Today I had my first service for my 2023 Tacoma TRD Off Road. They told me about the recall but said there is no fix right now. They said they are still working on a remedy. Wonderful.

Take a look at the video on my page, if there is no weld splatter on the end plate around the nuts you are good to go, I show the page for the Tacoma axle assembly with the torque specs and I show you the four nuts on the rear axle on my Tacoma.

I have a 2022 Barcelona red Tacoma SR5 V6, and I took it to the Toyota dealer regarding a recall letter. They checked it and replaced a nut and tightened the nuts to proper torque, they found no issues. It took about 3 hours total to complete. I like this Toyota dealership they're on the ball. My Truck was made in Mexico, and I haven't had any problems with it. I have 10200 miles on it now. 🛻 I lucked out getting this truck brand new during covid, and I love it. 🛻

They don’t use welds to assemble the rear end ? Let’s say the don’t weld in Mexico ( 🤦‍♂️)… shouldn’t they make sure the holes the bolts go in are not covered in slag from a weld ???

My 2023 TRD Sport is affected by the recall. I believe it’s all trim levels from 22-23’.

I've been around for more than 5 decades, so I've seen a few things. Toyota has great advertising and while they are pretty durable with the drive train the rest of the vehicle, trucks at least have always had problems. From rusted frames to poor paint jobs, breaking tie rods, axle shafts, warped beds after heavy use, electrical issues, and yes, axle problems. I wouldn't worry too much as this is just typical Toyota stuff, they do, however, tend to repair most breaks as long as they don't say it happened off road. Turns out off-roading a Tacoma voids the warranty who would have thought that. In the realm of compact trucks they are all as dependable as the next so it's your preference. Just don't abandon Japan because of issues you didn't expect, it's been happening for decades.

I got the recall for my 2022 SR 2.7l 4x2 Access Cab. So I'm pretty sure it's across the whole 2022 - 2023 line.

Have the same truck but 4x4, punched in my vin on the Toyota recall information site, says 0 no recall. Time will tell wait for the notice in the mail. My 22 Tacoma Sr access cab 2.7 I4 is paid off . Bummer all this because of sloppy welding. Think I dodged a bullet so far. Peace.....

I really appreciate this video. I own a 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition. I had heard about the recall, but could not find any info. about whether mine was one of the ones affected. The NTSA website which is responsible for recalls does not have this info. yet. Your recommendation about checking Toyota's website paid off. My Tacoma is affected, so I will definitely be monitoring when they come up with a remedy. Thanks -

This video really does not tell you much of anything, here is the deal, the axle manufacture installed a new design shield on their welding machine that welds the end plate to the axle tube. When that new design shied was installed it was not installed to the proper spec and that allowed weld splatter to get on the end plate that is welded to the end of the axle tube. If the weld splatter is on the flat surface of the end plate around the four axle retaining nuts then there may be weld splatter under the nuts allowing them to come loose and possibly fall off, that will allow the rear axle to slide out of the axle tube and could result in loss of brakes and a crash. Not every Tacoma was affected by this but Toyota and the axle manufacture do not know how many axles were affected so all Tacomas starting with build date 5/22 through the end of the 2023 model year run are included in the recall to check them. If you want to check it yourself look to see if there is any weld splatter on the end plate and around the four nuts that retain the axle. If that area is free of weld splatter you likely do not have any issues, I have a copy of the page for the Tacoma rear axle and it shows the torque spec for those axle retaining nuts to be 36Nm/27 ft lbs of torque. 36 Nm converts to 27 ft lbs of torque. I checked my 2023 Tacoma and the end plate has no weld splatter on it and the nuts are all tight when I checked them with a torque wrench. I have a video on my page showing the page with the torque specs and shows you the four nuts involved on the end of the axle tube.

I received the recall notice on my 23 SR5, stopped by I-75 Toyota in Lake City FL. They said they don't have the parts, and I should wait until I get a card with "Recall" in a red box. Driving back from Valdosta GA at 70(ish) on the interstate, it felt like the transmission was attempting to downshift but I did not lose any speed. The transmission fishes for the proper shift points all the time between starting off and 45. The engine is amazing, and passing kicks in like it's a turbo 6. As a guy with a long torso, it is still a challenge to get in and out of the truck, but Tacoma is still far and away the best mid-sized. I have to hand it to Ford and their Maverick effort, I know three owners and all are very satisfied, but they don't work with their trucks, or tow. Prior to this in Jan I cancelled the advanced order for the 24 due to continued delays. When I was in for the attempted recall, I got a in person look at the 24 and I think the back seat is actually smaller. It was just as difficult to get in and out of. With all of the problems that are being called out on KZbin, I'm glad I chose the last year of the 3rd gen. And then there's the cost premium of the 24. My best to all who do buy the new 24 and I wish them years of enjoyment and mechanical reliability.

just bought a brand new 2023 sr5 4x4 tacoma. it has 245 75/r16 firestone destination le2 with the dark rim. i find the truck sitting lower than i like.used to the 1500 ram i traded in.i find i have to tilt my head to get into the tacoma also not crazy about the dark rims.would like to switch the rims to a crome color and put on tires that will raise the truck without having to install a lift kit ....any suggestions ?

2023 Black Addition - Back passenger rear wheel locked-up @ 70 MPH. Dam near rolled the vehicle. Mine is a sitting at the dealership. Toyota has zero parts available to fix the axle. They gave me a rental at zero cost until the truck is fixed.

Agreed. One side of mine looks good and flush but the other side does have a bit of a gap. I'll wait until more info comes out and if there's just a bit of welding slag that needs ground down I'll do it myself. I hate dealership mechanics.

So after a bit more info coming out it is indeed those 4 bolts. It sounds like all they are going to do for the recall is torque them again to 33ft/lbs, unless they are so loose that damage was done, then they will do repairs. My truck only has 5k on it and they are still torqued properly so I'm just going to check them every now and again and call it good.

Question, the app did not say anything about my 2023 sr & said recalls are good and engine is healthy . The question is according to Google, only 500k (plus change) tacomas sold in 2022 and 2023. So that means 75 percent of tacomas will be affected by this b.s? Since they said 380k are being recalled.

Likely, they discovered the error somewhere in the building cycle for the 2023 models and corrected the problem. Therefore all trucks after a certain date would not need the repair. My Access cab was assembled in Mexico on 10/22. God knows when the axels were built.

Hopefully nothing bad will happen. I drove from Oregon to CA and just checked the bolts and they are there , not anywhere near loose. I just now I gotta check the bolts like I would a used car that burns oil untill the end of April lol..

@tomgregory5814 mine was built in sep 2023 and yes in mexico, well let me ask you this, bolts just don't get loose within a blink of an eye so should I just eye the bolts as the days go by? For example I counted 4 ridges on each bolt, as soon as it turns into 3 , go to dealer? Also how many miles does yours have, on the app did it say your car was affected or did it just say it's an issue in general?

As of now Toyota doesn't have a "fix" until early April. As of now, no crashes have been reported due to this recall. On a side note **whispers** "they want you to go for the 4th gen" lol
