It says something that a gentleman came out to thank you for slowing down. I’ve seen comments on a couple different social platforms saying that folk NOT slowing down when passing moored craft, is a problem found across many parts of the canal network.
@MyNarrowboatVenture3 жыл бұрын
I've been surprised at the speed some boats pass me when I'm moored up and I've even wanted to go out and have a moan, but they're too quick for me. Some say it's hirers but I don't believe you can generalise, some boaters just don't care.

Good Morning Alan. An interesting vlog as it always is from yourself. Some of the views as usual were stunning & the sound of the bird's is just beautiful. Funnily enough, I find the sound of the engine on your boat rather therapeutic. Altho u probably think differently listening to it all day. Absolutely love the manners & politeness u canal user's practice day in, day out. But I guess you'll always get the odd one's. Keep them coming Alan. Have a CTR (Cheese topped roll) for me. The cement sand bag wall looks like a recipe for a future problem to me. Whereas you with CRT have been using sandbags to support the side of the canal, this is being used as a supporting wall for garden extension with no secure footings other than the side of the canal. Hopefully the steel rods that they are using goes well down into the bank. Just my humble opinion. Great vlog. Regards AJ
@MyNarrowboatVenture3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, we don’t actually know what’s been used as a footing. The steel rods as well as going down through the bags may be used for lateral anchorage as well. Glad you enjoyed watching. Cheers

Evening Alan, another interesting vlog, you certainly have met some lovely people on your Cosgrove odyssey, and what seem to be abundantly clear is the sense of "Community" that exists with Narrowboaters, although I am sure you have seen that not all Canal folk are pleasant, not sure how you will top the Cosgrove trip, although I have a feeling that you are already planning for another adventure in the near future, keep it up I say! @TimVirnig3 жыл бұрын
I've always wondered the average time for a lock to fill or empty. In your videos it's often edited so I wasn't sure. Is it long enough to take a quick "break" in the cabin or fix a cup of tea or do you have to stay alert at the tiller?
@MyNarrowboatVenture3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim. As a sole boater, you need to be alert and not making tea. One needs to keep a watchful eye on the boat in the lock, whether going up or down. In terms of travel time, 20 minutes is usually considered about right for each lock. So if you have three locks on your journey allow an hour just for those. Sometimes a lock is not ready for you to enter, you may need to fill or empty it. There may be someone in the lock exiting, no-one coming up, so you need to refill. There are so many possibilites. If a lock is ready for you then 10 to 15 minutes is possibe. As a sole boater, I've got to moor up and shut the gates, all takes time. With crew, someone else could do it, withouth the need for stopping. Hope that helps. Cheers
