I get the concept of indoor outdoor glass doors but as an Aussie, I’ve never seen 1cm of the country without flies, mozzies, spiders and the odd snake. Now the insects can come inside even when you don’t go outside for a second and have fly screens on every window and door. Have always loved the idea of an interior garden.

Thank you for bluntly stating “Logos are stupid.”! I just had this discussion concerning fashion with my granddaughter, who, at 16, insists on clothing that says Nike on it. One pays more for the “privilege” of being a walking billboard for a company! In my opinion, logoed (yep, made up word) items should cost less, as these companies have huge marketing budgets! I feel they should be paying their free walking advertisers!
@user-qp6lj6gu7s3 сағат бұрын
There is another factor: to get people to want to wear the logo it has to be known as a somewhat expensive brand. Yet another one is that if you raise the price you keep poor people out that would be bad advertisement for the type of thing they're trying to sell. This is how they also trick low income people or teens to buy overpriced items, fake social status that no one else cares about. This is why it from time to time becomes unfashionable and looked down upon, like with the quiet luxury trend. Not saying it's good, but that's how it works, if you want to get through to her you'll have to show you understand what the appeal is in the first place. I guess warn her about it looking tacky.
@user-qp6lj6gu7s2 сағат бұрын
The channel Design Theory has several videos explaining this way better than any yt comment could, for example in the video called "how brands use design & marketing to control your mind" You'll find it easily, it's the one with the Nike logo in the thumbnail 😂

I love a partially open floor plan. Don’t like kitchen all closed off, but I do like escaping to a separate dining room so I can eat in peace without seeing the mess I just created. And then escaping to a separate TV area so I can continue to ignore the dishes, or the noise created by whomever was kind enough to clean them for me.
@kellistorie791747 минут бұрын
I find the "clean as you go" method to be quite effective. I can make an elaborate meal for 7-8 people, and when it comes time to sit down and serve the meal, other than the plates, silver, and serving dishes, the kitchen is quite clean and tidy.

Two of these make me very happy: rethinking open concept and a return to colour. While I've made some of my own house quite open because it just works for me, I've often thought that open concept kitchens are for people who either don't really cook or don't care how much mess their guests see. I have a 1.5 story 90s build, as well. Downstairs is partially open plan, but i love that the “business end” of the kitchen is not visible from the living room. The 1.5 story has charm, but the biggest thing is managing temperature control. The upstairs basically being a big partially-into-the-attic loft makes that a bit tricky. Been in the house a year and still trying to dial that in. A whole house fan for summer helped immensely, though. Love the additional easy access storage space it provides, though.

When we had to rebuild my condominium unit after a fire I rented a unit in the same building that was the same unit but was renovated with a n open plan and it was very when either of us were cooking and disturbing for whoever was sitting in the living room. Thrift stores, antique stores are all interesting. But it also depends on your perspective. My grandparents bought a cabin and it came fully furnished with absolutely everything. To my grandma a lot of stuff in there was just old junk. It’s stuff she had out at the ranch and she didn’t want it back then and she doesn’t want it now. So she was literally throwing it out the door and my dad was out there catching it all. To him it was great antiques to her. It was old junk. if you want to find some great old stuff, you go out in the country and you hit the estate sales. A lot of great stuff in those old barns and houses.

I love natural wood, I have to say though when people say they're going to paint a piece of beautiful wood, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Yes I've never had any luck at second hand stores unfortunately. I've never been struck on open concept. It's too hard to heat/cool a room. My main living room, the one I entertain in, is quite large and I find the a/c gets most annoyed with me if it's very hot in that room. When we went looking for a new one, I wanted it to be the kind of quality that would last another three decades, which is, I guess, "quiet luxury"? Ended up with the Reva from EQ3 in a mid-tone teal/blue,, and it makes me happy every time I look at it.

As a third-generation vintage junkie, I have to say that most thrift stores aren't really the best places to find vintage homeware and furniture. There are a few second hand stores that specialize in vintage furniture, ranging from dusty antique stores to heavily-marked-up mid-century modern specialists. In these cases, you are paying for not only the furniture but also the costs of running an in-person storefront. The emptier the space, the more each piece will cost, but usually you are also paying for better quality and curation. You should expect to be able to get good information on the materials, construction, and designer of a piece in a high-end boutique. If you need the curation, and have the budget, the extra cost can be worthwhile to get a hold of a genuine, high-quality piece. Chances are they aren't trying to bilk you, they are just trying to make enough to pay their staff and the commercial rent. By contrast, a tiny weird old overstuffed pawnshop is probably going to have a lot of junk, but lower prices, and potentially good value hidden gems. But the best bet has always been estate sales and downsizing sales. People in those circumstances are looking to get rid someone else's stuff, not make a profit, and these days most estate sales are online, meaning you can bid from the comfort of your home. While some people have a lot of junk, others might have a whole house full of great stuff to offload. Just be careful not to bid more than you are willing to pay. It's helpful to have a lot of knowledge about the styles you hope to collect, so look for resources. The internet can be good, but also look for books and specialist magazines. Learning about types of wood is also valuable, because it can tell you more about the age and quality of a piece. If the materials aren't right for the period, a piece is probably a lower-quality reproduction rather than an original. Also be careful of flipped pieces. While some furniture flippers care a lot for their craft and can expertly repair or tastefully repurpose damaged pieces, others may simply slap on some paint and call it a day. While paint can be appropriate, keep in mind that it may indicate underlying damage to the wood surface (if there is one) and cause unintended problems like sticking drawers when used improperly. Traditionally, having an intact original finish on an antique or vintage piece increases its value. This does not always mean bare wood--some pieces may have always been painted, including those with period-specific folk art. However, most pieces aren't museum quality artifacts. At the end of the day, what someone does with a 1990s buffet is none of my business. Just be sure to know what you are buying and figure out if the price is worth it for you.

Nick is such a joy on a chaotic afternoon! Two weeks ago today, my Living Room and Kitchen Ceiling collapsed - the tenant upstairs had left the kitchen sink tap running and went out. I had to evacuate immediately. Went back later in the day to grab some clothes - landlord had construction guys in there with dehumidifiers as a first step. I stayed in a hotel for a week. Went back last Saturday with a Moving Crew and took my Clothes and Books and Kitchen Stuff (most of which had been packed for several months, planning to move) and Desk/Chair and a couple of Lamps. Everything else was a LOSS. Everything covered in Plaster Dust etc. - including what I took with me. A Mini-9/11. ( I lived in Manhattan at the time - I know what I'm talking about.) By a Miracle I was given a lovely 1BR Apartment in a highly rated Senior Residence. There's usually a 3 year Waiting List. So I've been here for a week, a bit dazed, but beginning to itemize Losses for Insurance and think about how I want to furnish my new Home. Nick, as always provides a certain necessary irreverent Frivolity to the all-important Question of Home Decor. Oscar Wilde would approve!

I hope every single one of these predictions will come true, because the extreme maximalism online is starting to give me a headache, and extreme minimalism got to a ridiculous point years ago.

If you want to find the good stuff at thrift stores, you just have to go everyday! Sometimes you get lucky and hit the jackpot. So if you go everyday, you have a higher chance of finding something good.

Thrift store treasures are HARD earned 😭 On occasion some thrift store virgin finds a great deal but usually you have to spend a lot of time going to thrift stores for years before you find that extra special treasure. If time is money then you are spending a lot of money in time on that item. If however, you enjoy looking at all the things then it is time you spent doing something relaxing then when you do find the special treasure it was time well spent 😊 Btw there is also a Goodwill online

The one reason i dont like the open concept is the cooking smells. I like keeping them contained to the kitchen and work from there.

Ha ha! As a third generation Italian I run around and close all the bedroom doors before I start frying meatballs! 😅 Can someone make a kitchen vent that really works but doesn't sound like a jumbo jet?

When my kids were younger, I had an open concept home That was practical. However, with teens and young adults I looove my separate living room, separate dinning room and a family room open to the kitchen.. Happy Bday🎉 from Puerto Rico!

My house came with a bridge sunroom that was painted in trauma-red. Not cherry. Not fire-engine. Not Ferrari. It was like TV-ER blood-bag red. It didnt make the room dark (sunroom) and there weren't huge walls covered in it (windows) but it wasn't a color for a relaxation room. So, be careful with reds.

Love my traditional floor plan with separate spaces and walls. My kitchen cabinets are unpainted wood. I considered painting them but I actually like seeing the wood grain. So I think I will keep them as they are but find a way to tone down the orange in the wood. Not sure how but there must be a way. I have really good luck finding beautiful expensive lamps at thrift stores. I even recently found a gorgeous brass and marble floor lamp sitting out on the sidewalk. After.seeing it there for two days in the rain I figured it was up for grabs and took it. All it needed was the little piece that turns the on and off switch. Otherwise it works great and looks pristine. Found the lamp on line for nearly $700. Wow.

if your wood is orangey, it may be just the topcoat has aged and "ambered". This is common with oil based and urethane varnishes. Big job but you can strip them and then use a non-urethane topcoat so they don't turn orange again.

I’ve given all of my 23yr+ wooden furniture new life by painting them. I bleached my buffet and added a paint wash to tone down the yellow in the wood. It’s now my feature piece with new handles. I painted the orange TnG that went half way up the walls that matched the orange timber floor and kitchen cupboards. It was a nightmare of colour drenching. Haven’t got rid of the floor colour yet but since painting the cupboards, I no longer screw up my face seeing them. They’re a beautiful neutral colour with white walls.

I never expected to hear you say you like wood paneling on walls, I thought I was watching an April 1st video for a minute 😂
@LlyleHunter4 сағат бұрын
It depends on the type of panels. Consider the type that Europeans used in mansions and castles as opposed to the sheet paneling that we used in the sixties. They’re very different.

I believe he's talking about real solid wood, not the plywood or MDF we used in the 1970s. (I'm not even sure they had the term MDF in the 70s, but I'm sure it was something equally classy.)

Walls are also great for energy efficiency. If you are not going to be in a room for awhile, you can turn the heat off in there, close the door, and save a little energy. Or if you are really poor, you can keep one or two heated rooms and save money. If you look at really old homes, those rooms are pokey for that reason.

I have a Chanel and Ralph Lauren book on display. For us, it’s not announcing our wealth because we’re pretty average. It’s just a way we show our interests, like the artwork or fotos that are on display. We do believe in elegance and quality, but in a low key way…..

I have three wooden doors in my house that are over 100 years old each. When I updated my house, people were telling me I should paint the doors. Are you Flippin kidding me!? I did not paint those doors.

I rewire thrift store lamps and have been doing it since pre pandemic. My favorite is a vintage brass Stiffel lamp I found for five bucks. It's cat proof it is so heavy. I am one of those people who will find interesting things in any thrift store. It's a matter of knowing what you are looking at. I collect swung glass vases and most of them are thrift. Vintage Mexican lottery is another thing and wonderful Italian glass that would go high at an antique store. So glad moody is back.
