PHEVs don’t make sense if your daily commute is longer than the EV range (for the majority of the year). The whole point is to be able to do the majority of your driving in EV, saving the ICE for longer trips. This means your actual mpg will be incredibly high, your maintenance will be minimal, and you’ll have a minimum of heat cycles on the ICE. Folks buying PHEVs to not plug them in or daily them beyond the range are screwing themselves daily.

@@EUC-lidyes they do. You get the first 40 miles all electric then the rest of your commute is hybrid. You average mpg for 50 mile round trip commute would still be ridiculously high.

@@shaananwalsh7513 most PHEVs get worse mpg than the lighter hybrid in the same car. If you still need to heat cycle the engine just as much, still burn gas every day, and visit the gas station every week you’re not really saving anything. Just by a standard hybrid and save many thousands of dollars and get better mpg day in and day out.

I got my 2023 Prius Prime XSE Premium in September. In the 6 months I've had the car, I've only put $35 in gas. That's in California, where gas is more expensive too. I love driving it in EV mode. It has a good amount of low-end torque, so it's fun to drive from a dead stop. When I need more power, I switch to HV mode. I drive about 10-15 miles per day so I charge it in my garage every 2-3 days. The EV range has increased by a couple of miles. Was regularly 39 miles, and now it's 41 miles. BTW, I paid MSRP and waited about 6 months for it.

Thanks for the video and review of the car. Having a virtual test drive saves some of us from trekking down to the stealership. I've been a Prius fan since Toyota introduced the car. I bought the first generation in October 2002 and it was fairly trouble-free with 57 mpg on the highway and 45 in the city. The Prime model that you demonstrated to us, I feel has some serious deficiencies: lack of headroom in back for six feet plus passengers (all my immediate family fall between 6 foot and 6 1/2 feet tall. The quirky dash with the faraway gauge cluster with small fonts is a huge turnoff with some part of the steering wheel always obstructing and occupying the crotch area. The thick A pillars are monstrously huge and adds to the claustrophobic attribute of the high visual obstruction to the rear. And the heat-pump doesn't work below 14 degrees in the winter, necessitating running the engine over the electric battery for defrost or heat. I think that a standard Prius or better yet, a hybrid Corolla or Camry might be a better and much cheaper value, especially in a colder climate, and they would have better outward visibility.

I love that Toyota saves the engine like this in its hybrid tech. I was initially worried about this in my Crosstrek PHEV (which uses parts from the previous Prius PHEV system) because I live in a cold location and the engine fires up on me sometimes when I do not expect it. I noticed that the engine was warming, but not giving me the extra power until the warm-up cycle was complete.

You're right about the tires - they're not just weird...they're irreplaceable at the moment. Passed on buying a Prius Prime today b/c they're backordered until late April/May in SoCal. Forums seem to net this out as well - bunch of people with their cars just sitting on blocks b/c they can't replace tires. Can't recommend this car until you can get a flat and fix it...

I took a look at this updated/refreshed Prius when I was car shopping six months ago. As someone who is on the shorter side (5 ft 5 in), I felt like the headroom in the second row was not adequate. I decided that a RAV4 Hybrid fit more of my needs in the long run.

I’m in the same boat, but a little taller. But unless RAV 4 Hybrids or Primes can someday match or exceed the EPA rated fuel economy of my Prius V, I’m sticking with what I have until it dies on me, and I find myself settling for a standard Prius. As long as l have friends and family with a van or SUV, I am okay favoring MPG over cargo space. Ideally, I’d like Toyota to bring the Prius V back so I can enjoy the benefits of both worlds, but given how poorly it performed in sales last time, I don’t see that happening.

It's adorable how you click your feet before getting into the car. Sheesh that Prius is really nice. I don't know how I feel about dealing with two power sources (fuel and electricity). It seems like another gauge to refill and keep track of. Can you compare milage between the Prius Prime and the Prius? I have a 2017 Prius, and the cabin looks larger than the newer models. I also do not like the gauge cluster at all in the newer model. It's behind the steering wheel and small to read. I'm tall and have long legs, and your legs looked cramped in there. Why is that red light flashing along the dashboard? It could trigger epilepsy. That would drive me nuts.

Great review as always! I think people who balk at the price of this car, forget that the Prius (and Prime by extension)has had declining sales volume over the last decade. This new generation Prius is for a very niche market and Toyota prob assumes that old gen prius owners are going to move on to a hybrid or PHEV crossover. Toyota has a hybrid option for virtually all their vehicles which puts the prius in a complex position in the lineup. The price point of the prius has moved up market to try and poach consumers who would otherwise buy a fully electric vehicle (Tesla M3 Kia EV6 Hyundai Ioniq 5 etc). PHEVs are always going to be more expensive than traditional hybirds and that has always been the case. Our car market has shifted and what was once "cheap" is not the case anymore. In order to keep the prius alive Toyota did a whole 360 redesign which also meant an increase in price. I would say if one is looking for a budget hybrid option then a corolla hybrid is the best bang for your buck.

Well, the 2nd Gen Prius wasn't classified as an affordable car either. I bought my 2004 Prius, top trim, and it cost me $33,000. I paid $3,000 over sticker. There was a 3-4 month waiting period, so I paid the $3,000 to jump the line. The Prius only became more affordable years later.

I love this POV style. It makes me feel like that's how it is driving the car. My current commutes are split between one week of driving regular road posted 40-45 mph to just go from home to work. I would definitely put it in EV mode only. On the other week, I gotta do highway driving for about a total of maybe 55-60 miles. I would definitely put the car in hybrid mode for that. The ~$40K for this kind of a small car is a little worrisome, but so are the current prices in general. I like the fact that this Prime version has a solar panel in the roof. I think every car that has some form of electric engine should be equipped with that. It's just simply an additional source of energy to charge the battery. Where I live (in Illinois), we get plenty of sunshine during the summer months. It would totally be worth it. Judging by the video, the handling of this car looks really really good. And so does the acceleration. I am driving a 2014 Ford Fusion S, and man, that car can feel sluggish, and my transmission has these weird engine stalls at times. Anyway, the point is: I feel like switching to a car like this. If only I hadn't driven that Tesla Model 3 on that one week-end my car was out for service. THAT was a very nice ride!!! But this new Prius seems like the next best thing. Also: I am a renter, and don't have a plug here at my home to charge. So maybe the Hybrid will just do fine.

The Prime (and probably the regular Prius hybrid), does not have an "On-Off" for Re-Gen brakes. They are active regardless of your setting choice. Though, you can select how much regeneration takes place. But, you have to set that when the car is not in motion (and via the steering wheel switches). We have ours set to Max to claim as much energy as possible. The higher the amount of Re-Gen you choose the closer to "one peddle" driving you have. And, of course, it's not the brakes that generate the power when slowing, rather, it's the electric motors. There's one hill we travel every day and when we coast down it, the battery picks-up 2% charge. After three+ months (and close to 4,000Km), we have used one tank of fuel in our Prime.

Goodlooking but I prefer my ‘21 Prius XLE. I’ve got the 15” alloy rims which are much smoother than these low profiles with 19” rims. I also don’t like the flimsy trunk cover and compromised low rear roofline. And the price is crazy, like everything these days.

hows cabin noise. i test drove the 2023 rav4 hybrid limited, its engine is loud as a 2 stroke trail bike. awful driving experience. I could hear the engine inside the cabin like theres no sound dampening. The new Rav4 is the best selling crossover in the USA. Do these ppl drive with apple airpods or noise canceling headphones.

Carmakers need to start making cars that fit people. Back in the 90s small cars this size had gobs of headroom and back leg room...now not so much. Also, they are more diff to enter n exit as they are so low to the ground,,,lookin at you civic. As well the steeply rated wind screens are solar gain collectors and hard to clean. Is it any wonder why cuv and suvs are so popular? In ur vid, the expansion joints seen very loud....how is the sound deadening?

What's the purpose of that blinking light above the steering wheel (infrared sensor I'm guessing)

I ordered a XSE Premium Prime last October 2023. Toyota dealer tells me that it might arrive late 2024 or early 2025. Can't get the solar roof in Canada. Had a Volt for 10 years - the Prime is almost the car the Volt was. Have a Maverick Lariat Hybrid now (took 13 months for an XLT Hybrid to arrive and another six to get the Lariat model I couldn't order initially). Fortunately, I am a patient person.

How is a vehicle like this for someone who doesn't care about gas mileage? I'm looking for a second vehicle and the new Camry is on my list, but should I put this one one it as well?

Power tailgate is a deal killer for me unless lower trims don't have it. I use my Prius for work and open the hatch 50+ times a day. That mechanism would be lucky to last a month. Not to mention having to wait for it to open and close would drive me insane.

I wonder when this plug in is compared to the regular hybrid, if it’s cheaper to just buy the regular Prius. After 35-40 miles you’re just hauling around an extra 307 pounds until you recharge, and also pay thousands more in sticker price, plus the cost of charging. What say you? ✌️
@mattwilson9293
@mattwilson9293 3 ай бұрын
Most people who buy this car have commutes that are less than 40 miles, and therefore the idea of "hauling around an extra 300lbs until you recharge" doesn't come into play.

I really like everything about this car; but the price is WHACK. Here in Canada the top trim prime is ~$50,000. You can just get far nicer cars at that price point, both new and used

@mattwilson9293

"a lot" is very subjective. Before buying this car, I drove a chevy cobalt, chevy spark, and chevy trax. This prius prime is insanely quiet compared to those cars. If you're worried about the engine noise in this car, then consider yourself privileged for this to be a "problem!"

I would say noise is better than my 3rd gen Taurus, better than my 2nd gen Prius, and better than my 2012 MKZ hybrid. Road noise is worse than the RAV4 Prime but wind noise is better (especially if the roof racks are installed on the RAV4).
