I have a 2014 Tundra I bought new in ‘14. When I was young, I had an ‘88 Nissan 4x4 (4 cylinder) and a ‘95 Nissan 4x4 (6 cylinder). I put over 200k miles on both. Both ran like new when I sold them. I did just basic maintenance stuff. I was very impressed on longevity with those trucks. If I was in the market for a small truck, I’d buy that 6 cylinder Nissan 4x4 they have now. I just wouldn’t tow horse trailers or larger boats with it. Knowing how overkill I am on maintenance, I’d feel confident that Nissan would last me well over 20 years and still run like new. My Tundra now runs better than when I first drove it off the lot 10 years ago. My advice- buy something built to last. Learn to do your own maintenance on it. Park in a garage if you can. Pay it off as quickly as you can. Drive it for at least 10 years after paying it off. Save that imaginary payment monthly for those 10 years for your emergency fund. Invest as much as you can in a retirement plan. You’ll be a happy camper when you get gray hair some day.

After talking with some people in the industry I’m not as worried about the new turbo 2.4L. Toyota’s actually been testing the engine for over six years now and there’s a lot of complicated science that goes behind the design to make it reliable. The new combustion burn efficiency rates are straight up magic and all the major components like rod bearings have been beefed up to meet their reliability standards. For example it has two less cylinders than the V6 but the rod bearings are 30% bigger which actually equals out to less total stress. The 2.4L is going into THREE of Toyotas flagship vehicles. They’re not going to do that with an engine that doesn’t live up to their reputation. It’s not the 1980’s anymore you can build a reliable turbo 4 it’s just really expensive to do right which is reflected in the prices unfortunately.

Long story short 14 thousand miles the whole front differential had to be replaced by a second dealership because it was "full of metal in the fluid." Toyota skimped out on the sound deadening with the windshield cowl which resulted in sounds as if the windshield would split in two at any minute. I had to fix that myself. Thank goodness for the 4runner forums and their ideas where to add insulation. I think toyota has been cutting corners and it's all coming to fruition. I was in the bed of the truck looked back at the tailgate and I saw a huge gap on the right side. I got out of the truck and looked and it was obvious, the tailgate was not alined properly! I was upset to say the least since I just paid almost $70k for the most expensive vehicle I have ever owned. 3. Took it to the dealer the day after I bought it and they had to schedule to have it looked at. I know if I saw this before I bought it that it would have been looked at that day. Needless to say I am worried about long term owning this truck. 4. On the plus side it is the safest and most comfortable Tacoma I have ever owned! It handles well, at least on the road. I only have 100 miles on it. 5. It is the most bad ass looking truck I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned a lot of tacomas and tundras since 1999 when I bought my first Toyota truck in Colorado. 6. I’ve owned 2 TRD PRO’s now, a 2018 and this 2024 and it is the most upgraded over any other trim level for the first time in my opinion. 7. I’ll keep you posted as I intend to keep this vehicle a long time provided it does hold up to my expectations of a Toyota truck. Aloha🤙🏻

Of note is that when they were builing Tacomas at both locations it was the Baja plant trucks that had few quality issues and warranty related repairs. So they earned it.

I’ve owned an 02 Tacoma Prerunner, was a tank, and now have a 22 Tacoma TRD Sport, built in Mexico and the quality doesn’t compare. There are whistling sounds from the trim when the windows are closed. Fuck Toyota for gouging loyal customers when the they’re paying pennies on the dollar for labor.

Toyota starting pay to work on the manufacturing line in Texas is $21.25 an hour, which can be found if you go on Toyotas careers website. From what I read an average factory worker in Mexico has seen their pay rising, $5 an hour wouldn't be out of the ordinary. 21 hours to build the average Toyota automobile. So $446.25 to build a Toyota in Texas. $105 to build that same Toyota in Mexico. Either way, these trucks are WAYYYYY to expensive!!!
@williamjames89247 ай бұрын
When I voiced my concerns about the truck being built in Mexico to the Toyota dealership salesman, before I bought the truck, he informed me that it would be built the same as if it were built in Mexico. Just finished having my 2023 Tacoma recall completed and wondering what's next? FYI I gave my 1995 Tacoma to my grandson with nearly 400,000 miles on it. I told my grandson I don't know but I suspect she will go another 200,000?

I am so sick of corporations building all their products outside of the United States but selling most all their crap to the working class Americans who struggled more every year to find a decent paying job. I chose Toyota when I left Ram because they manufactured their trucks at the time in the US.
@willyjimmy88817 ай бұрын
You do know Toyota is not an American company right? I mean I'm with you when an American company leaves for cheaper labor, but this is a Japanese multinational. And they pay way way way more than $2.70 an hour like this smooth brained fraudster says anyway. The Toyota plant is one of the highest paying factory jobs in the region.

New here but feels like you just have a grudge against Toyota. All new cars are super complex. The head unit failed in my mom’s outback and the replacement cost was over 5k. The car literally won’t run without it because most of the interior and drivetrain settings use it. I’m looking for a compact truck currently and in east TN you can’t get a Tacoma unless you put down a deposit. Most TRD models are sold as soon as they’re allocated.

I had a '17 Taco, loud inside, paint scratches if you look at it wrong, can hear the bed cracking when you put something heavy in it. Love (lol) the transmission hunting for gears constantly too. I think Toyota cashed in the last of their chips on this generation Taco. People waking up from a bitch slap with the 50-60k price tag. I am very happy with my '23 Canyon 4x4 with 310/430 power... paid 42k!

Love that I found your channel. Love the honesty and what other people are thinking. Or at least what I am thinking about Toyota. Wanted the Tacoma so much. Was waiting for this new gen but the cost was crazy. The mpg that was rumored to be around 30 mpg for the hybrid was super disappointing. Have 1-2 mpg more than the gas engine sucks. With the million trim levels that Toyota seems to like with their cars I think the options that they could have made with the Tacoma was missed. I feel SUVs and trucks are kinda like the new family “car”. They should have more engine choices, kept a bigger gas tank or at least an option for a bigger gas tank. Could have expanded the back seat about 6 inches to a foot by taking the option of a 6ft bed. Take the 1ft bed, put it in the backseat area and keep the 5ft bed. And yes everyone it would be hard on the line when producing all the trucks but have the option at least. I know it is all about money but slow down and build quality and wipe out your competition. Thanks.

Here's something that really stands out to me. Every Toyota I've seen for the last 20 years has an emblem on the back that says V6 or V8. How come Toyota doesn't put the I4 emblem on these things? They do put an IForceMax one, but that's to tout the electric assist. It's clear that even Toyota knows that "I4" is not emblem-worthy.

Mechanic here, 2.4 is a big 4 cylinder, direct and tune port injection, can't wait for aftermarket to get a hold of it. Gr coralla cant make 400hp out of 3 cylinder. But get good milage when driven normally. As for manufacturing, labour is not the biggest cost, taking years for approval of a new factory , zoning, environmental, federal, state, county...... then corrupt union leaders, 2 in Canada are under investigation, where in Mexico, you start building tomorrow.

I agree, I’ve been asking this question forever and the fan boys always shout me down. All of the cost cutting, WE as a the consumer don’t see diddly squat of the cost savings. I’m cool with a digital dash and no buttons, it saves money right? Only for the manufacturer… instead WE pay more. Remove cylinders/injectors etc and slap a turbo on, cost savings… not for us. Everything going electronic, no more complicated distributors in cars, no more mechanical throttles, that means it can all be made by machines to consistent specs and less parts, very little hand interventions but nope we don’t see the cost savings.

I don’t have an issue with the 4 cylinder and I think these engines can be engineered to be relatively reliable (time will tell) but the prices are so out to lunch that I will not buy one as much as I’d like too. I’ve wanted a Tacoma for the last 10 years but I just always felt like they were priced too high for what they are, now with Toyota raising the prices I will probably never pull the trigger on one. Canada prices are on another level. A 3rd gen trd off-road premium was 55k in 2018. Now by the time you leave the dealership in your 2024 it will be pushing $70,000 combined with terrible interest rates it’s an absolute joke.. not to mention Toyota’s bs subscription.
