I bought a black one in May ( 4 months ago) after looking at them on line and im magazines and thought yep its a good looking bike and as im getting old now and want smaller lighter bikes ill at it to my garagem but at 39 bhp wasnt sure if i would enjoy it, but bought it anyway ..... the result, ...shocked, how can i be having so much fun out of 39 bhp, its brilliant, wants to be flicked around and makes you really push it ..... cant recommend enough, for anyone, dont let begginers have all the fun. Ive been riding 47 years and love this bike

It's great to see manufacturers starting to take the small/mid size bike range a lot more seriously. And it's great to see reviewers review these bikes for what they are. The horsepower/top speed game has been run and done. Now it's time to see who can build the best motorcycle.

I am more of a sport bike guy, and I totally agree with you about the gold anodized forks. I know looks are subjective, but IMO that gold color just looks out of place on most street bikes. It has just become associated with performance suspensions. While I'm on a rant, I'm over the flat paint as well. And I've got an aviator (flat) grey Ducati Monster. But I had to get that to get the red wheels. Some day I'll give it a custom paint job. Great review. Some of the super pros are fun to watch, but you represent 99% of most of us riders.

I agree with you 100%. Dark grey forks would look better. And all paint should be semi-gloss or gloss, except for the exhaust pipe which could be flat grey or flat black. I hope that at some point Triumph or a third party offer a softer seat, maybe one inch thicker. Hopefully, someday someone will offer an instrument option with twin round gauges. I am 71 years old now and most often ride in town so this 400 looks like a much better fit for me than the 900 or 1200. I have loved Triumphs since I was 16 and this newest one has re-ignited my passion.

The ugly gold forks is most likely a deliberate choice to make customers opt for the more expensive speed twin. Companies are notorious for doing this with other products as well.

Thursday I did buy one after a test drive, made my mind up in five minutes. OK it's not like my Trident 660 or the FZ1 Fazer or any of my other bikes but it drives really relaxed. Good brakes and handling, engine dose not disturb, just doing his work and that I found it dose excellent. Has the same HP as my 650 Mash Xride and it's 7kg lighter. Ordered the blue one because here in France at Triumph Tours you can order a red one but there is no certain delivery date. They had a blue in in stock so I took that one, a black one was coming but that took again some time and blue looks good.

Ive ridden both back to back. At 6'1" i found the scramble bike quite a step to get into the seat. I dont have good hips anymore. That and the high ish bars didnt feel that comfortable for me. A switch to the 400 street and what a difference. Easy to get on, and handled very well. Do you really need anything bigger...probably not. And the fact not mentioned is, the 400s fall into the cheap tax bracket .

170km with half a tank is impressive, I ride a Triumph Street Twin 2016 and from full until the fuel light comes on it does approximately 170km and sometimes about 160km, I agree on the forks, they should be Black and on another note, Triumph nailed it again when it comes to exhaust sound, it really doesn't need an aftermarket one. the exhaust muffler sounds good and has the right shape and size.

@@kwakithailand it depends where you live I suppose, as I said I do that kind of distance with the 900cc Street Twin which it's not a powerhouse nor a High revving engine. @@ripmax333 yes, you are absolutely right, mate 👍 It's depending on the traffic as well as short/long distance rides situation. In BKK's stop 'n go traffic I'm getting 250 km out of a 19l tank, up at the Mekhong 350 km are realistically possible. Keep them wheels rollin, mate 👍

@2ndcornets
@2ndcornets Ай бұрын
I own a Meteor and enjoy riding it BUT it is pretty slow and heavy compared with the Triumph, and is restricted to run out of puff altogether at about 70mph which is just plain daft. Any 1970's mid cc bike [even the Yamaha RD250 I had then] would blow it into the weeds. So I may well swap to a Triumph.

Thats much more like it should be. Just had a look at the specs, and its virtually twice the power of the RE350. Now, Im no boy racer (way too old for that stuff), but I always thought the RE was seriously lacking, whereas this little Triumph looks like an absolute ripper. Particularly for new riders. Many years ago I had, as a second bike for city commuting, a Suzuki GS 450twin. At the time, Learners and provisional licence riders in Australia were limited to 250cc, and I thought that was a shame, as the little Suzi would have been perfect for a beginner to learn on. The rules here have changed a lot since then, but I still think that size and performance are ideal for newer riders, those whose main riding is commuting, or folks who are not interested in big powerful bikes, for various reasons. Looking at its specs, its virtually the same as the Speed 400. Brilliant 😊, and it looks gorgeous too 👍🏼

Having not been riding long (I've only had my Royal Enfield Metor 350 for 8 months and my A2 Licence the same amount of time). I went to my local triumph dealer and tested the speed 400 and scrambler 400X. Needless to say, I've part exchanged my Royal Enfield and decided to go for the speed 400. I'm also 6 ft 1 , but I found the speed more comfortable and stable than the scrambler. But I think that's just down to rider preference. It was the extra power that really sold me. On the meteor, you really have to plan out your overtakes in advance, whereas the speed has a lot more pull and exudes confidence. Loved the meteor but think this bike will be mine for the forseeable.

When these Triumph 400's were announced I was hoping that the power would be significantly higher than the RE's and it appears so, I saw them at the NEC last year and the Scrambler really looked good. I was tempted by the new Himalayan but if the Scrambler review is similar or better than the steet 400 I will be looking for a test ride ASAP.

My speed 400 would not start the first day that i got it. Got it to the shop and they i guess fixed it and now it is doing it all over again and it is back in the shop again. I made a video of what it is doing on my channel. I would turn the key to start and and got nothing, i would then turn it off and turn it back on and it would fire right up. It does this ALL THE TIME!!

@@MrDarcy-OlMan If you look into it there are a lot of other people having the same problem. Triumph even made a new soft ware update because of the problem thinking that was it and would solve it just to find out that is not the problem, lol.

I would like it in blue with the seat from the scrambler I prefer the seat hight with my limited mobility and spine issues. Normally would go for the scrambler variety but it’s harder for me to ride these days. I’d have to try both seats but I like the look of the split seat on the scrambler

Great value. When they black the engines why dont they use black bolts? forks look terrible and it needs a tail tidy but spart from that I'd consider one.

170km using 6.5L = 74mpg (I know the use was estimated). I'm also not a fan of the gold forks and have been surprised at all the reviews praising them so highly.

Thanks, you can take an A2 license test on it but you cannot ride it to the test. You would have to get someone to transport it there for you which is the catch 22 situation, the rules have brought about 👍🏼

Great review, the Speed 400 isn't my kind of bike however it is good looking and if I was just starting out as a biker then it would certainly be on my list, I agree with you on the gold anodised forks , they are a little out of place with the bikes styling and don't do it any favours. I'm sure Triumph are going to take a lot of sales away from RE especially with younger riders, so all in all the new Speed 400 is probably a winner.

The scrambler version of this bike, is along with the RE 350 classic and Honda CB/GB 350S/RS on my tight top 3 bikes to buy list. Which one will it be, will depend on the current prices once i make the purchase. They all have something unique to offer, and the price-to-pleasure and price-to-value ratios will the be key (as prices sometimes do vary from country to country. Of course the CB/GB 350 is yet to arrive in Europe, so i'll be waiting for the reviews on that too.

Great review. As with the "BSA" l wouldn't lay out my money for a bike when l don't see it as what it's name on the tank suggests it is. I actually live 1 mile from a Triumph dealer but l've not seen one on the road, but very recently l've seen them in Cadiz, Las Palmas, Alicante, Seville & Malaga so they are certainly resonating with younger riders there. 👍

One thing I’d say about RE 350’s though is at the moment MotoGB is selling off their stock of RE bikes at £1000-£1500 off list. That means a brand new Meteor 350 Fireball for £2999, which is significantly cheaper than the Triumph.

Now days I see these bikes quite often on Indian roads and the only thing that I personally don't like is that this bike looks really small in flesh. I haven't seen scrambler variant up close but I feel that bike would be a better option for people above 6ft.

How does this fare, feel and drivability wise to Royal Enfield's Hunter 350? I will be taking my MSF very soon and one of these will be my first bike. My gut tells me the RE, being $1k less would be a better "knock around" bike to learn on and take advanced rider classes with it, rack up some miles and experience and then snag the Triumph a year later once riding has become second nature, and just own both of them. I like them both, after all. But maybe that would be a redundancy, and I should opt for plan B: go for the triumph 400 learn all the important rider skills on that over a year or two, and hopefully in that year or two Royal Enfield finally builds a classic 650 and I get that for a second bike. lol Thanks for a great run down of this beauty of a bike! Triumph and RE's are the bees knees, for sure!
