20ft Tide Surge Causes TIDAL BORE in Severn River, England

The Severn River Tidal Bore is one of the novelty wonders of the world. Multiple times a year the high tide charges in from the ocean and with a 9 meter swing it has enough momentum & strength to create a surfable wave at the front of the tide. There's a few Severn locals who have been riding this dreamer since the 1980's. The thing about a tidal wave is that it takes 6 hours, on any given day, for the tide to come in or go out or for the tide to switch. That means, technically, this wave is pushing up the river for 6 hours. All of this equates to very long rides & a lot of surfing. Back in the 1970 I used to water ski on the Severn down by the first Severn Bridge, using the old ferry slipway to launch the boats. For fun two of us were going to ski the bore with the boats in front of the wave and us on the crest or behind. Sadly, me boat got engine trouble, so I didn't even make the spot. But the other guy did and rode as planned, got some great footage. We would also ski down to Bristol or up the Wye to Tintern, even did Boxing Day skis and the Ferry Boat Hotel supplied us with hot showers and hot toddies afterwards.

I remember way back in the 60's when Surfer Magazine first mentioned The Bore. Rodney Sumpter was the first Brit surfer I ever knew of and he was featured in the article.
