

NAH, the GR86 needs to stay naturally aspirated.

I really like the GR86, but wanted something a little more substantial with more power. I bought a 2024 Z manual Performance, and recently took it on a 3100 mile road trip through the western US (Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona). I got 30.1 MPG for the whole trip, hand calculated at fill-ups. My calculated MPG at each fill-up was between 29 and 31 MPG all the way. I was very surprised by that, especially considering how much time was spent at 75+ MPH. There was even some canyon-carving and a few full-throttle blasts too.

That pretty damn good! After hearing this,I really wish the new Z came out with a 2+2 more than ever now 😢

I had a m235i with the zf8 transmission and would get 30mpgs for roadtrips. Except on a few stretches where i was on cruise control at 105mph for 100 miles. That sucked down the gas quickly. Got a love a car that allows you to engage cruise control at any speed you want. One of the best cars i have owned to date. The gr is way more fun but hwy its not as good at high speeds for long periods of time. Its fast enough and will go 120 really easy but its more high rpms running that speed. If the gr86 had that zf8 auto box it probably would also get 30mpgs easily. The 8th gear was epic for hwy stuff.

@@immunity4soul I had a 2017 m240i coupe with the 6 speed manual trans. It also got 30 mpg at 70-75 MPH.

Thoughts on highway travel in smallish sporty cars? This GR86 is surprisingly pleasant for short stints. Seats pretty good for the first couple of hours but probably a good yoga stretch needed to continue on. Check ouy oir two videos on this GR86. If visiting the channel, consider subscribing. We’d love to have you along for the ride!

33mpg is pretty impressive for what the Subaru engine is. Similarly, the ND Miata beats EPA ratings a lot of times - I tend to get 38-42 crusing on the freeway at 70-75mph. And things like the Golf GTI or Civic SI easily get 40+ MPG. The GR86 will hurt your pockets more - consumables on an ND Miata are really affordable. But an 86 is definitely a much more comfortable car with actual trunk space. I can carry 4 tires in my Miata, but just barely haha. I have no need for passenger space, so I went Miata.

@@notdaijoubu5062 thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Yea; the Miata even does well in city driving. The Subie is the odd man out when it comes to efficiency. But that is a trademark of the boxer and Toyota did add port fuel injection, not the most efficient, for reliability. We have an ND3 RF review out on the channel now. Enjoy your Miata and happy motoring.

On a 24 BRZ Limited, and have done 3 hr drives and seats are quite comfy for me. I get like 21 MPG (Sport Mode) on a highway. It’s surprisingly good. Road noise can get loud, but it’s not a grand tourer or an SUV so it’s pretty acceptable for me.

I have not driven a Miata to compare it to, but I have this exact car. The Trueno blue premium , but 2023.. so I guess like you said, it’s good for what it is as far as taking it on a long trip. But it’s no Camry obviously. I went to Tennessee with my daughter from Florida. When you get on the road for that many hours, your thighs start to hurt from the bolsters, squeezing you too tight, unless maybe you are very thin.l am 6’1, and about 190. So I’m not fat or skinny. And she is 14 years old. So not large either.. Both of us were very uncomfortable by the time we got to our destination. I used to have a 1987 MR2, and it actually had a dial where you could rack the bolsters in and out.. the seats just seemed softer too. I’m going to say the seats in the GR 86 probably are superior for a track day, but they do become uncomfortable on long road trips. They are fine, however for a shorter trip like you took. The flipside is, I have taken the car on the tail of the dragon, and it is just unbelievable how well-balanced the car is. I mean, it is like next level good. There was every kind of car there. Challenger, mustangs, Camaros, Z,s, Porsches, etc. I never once needed to pull into a pull off to let anyone pass me for the whole 318 curves.. All the guys bragging about their massive HP numbers simply had little chance of hanging with me. but long road trips, yeah, I’m taking my Camry Xse any day..

Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. I think about 3 hours was going to be my seat limit before a long break. Bolsters are usually too aggressive on a lot of cars and can make long distance travel less comfortable. Congrats on your 86. It’s a special machine. Coincidentally we also had an 1987 MR2. Silver with t-tops and black leather. Loved that car. We road tripped it quite a bit. One time the muffler blew a hole in it so that was not so fun. Again, thanks for watching and happy motoring.

Well, the car is very nice, but the RTV issues are still not solved, which means you will need to spend another budget to fix the RTV issue
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive 6 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching and weighing in on this topic. I think since the issue is understood it’s highly advised that folks get their car assessed to see if there is any rtv in their oil pan or oil filter before any damage.
@davidvusich1603
@davidvusich1603 14 сағат бұрын
Literally zero cars have blown their engines due to rtv. They blow up because the oil thins out and because the oil pan doesn’t have any baffles so in long corners the engine gets starved for oil because it all sloshes to one side

Agree with your review. Note, I disconnected the engine sound speaker, and it makes a very noticeable difference on road trips. I'm curious if different tires would also make a difference.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I mention in the full review I would disconnect that pumped in sound. Not that it sounds horrible but it’s just too much. Too bad you cannot adjust it to a lower level. Yes; I do think those sticky tires tend to be a little noisier. Thanks again and happy motoring!
