6.8 SPC rules at close distance. Initial military fielding was very positive in urban areas, but out in the mountains was where it didn't do so well and that was probably what kept it from going further in the adoption process. 5.56 is adequate at the distances 6.8 was good for, provided you did your part as a shooter, and at significantly lower material cost and already in the production and supply chain. If you need more gun, 7.62 is also already available and not going to put additional strain on logistics.

@phillycheesetake10 күн бұрын
It's slept on because it has no external ballistic advantage over .223, and way more recoil. A 90gr .277 projectile has a lower sectional density than a 62gr .224. A 90gr 6mm has the SD of a 117gr .277. More recoil than a .22 or 6mm, less sectional density, lower BC, and no gain in trajectory at all. And necking it down didn't help, the .224valk was a flop. Idc what anyone says, the 6.8 spc beats the Grendel for hunting in anything shorter than a 22 inch barrel. The 6.8 spc is pretty amazing and horribly underrated. You can look up ballistic testing for it including auto glass and the 6.8 excels In a big way. 6.8 spc II, .338 spectre and .458 socom are IMHO the best conversion rounds for the AR-15 . 6.5 grendal is close . The 6.8 spc was originally designed for the 14.5 " m4 barrel and carbine gas system. The 16 " is standard as a commercial cartridge. A 115 grain Remington fmj should get in the area of 2800 fps In a 24" barrel and just over 2000 ft.lbs muzzle energy. There was for a long time 6.8 spc spec II " combat loads by a company called silver state armory. It was basically a +p version developed in tandem with Barrett using their m468 and gen 1 rec7. Unfortunately nosler bought the company out and immediately canceled the combat loads after selling their assets. In contrast to regular ammo, that 120 grain sst would get about 2850 fps from a 16 inch barrel. They and a 87 grain Barnes tac-x offering at 3100ish fps ,A 100 grainer at 3000ish fps and so forth. It's why we have a spec II chamber and 1/10 twist minimum with 1/11 being ideal . The downside of it is it's unusually sensitive to fast twist rates with standard 6 groove rifling. Even that was worked around when Bison and white oak made subsonic loads and a 1/7 twist barrel 2 (maybe it was 3 groove, its been years) groove barrel that could handle all loads. Sorry to rant, I'm a 6.8 spc fan man. Lol with my luck I'm sure if I lived the 6.5 grendal, .450 bushmaster and .300 whisper/blk ,they would all be on the fringes of extinction or proprietary and esoteric rounds .

I have 2 AR-15s. First one was chambered in 6.8 SPC. My dad and I didn't know what we were buying or looking for and just wanted an AR-15. The gun is a beast. It's my emergency hunting rifle, or if I for some reason need a beefy round. The main home defense AR-15 is the 223/556, just because the ammo is relatively cheap and easy to find. I was thinking of selling the 6.8 SPC, but after I found out it could be used for hunting larger game than a 5.56, I decided to keep it. Ammo is a little expensive and kind of hard to find, but I have a decent stock of it, and it's not my main practice rifle, so ammo isn't really a problem. Thanks for the vid Banana!

Glad to finally see someone acknowledge that box numbers on the 6.8 are from a 16" barrel while everything else is a 24". 6.8 is so underrated simply because it's not the best to shoot long range with, which It was never designed to. It was designed to increase lethality from short barrels at standard combat ranges and it does a great job at that. For a short, lightweight hunting rifle the 6.8 is superior out to 300 yards. By Jove, those plinked the ocean much more than my .22LR. MUCH more.

I have been with the 6.8 since the inception. Remington is the reason 6.8 didn't do as well as it should have. It was designed to kill stuff quickly out of the ar15 platform and it continues to deliver.

Great test! I appreciate you used the closest ammo comparison as possible! I wonder how much the 6.8SPC being a hunting bullet vs the match of the other 3 made the difference on the steel

I am not even interested in these calibers personally, but I watch your videos anyway. Want to see which ones get through the steel. lol

6.5 Grendel guy here: did someone say to try these at 1,000yds next time yet?

Been rockin' Grendel especially since PSA via AAC has been cranking out rounds...patiently waiting for them to start making SPC because 0.80/rd for milk toast S&B fmj isn't worth it to me.

If I needed another caliber in an AR-15 platform the 6.8 SPC is my likely choice.

Missed the 6.8, built 6.5 & 6mm. I just don't think I'm going after a 22arc. Great comparison though!

My first rifle I was going to build was a 6.8 Spc but at the time I couldn't afford the ammo so I did a 556 and later a 6.5G cause ammo was cheaper. I still want a 6.8spc though. Maybe this will be a good time to built one. :)

I've been trying to decide which new caliber I should build my new AR in. From this video it's looking like the 6.8 will be it. Thanks!

Lately my choice of firearm purchases is determined by ammo availability and price. Maybe do a video on a few handguns using one of the hot bear loads. See if you can stop old smokey from putting out your back yard camp fire before your beans, weenies and S'mores are all cooked

We clearly wanna see more 6.8spc content, maybe an SBR with ballistic gel and velocity tests would be awesome

It's interesting how similar these cartridges are. it seems to me that 6.8 came out just a bit ahead. I don't think it's enough of a difference to warrant switching but a new purchase is another matter.

"just a bit ahead" ? Did you not watch until the end? Holy smokes.

@@Renrondog Close up, the 6.8 rules. When stretching out the distance, the 6 and 6.5 will perform better. It all depends on application.

I’ve shot it once and have been convinced since the NGSW went to sig. I believe we should ditch 5.56 and take up the main weapon for all branches would be the Sig MCX LT using 6.8 SPC3 which would be a custom load from Sig using the new case technology of the stainless steel case head and increasing pressure to 80k.

I will stick with my 6.5 Grendel, ammo ammo and components are easier to find.

6.8 SPC II was sabotaged! The gun pimps pushed Valkyrie, 300 Blk, 6.5 Grendel when testing showed te 6.8 was the best all around cartridge. Even the new army round is 6.8. Different cartridge design but the caliber is the same. The 6.8 was simply not pimped because who designed it, and no former SOF guy was pimping the round, that is the only reason it never caught on.
@jefferytillis83098 күн бұрын
That. And it didn't help that Nosler bought Silver State Armory and pretty much squashed all the great work they had done with the cartridge. Add in Remington screwing up the submitted specs as another negative. I still love the cartridge and have two rifles chambering it. Along with thousands of rounds in my stash. I do also have two Grendels and a Valkyrie. Don't need the ARCs.
@WallyMerc063 күн бұрын
I'll always say that the 6.8 spc is the best modern military cartridge design.
@winstonsmiths24493 күн бұрын
@@WallyMerc06 Yeah, "they" just did NOT want this cartridge to succeed. Patent, profits etc, were not going to go to one of the big manufacturers. The did not find SOF types to pimp the cartridge.

The difference is countless vids of boar and deer being taken by 6.8 spc and 6.5 grendel. Look up 6 arc and you'll only see varmint hunting, look up 22 arc and you'll see hornady adverts
