This is why everyone should carry an emergency kit in the car! I keep a tupperware tub in my trunk! I keep a heavy blanket, extra socks, spare pair of tennis shoes, extra gloves, a dry pair of clothing, a spare phone battery, water, and some dried food. You never know if you get stranded in the middle of nowhere! I also keep a lighter!!! I've gotten stranded before and almost lost my toes due to frostbite 🥶! Maybe you will never need these things but it's always better to have them! I hope the family gets answers 🙏

For what it's worth, his last name is pronounced Bendel-ee. I was his classmate at Burley High class of '85. We weren't friends per se, as we didn't hang out together outside of school, but we talked a lot at school. He was a very friendly guy. My best go out to his family. The Kimama desert is very remote and rugged in place. There are no trees and really no points of reference, so you can get turned around and lost fairly easily I would think. Also the lava rocks are very sharp and can be tough to walk in. If you sprain or break an ankle, it could be very difficult to get back to safety. I think the broken truck window is strange. If it was a stranger who did it, they would have taken the shotgun.

Just to clarify, Ricky and I were good friends. We spent substantial time on the desert through the years. There are many points of reference from anywhere on the desert. Mountain peaks to the south, north, Kimama Butte rising above the desert floor. And Ricky knew this region well. My friend was a good man.

@ghammond3132I like how you used logic to say it could of been him who damaged the window. Does the area have mountain lions for sure? If not it’s possible he could of wandered off too far and died from exposure. Then again a mountain lion or scavengers could of eaten his remains afterwards. If his remains were eaten the chances of him would drastically drop as I’m not sure there would be anything left

I lean towards the logical and simplest explanation. He got lost and succumbed to the elements. I recall a young lady that jogged the same route suddenly vanished. There were search teams and nothing found. A year or so later a hiker stumbled upon her remains. She fell and broke her leg in two or three places and fell down into a odd culvert. Not every disappearance is a criminal conspiracy. Many are just ridiculous dumb happenstance.

think about this though, look at the search maps he made it 12 miles down that road to drop off the beer bottles and its pretty much a straight shot back...why would his shoe be found so close to the truck if he had supposedly made it that far 24 round trip miles IF he made it back to the truck...unless he had another shoe i just cant see him making this journey with just one on and without his jacket.

Items such as gloves found at several differing points along the road may point to hypothermia. As you get colder your sense of body heating doesn't work, you imagine you are hot and you start to strip off clothes. I live and work in the bush in western Canada where it gets cold and I take precautions.. Anytime you drive out in the country anywhere you shouldn't rely on only your vehicle and your phone. Tell people where you are headed before you set out. Have an old sleeping bag, pillow, warm coat, hat, gloves, etc. and a bag of food/water that you leave in the truck. Plus flashlite, headlamp, extra batteries, fire starting kit, etc. Then wait out the nite in your vehicle and search for help in the daylight. Or if weather gets really bad the gear/food allows you to stay safe in the truck for a few days until you get found.

Honestly- seems potentially more likely he might have put those items there, it just seems too intentional... I wonder if maybe he was suicidal but maybe wanted it too not look like that. The fact that he also seemed "happier" than normal that day according to his mom fits with suicide since people often once they make the decison that they are 'going to do it' become seemingly extremely happy& talkative to family& friends etc

Is it possible due to his criminal convictions Richard agreed to be an informant for police. Maybe things reached the tipping point and Richard had to be moved from the area. It is known that police take people into hiding giving them new names and lives. Sadly this does involve people never getting to say goodbye to their families and loved ones or even seeing them again as it too dangerous. It is possible the truck was staged this way and his items dropped to help in the theory of him missing and eventually the files become suddenly lost. Keep up the good work steven love your podcasts keep them coming 👍👍

I agree. Why would the damage happen to the battery? If an animal attack took place, that might explain why the window was broken. Perhaps he shot it out, aiming at a mountain lion. A mountain lion is not going to smash a battery. For me, that is the weirdest aspect to this disappearance.

The two oddities about this case that stand out are (1) the shotgun being left in the truck and (2) the decision to walk to Carey versus backtracking to Kimama. One would think he would want to take the shotgun with him if he was going to be walking a long distance in a remote area. Occam's Razor would suggest he was probably intoxicated and was overcome by the elements.

🇬🇧 After reading the comments & hearing the evidence, i think there is alot that hasnt been disclosed! The police seem to know more about this case than they want to say. I also think that the idea that Richard may have been supplying L.E. info is possible, but in a place with such a small population there doesnt seem to be such a drugs or illicit alcohol problem to warrant such a collection of evidence. If it had been a big city then i could understand if Richard had been co-ersed into supplying LE info on drugs etc but in such a small town??? The thing that gets me is, the fact his window was smashed, it takes alot of power to smash a car window, unless the car battery was used then evidence would have shown if this was the case, i cant see Richard doing that himself, why would he? It wasnt an old junk truck, he kept up his truck payments so why smash his window? Unless it was a clue? The fact his beloved fathers shotgun was still with the truck also bothers me. This whole case doesnt make sense! Its as if someone tried to muddy the scene for whatever reason The discarded items of clothing Along the road away from Richards truck The battery broken, but i think maybe Richard could have deliberately placed the battery upside down as a clue, if he was mechanically minded, he'd think by doing this it would raise alarm bells as it WOULDNT be something he would do. Then this pretty pathetic search attempt for him, there werent many people involved & it was called off quickly This info the police discovered ? Was it to do with something they found in the search? Why did his mum & girlfriend feel there was something off with the police info? Too many things just dont make sense! Too many "clues" are just way out there! I do think Richard is dead, i think the police know about it but dont want to inform his loved ones because the circumstances were not pleasant or because they were shielding some LE involvement. I think his body is buried out there & wont ever be found & The evidence was deliberately scattered about in a hurried & Not credible way. Its sad this young man will never be able to continue his life & the perpetrators of his demise never brought to justice. One last thing I still believe that sometimes against all odds, the truth will emerge, who knows if his remains will be uncovered & evidence to show how he died? All is possible Thank you for a very intriguing case Regards 🇬🇧👧

ahh yes its upside down but i think maybe Richard could have deliberately placed the battery upside down as a clue, if he was mechanically minded, he'd think by doing this it would raise alarm bells as it WOULDNT be something he would do now that you said this now take the DNA fingerprint and then test it in a lab then follow the evidence leading to his body plus they can use a drone to find his body now.

The battery was in his truck when he called his mom because he used the big suitcase car phone. Sometimes people who are experienced in the outdoors know things others don’t. I think this is why the battery was messed with.. you can in a bad situation, use a car battery to make a spark to try and start a fire.. it’s just a thought. But if I was stranded at night, in the desert and the temperature drop and the snow, I definitely would have tried to use the battery for making a fire…

Forget the gun! What makes you know it's foul play, 1st a window broken on the truck. 2. A battery turned upside down. Here is my theory, Richard marked the area and came back to his truck and waited. He sat in the truck but someone came in another vehicle. They got out and approached his truck and told him to get out. He refused. They opened his hood and turned the battery upside down. He still stayed in the truck. They then broke the window and he got out knowing he would have to fight. They grabbed him and he had his gloves the whole time. They put him in their car or truck and drove while holding him and trying to somehow scare him by dragging him. He lost his shoes and the glove was torn because he put his hand to the ground to prevent his head being scraped on the ground. Now do I think he's alive? No. I think they killed him. My guess is them dumping his body up there or over a ravine or cliff? I don't think he's buried because they didn't clean up the glass broken, pick up his items that fell out. I would search a bit further from where they found the glove. In any event, it's such a sad case.

I personally believe that when he began getting into trouble for his weed use and distribution. Law enforcement flipped him and he became an informant. Although his punishment for that Crime seems excessive given it was only weed.(paying back all those fines including for the use) of a public defender and the fact that even though on parole he was never rearrested for any of the infractions afterwards , and there were plenty. It’s possible that his crew learned of his informant status & That he was possibly feeding L.E information regarding their activities causing his situation to happen. They tampered with the battery causing the truck to not start (the call To his mother later revealed he thought someone had done something to it) He was in the truck waiting for help when they/he approached the truck and broke his glass window to drag and or carry him out because he wouldn’t open the door. They staged his shoe and gloves to make it appear he may have left of his own accord. They then killed and buried him elsewhere. The sheriffs Dept. Isn’t likely to divulge that information even to his family therefore they aren’t going to have much to say concerning the case and anything they may have found especially if it would disclose that information. I think it’s time for the Dept. To come clean with his family on what they know. What they believe happened to him etc. of course that may lead to legal action against them for not protecting their son and so on so I’m doubtful they will ever come clean surrounding this disappearance. I wish his mother peace and that the truth will eventually come to light. God Bless. (Afterthought) I also don’t believe he was drinking at all. I think those cans happened to be there and didn’t belong to him at all.

I think he went out there to hunt as he said, got some beers along the way to take back home afterwards. He didn't need another dui. The battery dies. He has a few beers trying to fix the truck. It's no good. He calls his mother as obviously he can't call any authorities after drinking, then thinks he might as well get good and drink seeing as he's getting a ride home. Increasingly angry, he's like "pos truck" and hurls the battery at the window and tosses it. He goes to make a mark of empty cans. Nature calls but he doesn't want to miss his ride so he wanders to a higher spot to see them coming. And sadly that's how I see him, wandering off drunk and getting disoriented, cursing his bad run of luck.

You mentioned he had some drug distribution charges. And legal issues all seemed to be small stuff and as if the police targeted him over a short period of time. I wonder if the police are dirty with local drug dealing and this young man got on the wrong side of them somehow. They harrassed him for awhile but then decided he had to be removed. They would have what it takes to knock the window out (a truncheon) and disabled his battery. Then when he came back and was stuck, made his call home, they came out of hiding and took him off for whatever reason. They figured a cursory search and everyone would assume he was dead by exposure so his murder was covered. They threw his personal effects out of a moving car as they drove, or the items were never lost to start with - it was just "reported" they were found along the road. I just don't see this young man, with a gun and a truck, walking away from his gun and truck. Anybody would know how important it was to stay and shelter in place in the truck and to keep his gun with him. I feel like it has to be foul play. If he was so drunk, or high, he would have stumbled off but he wouldn't have gotten so far as to not be found. But if he was in a reasonable state of mind, he wouldn't leave his truck and gun.

Should have phoned Police when he initially couldn't describe his location. It's obviously absolute poppycock that he disappeared of his deliberate own accord and certainly a broken upside down battery , smashed window and leaving gun and coat behind surely immediately implies foul play such that it should be treated as an abduction or murder someone could have fitted his vehicle with a tracker. Someone might have taken him back to his truck trying to start it then slugged him or abduct him at gunpoint. Drunks are often found in waterways but why go out there to drink???

Okay so if you check out the search maps it shows where they found the items like the shoe and the gloves. as well as the beer bottles...the beer bottles were 12 miles one way down the road at least so he walked at least a few hours to the spot where the beer bottles were placed ...if he made if there i would assume he still had his shoes on...unless he had another pair with him...the shotgun, jacket and shoe kind of makes me think he made it back to or near the truck that night after walking to drop the bottles off..strange case no doubt...

Unless some of the details are incorrect, this is truly who done it. Did he lose his car keys or something hence why the window was broken? Why was his gun and jacket found in the truck. He must have had both the shotgun and jacket on when he went to leave the beer cans for markers you'll think? Only thing I can think of is maybe he was ambushed while sitting in his truck waiting for his mom. But if he had a shotgun with him inside the truck, he would have gripped up ready to shoot when the window was smashed? Strange. Also, I don't know too many hunters who go anywhere without their gun, or jacket. in the wilderness at that. Unless he was with someone he trusted who maybe had a vehicle he got into, and they left the area.

The punishments for marijuana delivery seem excessive for that particular crime. It’s a blessing both medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in some states. I truly wish all 50 would get with the program. There must have been bigger fish for Idaho police to fry than a marijuana supplier.

No evidence of another person with him. (Check beer can dna). There's 2 kinds of people when car breaks down. Those that call for help immediately and those that try to fix the problem before calling for help. They won't call until they feel desperate. He seems to be the type to fix his own problems first as evidenced by him messing with the battery, Could he have already been walking for a LONG TIME before he reached out for help? We know he left a "marker" for his mom (beer cans) the car could be another marker, so was the shoe another marker? Would we find another shoe several miles ahead? Seems dumb to remove shoes as marker, but if they were new and hurting anyway..maybe
@LuisaD93
@LuisaD93 2 жыл бұрын
I think others did that to his car battery causing the car not to start(his call to his mother, later indicated that he thought) someone had messed with his truck. I think he was in his truck waiting for help when he was approached by the person or persons responsible for that and they broke his driver side door glass to get to him because he refused to open the door. They took him and dragged or carried him to a car waiting then planted the shoe then gloves to make it appear that he possibly left on his own accord. They killed him & buried elsewhere .

@@LuisaD93 I forgot about the broken window. He may have locked his keys in the car by accident. This guy has been hunting all his life so he’d know if he was lost to stay put in his truck. I’m sure he had beer with him to drink a few either on the way there, maybe after or both. This guy was a mechanic so no way he accidentally turned the battery over. That’s not some easy thing to do. My guess is somebody sabotaged his truck & he probably knew that hints the worried voice his mother heard. It’s odd how the police completely shifted when the glove & shoe was found. I’d be curious to see if there are similar cases in the surrounding area. Throwing something & busting out the window is a good way to cause a diversion to someone who has a shotgun in the truck. If there are similar cases out there then it won’t shock me to find out that there’s someone out there taking out hunters then making a scene look like he was lost

Searches several days, misses things they then find days into the search they should've found before, then goes "Welp, that's it, let's wrap it up folks" The more I listen to these the more I think a 6 year old could do the job of some police departments... Edit- haaaaang on. The meth thing just made me think of something: paranoia and mood alterations are hallmarks of drugs like meth. Someone that's an experienced outdoorsman gets lost, is worried someone's out there, and on top of that is smashing up their own car? Then wanders off into the night? Not too far fetched, no?

Why not use a physic many people have with the truth coming to surface better to take a chance than seeing his case just go cold. If it was foul play it would have to be someone who knew the area , and someone who knew he was there how many people would be in a remote area at the same time

One odd case...the crime scene doesn't make sense. The car, windows smashed, battery upside down, his jacket left in the car on a snowy night, his shoe, glove and being found spread out along the road going south tells me he was leaving some sorta trail. But leaving behind a jacket, a shoe and a glove isn't something you want to leave behind on a snowy night. Unless they were spare coat and shoes. I highly doubt he was going hunting...I suspect he owed someone something and was making a getaway. I think he needed a gun for protection not for hunting. And who ever he was running from caught up with him..
