I saw the commercial 30" Toro and ExMark in my dealer today. I started drooling and thought I would do some research. In March, 2016 you loved them and Jan, 2017 you sell them. I bought my 21" Honda HRC216HXA in 2009 and it still runs and looks like new 10 years later. Other than normal maintenance oil changes, blade sharpening, filter cleaning, change trans fluid, lube cables, replacing the rear plastic guard/shield, replace spark plug, and monitor idle and max governed rpm settings ... there have been no repairs required. I think you have convinced me to keep my HRC.

We love our Toro Timemasters even with the few issues we had on the first model we bought. We just bought a new 22" Toro StandandStow unit with a 190cc and it does great. The Timemasters are so much lighter then the heavier commercial units and the Briggs and Stratton's have not been an issue for us. The timemaster makes our jobs go much faster for sure. Jobs that were 30 minutes are now finished in about 15 mins. Crazy. Good video.

Downhill yard-edge trimming requiring you to pull the mower up eliminates the 30", and even some 21s. I use an old snapper manual push for this. It weighs 80 pounds and the 3.5HP engine returns excellent quality cut. Also, the engine displacement on the 30" timemaster @ 190cc seems small and the commercial versions are even smaller. I'm referring to modern motors with similar technology. There are several 21s with 190cc engines; Husqvarna sells one with a Honda 190 with overhead cam design, Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work.

Great video. You pretty much nailed it. I started with a 21" Toro commercial. I went with a new 30" Exmark. In the beginning it was great. Started saving A LOT of time. But things quickly went south. Since I bought it when they first came out I had a transmission problem. It was fine because it got replaced within 3 days covered under warranty. But with less then 100 hours I have replaced the BBC cable twice and the self propelled cable twice. Both idler pulleys on the deck went out. It bags good. But, if the grass is wet at all you cant get a full bag out. As you can tell I wasn't impressed anymore. I have since sold it and went back to a Toro 21" and honestly i couldn't be happier. It might take me 5 minutes longer but on dry yards. But, I have found the 21" is faster on the wet ones.

I PURCHASED THE EXMARK MODEL FOR HOMEOWNER USE: I bought the 30" Exmark in the Spring of 2017. It was the most recent updated version of the 30" walk behind. I have Bermuda grass and not a huge yard to mow. I wanted a great cutting mower and one that saved a bit of time compared to a 22" homeowner mower sold everywhere in town. I had a 22" Toro self-pace prior to this purchase. No comparison. This Exmark is the real deal. It cuts beautifully, has a strong Kawasaki engine and those older issues of transmissions and belt stretching haven't been any issues with this newest model. I was cutting my lawn at 3" height last year (2017) and it handled it like nobody's business. The only time I had clippings on the grass is when the bag was filled to the max. Exmark has a better and larger catch bag than previous model years. I will mention that you need to open the belt/pulley door guard occasionally to clean out any clippings that have accumulated inside there. Allowing this to build up in there over time may result in belt or pulley wear faster than normal. Operator type daily/weekly maintenance should be done anyway so don't forget this location. I have started my 2nd season with this yard beast and it's working flawlessly and is making my yard look way better than the neighbors who are using lawn care companies that use Walkers etc to mow their yard with nowhere near the finish results I'm achieving. I cross cut the lawn so it stripes it and they've told the Walker operators to cut their lawns at an angle or cross pattern and still can't compete. I highly recommend this newer version of the Exmark 30" walk behind for your lawn mowing needs. My lawn looks like a green at the golf course and the even cut this mower provides make your lawn so smooth and even like it's a rug and not grass. Proper lawn care aids in the look as well. I hope this helps out

My only real complaint is the clumping in thick wet grass. Also the paint on the bottom of the deck is already peeling off. You do a great job giving thorough pros and cons.
@WJCTechyman8 жыл бұрын
All I can suggest is since the paint is coming off, use undercoating spray as it's more durable than Toro's painting process. I can still see Toro mowers all over the place where the paint comes off in sheets.

Great video. I went with the Honda Commercial push mower. I use if for residential purposes, but on large yard with a lot of trees. It sounds like the reviewer really loves his 30inch mowers though. The main reason I went with the Honda was for the drive shaft based drive. I usually don't bag my grass, but with the roto-stop and the fine cut bagging didn't add too much time.
@25-88 жыл бұрын
hey, I didn't really understand your last few sentences. Does it bag so good that you didn't notice it and didn't mind it at all you mean, since you don't like bagging? Just asking becsude I'd love to see anyone upload any videos of the hrc216hxa bagging and emptying the bag to see how well it does. I mow a lot of mid size properties and only bag my weekly nice lawns and I'm thinking about getting the honda however I'm very afraid of the weight being a little too much and leaving possible ruts. is this an issue for you on your residential properties or can you upload some videos? I'd really appreciate it.

+The Prodigal Son I have the predecessors to the Honda HRC2163HXC (American version being the HRC216HXA, same machine, different numbers for some strange reason) One being the HRA214SX Steel Deck, 2 speed transmission and HR214SX, same as the steel deck only with aluminum deck and the speed selector is on the handle as opposed to down by the engine. I've never had problems scraping my hands as the video states. What I do to rectify that when bordering walls and fences is I hold the handle and control bars with one of my hands while I walk to the side of the machine like what one does with a roto tiller. If there is too much to run into, I gear the trans down to the slow speed (Honda commercial mowers have hydrostatic transmissions with nine "clicks") The Honda commercial mowers have shaft drive transmissions while most everything on the market has belt drive. Honda mowers also have true blade brake clutches (Roto-Stop) while the time masters probably use belts...again. Honda mowers, unlike the side discharge on the time master units are side discharge, but the deck is closer to the edges as you don't have a chute that suspends the deck six inches from a wall or fence. Clipping dispersal is also better on a Honda as it sprays the clippings evenly over the lawn unlike the other makes. Side discharge is an option unlike the mulching plug with the Honda commercial series. Honda mowers have a "high vacuum" deck which works well for bagging and side discharge. I usually like the fact that when bagging, leaves and grass are usually pulled into the mower like it is vacuumed, in fact, I use my baggers in the fall to collect leaves. As the video states, the wider the deck, the less time at a job, however I use the Honda on some lawns as a "trimmer mower" and use my lawn tractor for the rest, thus the 42" deck beats 30" any day. I'm not sure if it's worth spending the money on a Time Master-style machine or get a lawn tractor for about the same with a larger deck. The other plus is with a lawn tractor or a sub-compact utility tractor like the Kubota BX series is you can potentially get more use out of it over an annum (year) over a dedicated lawn mower. The other option is try to find a walk behind tractor with a large mower deck like a BCS or if you don't plan on using it that much for the amount of money but you want to do other tasks with it, maybe a Troy-Bilt Flex system.

+WJCTechyman thanks for all of your comment, I really appreciate the time you took to write it. I ended up purchasing the hrc216hxa 2015model they had at my nearest local dealer for $1,140 without tax. I thought it was a good buy since the competition had it for $1,150-1200. I really like the mower been having it for two weeks now and just did my first oil change. I just have one issue and that is maneuvering in small lawns, it seems a bit frustrating to almost feel better just pushing it without the clutch in tight areas. I know this is because of the weight, but I will trade that with the amount of grass it collects like you said because of its design, I'm truly impressed and love how it has manhandled my bi weekly yards with no bogging even on wet grass. Can you give some tips on maneuvering? I'm so used to the old late 90's Toro's but with honda engines too, they are very reliable and always start on the first pull. Also, when I sweat, it seems to fall on the blade lever and clutch, I notice it becomes slippery and my left hand seems a little fatigue when holding the blade lever, I seen some videos where people have some padding sort of bubble shape around them. It seems to make sense because I been pretty harsh when grappling it and I noticed right away the first two days it scratched on the bars.
@WJCTechyman8 жыл бұрын
+The Prodigal Son Hmm...Small lawns with this machine (or at least with my HR(A)214SX) can be awkward, I usually do a back and forth motion like operating a vacuum cleaner. I usually cannot do the concentric spiral or striping around this kind of yard due to a number of objects like furniture so I take my time. I wonder, can you pull the commercial mower hst backwards like I can with my two speed transmission? I would imagine this is possible but I haven't used one of those specific machines before.
@WJCTechyman8 жыл бұрын
+The Prodigal Son I forgot to comment about the sweat issue. Since my mowers are 25+ years old, I haven't had an issue with this and the fact that I don't use the machines as heavily as you do, but you may be able to get away with adding some padding like some cyclists wrap around their road bike handles or what people add to the steering wheels of their cars but I don't know how much clearance and play the hydrostat and roto-stop levers will require. I looked at the propulsion engage lever on a commerial Honda with an HST seems to somehow link up with the speed control next to the throttle control. On my older machines, there's a separate cable for the propel lever from the cable that selects between the two speeds. The Roto-Stop lever is of a different design to mine as well as on my machine. The roto-stop lever on the newer machines is full length and it seems when you push the little yellow button it engages a metal bracket that the cable is attached and when pushing it forward it pulls said bracket. With mine, the orange button raises a catch hook that unlocks the whole assembly so that then I can engage the blade.

I think you nailed it. I have both the exmark30s, and the Honda HRC216. Here are a few adds; Exmark 30 w/kawi engine has an oil filter, Honda doesn't. On the flip side, the Honda engine gets my nod for slightly better reliability, and the air filter is a better design on the Honda. The exmark with kawi engine air filter set up, although quick/easy to change, doesn't do as good a job at filtering IMO. Both mowers are built like tanks. The Honda required less maintenance as well. To explain, there are no belt tensions to adjust. With the exmark 30, you will have to adjust the blade engagement and drive cables from time to time, and change the belts, primarily the blade engagement belt. Over time we notice that we loose blade speed in thicker grass even after adjusting the cable, and it appears that the belt is slipping within the pulleys instead of grabbing in the V. It will sound similar to the engine bogging, but its the belt slippage causing the blades to slow down. Like you, I prefer to run the exmark 30's for the speed, but there aint NO WAY im selling my Honda. Its the perfect back up mower. One other note about the Honda; it can cut at a lower height than the exmark 30 from what we have noticed. The exmark 30 when set to the lowest wheel position on the front and back will sometimes cause problems on inconsistent lawns, and drag. Because the 21 has a smaller footprint overall, you can cut at a lower height without "dragging" the deck when the lawns are uneven and/or not level. With all I have said let me finish with this; I would not rely on one Exmark30 as my ONLY mower. The reliability hasn't been as good as the Honda. I have two exmark 30's, so its not too big a problem if one goes down. With either of these mowers, I would suggest buying a back up, even if its just a toro super recycler or something like that as a back up! Last comment; if I was just mowing my own lawn, and wasn't concerned with speed, (assuming its for a smaller sized yard) I would buy the Honda HRC 216! Its a pleasure to mow with and the trans/speed control is better especially if you want to move slow and steady! For business, time is money, so the exmarks can get the vote for that application. Wow...I think this is my longest comment on youtube so far!

I liked the Toro mowers I have had over the years, but I have always gotten a better cut with my Hondas than Toros at a lower setting. Not as much scalping as the Toros if that makes any sense for machines designed by a manufacturer known for golf course machines. I even had a Toro 26626 with a 4 stroke Suzuki that had an anti-scalp plate on the blade and it still scalped the lawn!

Don't waste your money on the Honda mowers either, the engines are fine, mowers suck. World's smallest baggers, the blade clutch system is garbage as well. For being sold as a commercial mower Honda sure fell short on the bagger size, and the blade clutch system on the BBS models is horrible, it does nothing but cause the mower to bog down in areas a standard mower would not have a problem with. Honda you just pay for the name brand, the mower is far from worth the selling price. The Exmark is the pro version of the Toro, tons of issues related to those 30" mowers and for the price its not worth it.

+William Todd (williamtodd) I'm undecided between the 21" exmark with the honda engine and the honda hrc216. My only complaints/worries for the honda is the excess weight, in TX the st. Augustine can rut easy especially since ppl mostly water here in the morning or night and the moisture just doesn't dry fast enough and with my old Toros it still leaves ruts sometimes so I can't imagine the horror if I put a heavy honda? Also I like Hondas are easier to repair, and is $50 cheaper. The exmarks I like because of its wheels adjustments, clutch is easier imo, I like the bagging with no lid and also reinforced edge pads to protect the corners. I don't like how it doesn't have BBC, I'm undecided. Help
@wildbill23c8 жыл бұрын
The Prodigal Son Skip the BBC crap, just buy a simple FWD or RWD mower and you'll be fine. There used to be a channel around where he mowed a lot of lawns with a $300 FWD mower...no need to spend a ton of money on them, keep the blade sharp, change the oil and it will last a long time. If you are worried about weight you'll want a regular 21" walk behind anyhow, skip all the nonsense fancy features and name badges. The fancier the machine the heavier they will be typically, the Honda will be pretty dang heavy due to the deck design which from experience plug up way too easily, the blade clutch was terrible it would bog down in grass that wouldn't phase my $150 push mower, had the world's smallest bagger for Honda trying to claim they are "Commercial". I'd just buy a regular FWD or RWD mower depending on the conditions you mow in and forget all the Honda and Exmark hype.

The Honda hrc216hxa is the best 21" mower period. I live in Seattle and it rains a ton, you have to be able to cut wet grass. I never mulch anything, only bag. Mulching in Seattle will leave a huge mess the grass is way thick and would leave clumps everywhere. The bagging ability on the HRC is second to none. Honda is what makes a commercial operator the most money.

For me personally, I think a 30 inch deck combined with a 6 hp engine is just too underpowered. But that's just me. I'm having issues with mine ALWAYS leaving uncut grass even if I do a 50% overlapping pass. Full mulch mode at 2.5" or 3" cut height. If it didn't do this, I'd be completely in love with it.
@troytinkham55865 жыл бұрын
David....happens to me all the time. I look at my neighbors lawns with their Husky and Lawnboys and am jealous on the cut quality. I've done new blades/resharpened. Nothing helps and it's irritating especially because I bought the plastic deck, but after 3 years of using it....well it's time to move on.
@gls38943 жыл бұрын
Ive never had this issue with my HRX 217. Mine , hands down the best cut quality of any mower I own. Your rpm may be low and/or spindle problem. Max no load on HRX is 3100 rpm. You may also want to check that the Versa mow is actually sealed properly when on full mulch. Even with a small opening will alter the lift.

My top 2 21" walkbehind I have used: The John Deere 14SB (1993 Model) and Honda HRX2174HYA (2014 Model) Champion: JD 14SB! Why: The 14SB was built like a tank. 23 years later it still kicks @$$ and has outlived the other 4 John Deere's I have had. Like the TORO's (which I have used) your hands are positioned right in the middle when using the mower and are less likely to get hit by a branch or get scraped by a concrete/stone wall. The Honda HRX is pretty darn close to the 14SB though! Both machines bag and mulch grass near the same with plenty of power. I find that around my area with the types of grass that the Honda acutally mulches clippings better than the TORO'S, which is what they're (TORO) are know for! I agree that on the Honda, positioning of hands makes it easier to scrape them up and bulkier to turn to get the straight line and stripe. I let you know if the Honda becomes the top dog in 23 years when the 14SB is 46 yrs old and still plugging along!
@juvieguy8 жыл бұрын
+Steven B The 14SB is a beast! I retired mine two years ago after more than 20 years service. I replaced the deck from a used parts mower, the transmission was replaced a few years ago, wheels several times but the engine was original. I really abused that thing, changed the oil very infrequently, mowed over rough ground, etc. It was a slow starter in the spring, but once started it wouldn't stop! I replaced it with a Honda HRX which I really love.
@stevenb69848 жыл бұрын
+juvieguy I know! Last september, I purchased a 1994 14SE with a busted deck but good engine and transmission to use as parts for the 14SB. Mine is a 1993 with the Kawasaki 5.0 hp FC-150V-CS00 and the Ogura Blade Brake Clutch. Its sorta an oddball because the engine was made in Japan. I actually had the engine base replaced last year (yeah, wont be doing that again $$$) after it cracked when changing oil. Did your 14SB have the Warner BBC or the Ogura BBC? Since 2008, mine makes a screechy windy like noise which I think it needs to be replaced. But then I was thinking it might be the top engine bearing, but I don't think it would have lasted this long like that?

I like the 21, I don't use push mowers a lot, I know my Honda will mulch 6 inches of grass in one pass and it was crabgrass so thick and wet. and also better on hills. and cost of course got mine 100$ off.

Thanks for the info. I can't decide between the 30" Toro Timemaster or a self propelled standard width mower. Is the extra width really worth the cost and is the new 2017 Toro better than the previous models that had so many transmission problems. I also have a somewhat hilly yard, not crazy but inclined. Would I be better off with a AWS standard width or is rear wheel just as good as AWD?
@CashensPowerwashing5 жыл бұрын
rear wheel drive in my opinion is the best. i have mowed hundreds of yards with my toro personal pace 22" recycler. it is a hell of a mower its the model with the tecumseh and electric start.

THE ONE THING (AND AN IMPORTANT ONE) YOU DIDN'T MENTION IS HOW WELL DID THEY CUT OR MORE SPECIFICALLY HOW EVEN THE CUT WAS. DID THE WIDE AND MORE HEAVILY WEIGHTED TIRES ON THE 30" IN. FLATTEN THE GRASS WHEN YOU CUT? THEN WHEN YOU DO YOUR OVERLAP CUT YOU WIND UP WITH AN UNEVEN CUT ONCE THE GRASS POPS BACK UP LATER. I'VE HEARD TWIN BLADE MOWERS USUALLY DON'T CUT AS WELL AS A SINGLE BLADE.

I have 21 commercial John mower that you make the front wheels swivel I only used it once and I can't get the spark plug off of it to replace it ... I might end up selling the John Deere for $300 because that's how much I paid for it

Is there a way to weight down the front of the Hondas?
@pauls34235 жыл бұрын
There are 3 ways ... 1. Don't bag grass just mulch. 2. Bag but empty it more often. 3. Put a sand bag on the front of the deck. Oops there's 4. He was talking about the Honda HRX217 with a light nexite deck...so you could get a heavy steel deck HRC216 which is a tank.

I've thrown in the towel on commercial push mowers at this point, I had 2 Exmark 30s that were nightmares, mine got to the point they would barley self propel and 2 hondas that were getting pretty dated. So I said screw it I didn't want to spend 5k on push mowers so I went and got 4 Troy-bilt tb360s, the drive system on them takes some getting used (exmark and toro have personal pace, mine did not but its similar if not the same system) and they don't have PTOs but other than that they are some of the nicest push mowers I have ever used, light fast and plenty strong. Those cost me just over $1500 iirc.

I've got a Toro 30" Timemaster and a Honda Model # 663030. The Honda is by far my go-to mower. Wasn't a huge fan of the amount of plastic at first compared to the model this newly redesigned engine replaced on the same model the years before that were mostly metal parts. But it's like with newer cars these days there's just simply going to be more uses with plastics as they've actually come a very long way and the plastic parts are well made. Makes the mower lighter for sure. Plus fewer issues with more metal parts rusting. I currently have the Toro Timemaster listed for sale. It starts first pull like it did on day one and I'm selling for $250.00 which is very cheap for this mower. It's just too heavy and in the way.
