Why do I get only 18 MPG? I drive very normally, with no hard braking or acceleration. I don't know what kind of gas I have in the tank. I've only gone 200 miles. My gear ratio is 3.55. Is this the reason?

I'm in the market for a RAM and have watched a lot of reviews. I enjoyed yours the most. Nicely done. I'd prefer the Hurricane but I don't think it's worth getting into a RAM with that engine for another 2 years or so to see how they're doing - seeing lots of early issues. I'm going with the 3.6 Pentastar. It suits my needs and is an extremely reliable engine that will last me a long time. I drive my trucks into the ground. Passing my 2003 Tacoma on to my son and buying a RAM soon.

I bet you could widen the gap ($10,000) price difference between those two trucks if you sat down and negotiated. Let’s say they discount the big horn by $15k and the new Hurricane motor only $5k to 8k until the shininess wears off the new powertrain

What gear ratio to run 2800 RPM's at 70mph in a 3.6? That seems very high. Did each vehicle have the same axle ratio? If not, your comparison test was a waste of time. I didn't hear you mention axle ratios. Maybe I missed it.

I haven't driven a Ram with the 3.6 but some other FCA vehicles like the minivan and Chrysler 300. Those felt a little lacking, I would that that would be amplified in the heavier truck.

If the pentastar mog does not increase in general then I would agree with this by far not worth losing power if the mpg stays that slight.
@austindavis19849 ай бұрын
I say this because I have heard once you get 8-10k on a pentastar that the mpg increases due to it getting broke in. Correct me of I am wrong.
@lucyfan19769 ай бұрын
@@austindavis1984 That is possible. So interesting enough I have a ram 1500 rental with the Pentastar. I have had it for 2 weeks now. Just took a trip to Maryland from Monmouth County NJ. I averaged 20.8 mpg going to Perryville and coming home literally right around the same. I want driving 75mph ballpark the whole time. Honestly, its a heavy truck but although not terrible I do not think giving up the hurricane is worth it for that mileage. If I got 25mpg or more I could see it. It is adequate in this size truck but If you need to tow anything this engine would struggle for sure
@austindavis19849 ай бұрын
@@lucyfan1976 I've never driven a pentastar. However I was planning on getting one due to everyone saying the mpg is better, they are reliable and more reliable than the Hemi from what I have heard and it's good enough to do what I would need to do which is drive, haul stuff on occasion but not super heavy and not everyday. But in this case of the new ones, I would say the hurricane is worth getting over the pentastar due to the power and the mpg not being anywhere close to being significant enough to not get it. I'm interested in seeing the reliability long term of the hurricane and how long it may last. It seems like it will be a good engine. I'll miss the V8 but as long as the reliability is there with the hurricane then I will not complain.
