I butchered for many years on a mobile slaughter truck in two different States and the gun we always used was the 22 magnum, it will drop the biggest bull instantly ( shot placement) and the 22 magnum is so versatile, if I had to choose just one caliber for all around hunting or a survival situation it would be the 22 magnum 👍😁

I have found the 22 WMR to be the perfect rimfire. I have recently used it to eliminate a nuisance groundhog at 75 yards. When called to help with a leg trapped deer, I grabbed the 2 WMR in case I needed to end the deer's suffering but was able to release her. My point is that with a gun safe full of choices, I seem to always end of up with the 22 WMR in my hands. No excessively loud gunshots to alarm the neighbors.

I agree with you, i think the 22 magnum is a great choice for many situations. You reminded me of a groundhog that was digging up holes all over my back lawn when i just moved into a new house. I used my 10/22 at the time to take him out from an upstairs window. i saw the furry critter popping his head up and down, it was about a 50 yard shot, i tried using a trap and poison for a few weeks but without any luck, but when i saw him in the furr i couldn't pass up using the rifle.

@@liljimitwofeatherz9735 22 wmr is a natural fit for lever actions. Proven performance. A lever action cycles manually in a similar fashion to a bolt action, just a more complex mechanical function. Where you run into problems with rimfire is with semi-auto firearms. You're not guaranteed to have a problem regularly, but rimfire is less reliable than centerfire ammo and therefore you'll have to clear the issue in a semi-auto gun. A bolt action, lever action or revolver can just be cycled and fired again with less time to clear the failure.

I have a Ruger 77/22M in .22 WMR with a laminated stock and battleship grey finished stainless steel. I have taken two bobcat with it and it has dropped both of them where they stood at 50 and 75 yards. I've taken rabbit, squirrel, crow, fox, raccoon, porcupine and woodchuck with it as well, and all were one shot kills. Here in NY's Catskill mountains, our coyotes run 40 pounds or more, so I have not used it to hunt yotes, but wouldn't hesitate to shoot one within 50 yards if given the chance. I bought it years ago when it was considered to be the best .22 WMR of any that were made. I think it may still be the best .22 WMR in the hunting fields today. It's a little on the heavy side, but is extremely accurate. It is one of the most expensive bolt action .22 WMR rifles out there, but unlike the one's you mentioned, I feel it IS worth the price.

Agreed DD, I Have been hunting with the .22 mag since 1985 , have had a Krico, CZ, Ruger,Anschutz and now shoot a sako quad. Have shot Bunnies out to 180yds and frequently out to 150yds using Rem 40gn Jhps. Have made a few vids with Bunnies taken at between 100 and 150yds on my channel. After all these years Im still not convinced the HMR is better as an all round game getter than the .22mag. and have never bought one. For bowling over Bunnies and Foxes past 100 consistently I put my money on the .22mag. The HMR is more accurate( not by much, with no wind)and has a flatter trajectory but for sheer knock down kinetic energy past 100 you can't beat the .22mag. It was designed as a hunting round which it does perfectly.

I regularly shoot Texas wild boars with a savage 17hmr and 22agnum out to 250 yards and get successful headshots every time, albeit the 17 can go out to 350 yards cuz my rifle is so accurate with a superb trigger and free floated barrel. My AR can engage hogs using 69 grain pointed soft point rounds to 800 yards with the right high magnification optics and superb clarity. Especially IR scopes at night with no wind. Excellent video. I appreciate your honest impressions of the firearms you discuss. In my earlier days (I'm 70 now) I used to have a Ruger Super Single Six in 22 Magnum that I carried varmint hunting along with a Browning BPR in 22 Magnum. I loved the Browning pump because it had a higher capacity tube feed. And the French walnut was beautiful. However, back then 22 Magnum ammo was $5.00/ box and I bought a Remington Varminter in 22/250 caliber that I could reload cheaper so I ended up selling the 22 magnums. My current favorite is a Savage B17 G in 17 HMR. I must say when it comes to accuracy in a rimfire you can't beat the 17 HMR. Although it may not have the energy of the 22 Magnum shot placement allows hitting the vital area consistently for humane kills and proper head shots will not destroy any meat.

I love all three of these calibers. I used to use the little Maggie for most things, but I mostly use the 22 LR and the 17 HMR these days. But, I do believe the 22 magnum is the more versatile cartridge. In the old days we used the 22 WRF in our 22 magnums for less pelt damage too. That loading makes its more similar to a high velocity 22 LR. Unfortunately, it’s 18 dollars a box now. That’s expensive 22 LR performance. But, it is available and gives your 22 Mag even more versatility. The 22 mag is also a capable little friend in a pistol or derringer, which I sometimes carry around in the woods or around the property loaded with a combo of snake shot and hollow points. Its Just a great little cartridge. Thanks for the video.

I always use iron sights and call my predators in to “bow” range. That’s what I love to do and I don’t need long range rifles for that. (Even though I have those too).

I got a Krico (Kriegeskorte&Co in Stuttgart, Germany) bolt action in 22 Mag. when I was 16 years old and I still like it very much. Going beyond 100yards though I noticed the groups really opening up. What happens to the 22 LR High Velocity ammo must happen to the 22 Mag. just a little distance further out. Once their speed drops below the sound barrier, they loose some accuracy. My groups open from 1 MOA at 100 yards to about 3 MOA at 150 yards. By the way I am a BC trapline owner for decades and have shot many coyotes with my 22 Mag. at distances up to 100 yards with great success. Well placed shots are of course a prerequisite.

My uncle took a 17 pill and threw it at my leg and said how'd that feel. I said I barely felt it. Then he threw a 40 grain 22 mag bullet at my leg and said how'd that feel. I said I felt it more. Then he took a 50 grain 22 mag pill and threw that at my leg and i said ouch. Just goes to show those 17hmr bullets are way too light. I've never been a fan . Maybe for prairie dogs within 100 yards but that's it. Way too light for coyotes even though I have another uncle who's taken a couple coyotes with his 17 but one got away also. After a chest shot. The 2 he's taken were under a hundred yards and one was a headshot and the other was a heartshot. I think 17hmr was a solution to a problem that never existed. Love an accurate 22 mag.

Its a great cartridge and very useful for all the reasons you mentioned. If I wasnt a handloader and owned several guns in .223/5.56 where I could shoot milder, down loaded, 223 bullets at comparable speeds, I would likely have one on my gun collection other than the Ruger Single Six Convertible I own.

Good Video. I have also loved the 22mag for a long time now it's is a very good cal for small game. I have been using it for a long time with a Norinco JW23 bolt action with great results guns do cost a bit more here in New Zealand so the Norinco is a good cheap option. I have just got a bargain on a Browning T bolt so looking forward to having more time hunting with the 22mag. Ps, Good Video on 270 Winchester another great caliber. Thanks again

Great video! I love 22WMR for taking out ground hogs here in NY. I could list everything I like about it, but you pretty much covered it on this video. I have a CZ 512 that has ran almost flawlessly with the exception of a magazine issue. Otherwise it has chugged through many different ammo types with no issues with blowing cases, extracting, feeding, etc. I have over 300 rounds through it. It is very accurate. So I highly recommend the 512 for a semi-auto option.
@desertdogoutdoors1113

the 512 is the best of all the 22wmr semi-auto designs. Just be mindful (as pointed out in the video) that the 512 was designed for reliability over safety. It will feed and extract anything, but may blow cases in some ammo as a result.

I think it should be part of every complete gun collection. I have one, besides my .22LR's, in the Browning T-Bolt. It is a great and versatile cartridge. In fact in one needed to "bug out" and could only bring one long gun, the .22WMR would be a great choice. The fact I have a Ruger Single Six Convertible makes it even sweeter.

It's probably the best round for eliminating hogs at close ranges without all the noise generated by the 223. Although in my opinion the ultimate weapon for hog warfare in Texas clearing out local ranches wud be my Ruger AR556 topped with an IR 3x9 thermal scope using 69 grain federal fusion loads. 5.56 55 grain mil surp rounds are great for headshots and the higher velocity allows for long range engagement of feral pigs out to 500 yards.

Love your videos man. You seem to hit a vibe with me often on many of your caliber choices. I LOVE the 22Mag. I have shot many foxes with it. A couple coyotes too. I love the performance on raccoons. Great for rats at the dump. And at that same dump we used to shoot feral cats with it too. It’s really a great round out to 125 yards. I would head shoot a hog with one if I ever had the chance. Great for nutria rats in the swamps. My go-to rifle is a cheap varmint barrel bolt Savage 93 rifle with a cheap $35 scope. It just shoots great. Paid $150 for the rifle. And it has short length of pull so it is easy to shoulder. I’m hooked on 22 WMR. Before ammo went crazy I hoarded up a lifetime of ammo for it and I’m grateful to have cans of it. Last point. Critical point. You always talk about this and I can’t tell you how much I thank you for talking about it. Ethical Hunting. I can’t stand when people blast the lead - spray and pray. God intended us to Lord over the earth but not to disrespect the game we chase. So THANK YOU BROTHER.

An excellent video. All of the rimfires in my opinion should be used on small game inside 100 yards. In fact the closer the better. I use my CZ 453 17HMR for fox whistling and I just hold dead on out to that range. The 17 grain pills, once they enter just explode inside the animal's chest causing instant death. My CZ 452 .22 Magnum, as you have stated, has a big variety of factory bullet weights to choose from. Although I find the 17 HMR to be more accurate, the 22 Magnum can do it all on small game as long as you choose heads shots if you intend to eat what your shoot (same with the HMR). The average distance under the spotlight or just whistling up foxes in the afternoon is usually less than 50 years. I work in a major gun shop in Melbourne, Australia and after the 22LR, the 22 Magnum far outsells the HMR in sales figures. It's mainly because the 22 Magnum has now been with us for over half a century and no doubt will still be with us for a lot longer yet. Thanks for sharing!

I recently bought a Marlin Model 25MN in 22 Mag and it's the first firearm I have chambered in it - so far I love it, the diverse selection of ammo is nice to have too. I mostly use it for target shooting so I go with 40 grain FMJ but the TNT rounds are perfect to get an instant humane kill on small game, they just explode on impact going 2200+ FPS.

Thank you for the great video. I have a Savage model 93 .22 mag and loving it, great rifle, but at 74 mostly do paper shooting and love getting dime size groups, I am looking forward to picking up a Savage B22 Magnum Precision and fitting the rifle to me for hopefully some one hole 5 round groups. also shoot a lot of .22 Lr. using a Savage Mark II TR with scope and the Mark II FVR with peep sights. up till age 68 shot open iron sights but eyes just not good enough for open iron now. I do have a Savage semi auto .22 Lr. for a barn yard gun with open sights but will be putting a wide range scope on it. around 4 power. Have been shooting a lot of 5 round dime size groups at 30 and 40 yards but moving my bench back to 60 yards come spring. But want to tighten up the groups , hopping for one very small one hole groups around 1/4" Again thanks for the video one of the best I have seen on the .22 Mag.

Great vid on one of my favorite rounds. Between rifles and handguns I must have at least half-dozen. My truck gun is a Magnum Research SA. Shots at coyotes can be fairly close when driving backroads. It has accounted for a few. I generally steer clear of the light bullet loads as they haven't proven very accurate in my guns. CCI and Win 40gr HP's are the classic rounds and I use them the most. I also like Hornady Critical Defense 45gr and the Federal 50gr. Thanks for posting, Dog! Looking forward to the 457 review.

I enjoyed your video and perspectives especially on caliber, distance, and choice of rimfire cartridges for specific game. Spot on! I personally think most people utilise the semi rimfire incorrectly. For me it is for a quick follow up shot if needed, it is not to be used as a mag dump chasing game. That’s not proper safe ethical hunting. Recently I purchased my first bolt. 591 Remington 5mm magnum rimfire. So far so good, looking forward to taking the golden oldie out this fall for squirrels.

22 magnum is such a great round for your wives who are recoil sensitive as well. And there are a plethora of platforms that are chambered in 22 magnum for many different applications. Bolt action guns like the savage 93 for hunting. Henry has a pump and a lever gun for hunting or fun plinking. Semi-auto like the savage a22. Revolvers for self defense as well. Commonality of rounds so she doesn't have to think about what rounds go where. Everything takes 1 cartridge she can grab a 50 pack of CCI's and any gun she wants and she's ready to go. Lightweight. In stock. Not too terribly expensive. Good round to have. You can buy a 10 gun stack on locker and load it with 3 or 4 22 mag rifles and a couple nice handguns chambered in 22 mag, stock your ammo on the shelf in there with a small cleaning kit and some others necessities and your wife can have her own locker all to herself so she doesn't have to shuffle through all your stuff to get what she needs. When your kids are coming up its a great round to bridge the gap between 22lr and 223.

All three are wicked rounds. Never underestimate any of them. I enjoy the .22 short and the .22 lr because they are very effective rounds. Of course the .17 and .22 mag in this video have speed and power advantages over the .22 lr; but, something else those numbers represent is the loss of energy and loss of speed is the least in the .22 lr out to 150 yards. The other two really lose a lot of steam a lot faster. But, regardless, all three are excellent and you won't be disappointed in any of them. Let's just call it what it is, proof of three tried, true and proven cartridges. If you're lucky, you should get the chance to experience all three. Thanks for the video. Very nice to see your perspective. You are not wrong, the .22 mag has a mighty punch that is superior to the other two.
