For someone like me who drives 60kms a day for work and charge at home using solar panels, I can save around $3k per year in fuel, or $30k at 10 years or in 20 years, if it lasts that long, the car would completely pay for itself. There are also other advantages compared with other 4WDs, no need to install expensive second battery system, this doesn't need a snorkel, have no transmission overheating issues, no drive shafts breaking. Might even be able to rig up solar panels on the roof to recharge the battery system.

For everyone that don't know it already: 1 - The exact same principle of the Shark and other EREV vehicles are in use by diesel-electric trains and ships for more than a century. 2 - BYD is the third most valuable automaker in the world, it is already one of the largest by volume and ready to overtake Ford, and in the Chinese market that is the largest in the world and two times the US market, from the ten most sold vehicles there, seven are BYD - they also make trains, buses, trucks, it is one of the largest battery makers in the world, and battery OEM for Tesla and Toyota among others. If I would bet against any automaker regarding warranty claims and parts availability, it would be against Tesla and those legacy automakers being disrupted and going bankrupt, paralyzing and closing factories.

How can you fairly compare the BYD Shark against a Ford Ranger Raptor. A new BYD Shark 6 is $60,000 whilst the Raptor 3.0 lt turbo petrol is over $100k The Raptor drinks 11.5 L/100Km whereas the BYD is 7.5 L/100Km on petrol only. The BYD Shark is better appointed and once the newer model comes out with the higher tow rating I believe that the Raptor will be left in the dust. The days of overpriced 4x4s are coming to an end with ten new brands reported to be arriving from China throughout 2025.

I don't know how familiar you are with BYD, but their car division is barely 20 years old (founded in 2003), and were still making pretty crappy ICE powered cars (yes only cars, not trucks or vans) until like 2020, when they just started introducing fully electric or plug in electric vehicles like they are going out of style. The Shark is the FIRST EVER pickup truck BYD has ever made, and shockingly seems highly competitive with the current market leaders. BYD has simultaneously introduced their first ever MPV (Denza D9), supercar (Yangwang U9), hardcore offroad SUV (FCB Bao 5), A segment city car (the wildly popular BYD Seagull), luxury executive sedan (Yangwang U7), luxury offroad SUV that can literally drive on water (Yangwang U8), and maybe a dozen more brand new models. BYD is literally the boogeyman for every major automaker in the world right now, both inside and outside of China.
@brettmorton7365
@brettmorton7365 2 ай бұрын
@tren133 I didn't realise that they were so new. I have heard they are currently the largest seller in China. Also I've briefly driven the U8 and it seems quite impressive with its many (some would say gimmicky) features like it's ability to float and do tank turns. But it's a very nice vehicle! I guess we will have to keep our eyes on their reliability over the next few years.
@tren133
@tren133 2 ай бұрын
@@brettmorton7365 Yes BYD used to be a battery business (still is mainly a battery business, which really gives it an edge in building EVs at a competitive cost obviously), but bought this little state owned carmaker called Qinchuan Motors which was perhaps the worst carmaker still in business in the 21st century, and spent a good decade making better but still pretty crappy ICE powered cars. But they started to try to pivot to EVs early on, stuck with it, and that progress has really accelerated in the past 5 years, catapulting them into becoming China's number 1 automaker. Probably by the end of next year, BYD will also have surpassed the likes of Ford, Honda, Nissan, Renault etc to become the number 6 global automaker as well behind Toyota/VW/Stellantis/Hyundai/GM. I think one thing people don't realize about BYD beyond their sales numbers is the deep technical capacity they are building into their cars, especially on the hardware side, all of which are fully vertically integrated and owned by BYD itself. That U8 has a quad motor drivetrain which was a world first at the time, and so sophisticated BYD build a demonstrator version where they removed the STEERING and BRAKE systems from a U8, and you could drive it around just using the 4 motors to do both steering and braking. It's waterproofing ability is also an industry first and only. Plus most high end cars use air suspension but the U8 uses a electro-hydraulic suspension (DiSus-P) which is yet another industry exclusive. And on the cheap car side, which remains BYD's bread and butter, BYD is actually credited with putting the first ever PHEV on the market in 2008, slightly ahead of the Toyota Prius PHEV. That DM 1.0 PHEV was very crude, but BYD is now up to DM-i 5.0, which released earlier this year, which are possibly the most fuel efficient PHEVs on the market today, and absolutely selling like hotcakes. Overall BYD's rise over the past decade has been truly remarkable, even if Tesla got most of the press over those years. But the future seems to lean more towards BYD domination, not Tesla, especially since Tesla seems to be putting all their eggs in that ridiculous cybertaxi thing.

Thank you, really honest review given the constraints placed on you. I think the big test will be long corrugated roads in northern Australia and whether the electronics will survive. Similarly with river crossings etc. I agree with other comments, it looks like a well priced and good compromise for tradies and people/families who like doing the odd bush and camping trip. We'll have to wait and see if it stands up as a serious, remote area work vehicle. I understand it's not pitched at that market anyway (I admit I'm not convinced the electronics will survive). Detractors are missing the point. This is a first gen PHEV ute and its already competitive with the Hilux and Ranger. Those utes got their following by being so much better than the Triton, Navara etc. that even when the others substantially closed the gap they're still seen as worse than second tier. They had the chance to do it again with new powertrains but didn't, preferring to ride a good profit margin on the same product instead. So what happens in 5 years (or let's be realistic, 2-3 years) when BYD or others can offer improvements on this Shark that even the strongest levels of nostalgia and brand loyalty can't make you overlook? Are we still going to pay a $10-$30k premium for a badge when the competition is objectively level or better? Personally I'd like to keep a ute for 10 years or more and don't trust parts availability and support from vertically integrated Chinese supply chains, so no matter how good it is I'd go for a legacy manufacturer instead - but if I were a fleet buyer who'll hand it back for a new model in 3 years (also known as "where the money is" in the car industry) I'd pick the one that did the job with the least purchase and operating costs and let the next guy worry about it. This is a real problem for Ford and Toyota.

Based on experience in New Zealand, that may not be too important. When our government subsidies were withdrawn, buyers shut their wallets somewhat. Many dealers dropped prices in response, so prices did not actually change as much as many people thought. The public perception was that they now had to pay more, so sales did not trend up again as much as the industry hoped. Since then, EV's now have to pay Road User Charges, based on distance travelled, the same as diesel vehicles, to recoup losses from reduced petrol excise tax.

We need real reviewers like ronny dahl to look at these. I feel all these first reviewers are just paid to make this content. Dont really give us much info about everyday specifics, especially for ourback use. Realistic range? Do we need to plug in after a certain time? What about water crossings? Can this be submerged for a period of time and still run? Why such a low towing capacity for a powerful engine?

@ no. Suspicious this news. I mean quality needs time approval. Toyota is stable because they may choose simple but stable design instead of some high tech design with instability. It is more likely Toyota uses chopsticks rather than Chinese brand because that may benefit fuel consumption.
