@2A_CaliGuy You can temporarily disable the magazine disconnect safety by putting a sliver of plastic under it to keep it from engaging and since its removable it does not void the warranty. The mag release safety nub will need to be filed down to prevent it from engaging but you will need a new manual safety/slide catch if it ever needs to be sent in for warranty as filing it down may void the warranty. I disabled those two safeties so the pistol functions like a normal pistol and still have the manual safety and the manual firing pin block safety. I got the Heritage Arms Rough Rider single action revolver and the Phoenix Arms HP22A for practice, training, varmint control, and small game. I did not get them for self defense. I would use them if they were all I had but .22 rimfire is not reliable enough for defense. I would not want to use .25ACP either for defense even though its more reliable than .22 rimfire because the mouse calibers below .380ACP have high rates of failure to stop threats over standard calibers. The reason they have high kill numbers is because they are cheap and cheap to shoot so many folks have them. But they have equally high rates of failure to stop threats. All pistols are poor at stopping threats its just that mouse calibers are worse. Best to use a long gun like a shotgun or rifle that generate higher velocity and muzzle energy. Thanks for sharing.

.22LR was never designed or intended for a handgun. .25ACP was designed specifically for a semi-auto handgun. In fact, it was created to replace .22LR, as a handgun round, because of the reliability issues of rimfire ammo.

I think rimfire revolvers would be the fix if you're unsure of reliability. Magsafe is really reliable in .22lr. I had a cheap tec-22 as a teen, it never fed reliably even with a flush ruger 10rd rotary mag. Marlin .22 have great reputation for reliability. Ruger .22 pistols are great, but I could spend an hour trying to put it back together after cleaning, lol

We purchased an old Raven 25 auto. Was made in the early 1970s. Picked it up for 40 bucks. After a good soaking in cleaning it fires great. Phoenix arms I believe purchased raven in the mid-1980s. Great inexpensive back up guns.

That’s my understanding as well. Raven, Jennings, Phoenix all based on the same concept. Something the shop said was they were all part of the pacific ring of fire guns. I didn’t look into it much. When I find something inexpensive I tend to just pick it up. Sort of collect them if ya know what I mean. Both my 22/25 by Phoenix have been great. Today I ran a 200 round test on the 22 using CCI 40 grain segmented HPs. Surprisingly I had quite a few failure to fires. . My experience with the HP22 is based only on my experience with a sample size of 1. I intend to do a similar test with the 25, and also to redo the test on the 22 with different ammos.

@@2A_CaliGuy 22. Mag has always been my firearm choice. My dad grew up in southern Virginia. I grew up in Philadelphia. But my dad always used 822 long rifle for hunting and for butchering steer and hog. I started using a 22 single action army handgun. The ballistics were unbelievable. We now hunt, squirrel, rabbit, and groundhog with just the 22 mag bolt action. I also like the inexpensive firearms. I purchased three High Point 45 ACP handguns and three High Point 45 ACP carbines. very little technology in 22lr ammo. Either a lead rn, copper plated rn or hp. Same ammo thats been around forever. Before cci it was winchester super x and remington hornets. The biggest downfall of the 22lr is the rimfire primer and it needs a rifle length barrel for full velocity/effectiveness.

I’ve shot thousands of rounds through my .22LR Phoenix. It’s a great little gun. Haven’t actually had that many loading misfire problems. I also own a .25 in another brand. Fun. But I can’t afford to shoot thousands of rounds through it. I’m not sure I want to count on a .22 for self defense. I always have a 9 handy. But, I’ve been known to carry it a 22 or 25 (different brand) in places I might not carry a 9. Just saying. I’d rather have it than not. But if you practice enough and have good enough placement I’m better off than the guy with a 45 who can’t shoot well. Oh and if I could only own one gun it would be a 22 and I’d be happy to start with the Phoenix. IMHO

Scott. That’s what I’m talking about. Good shot placement is key. Having such low recoil they are great for some people. My little 22 Phoenix has been a gem. Haven’t had any feed issues. Have put a decent amount of rounds through it. I’d definitely stick with the P365 for carry, but if I could only pick one of the two I’d have to take the 25acp.

@@Another-Address Shot placement is key, and no doubt even after a self defense shooting there’s a battle. . The way I see it is better to have it then not have it. My assumption is that most people will never need to use it, but given the current times who knows. . If I was going to go somewhere, and the thought of I Need to bring a gun came in my head I’d just stay home. Aside from hiking/backpacking where I’d bring it for snakes. The sad thing is places most people go you wouldn’t think you’d need to carry. . Going to the grocery store, the movies, restaurants, the mall. These are places you wouldn’t think I need a gun, but having one, and not needing is better then not having one, and needing it. The whole thing is criminals don’t obey laws, and laws that infringe only hurt law abiding citizens. With firearm ownership come responsibility. If not securely stored they can fall into the wrong hands. However aside from that with criminals they don’t care about laws. It’s illegal to stab people, but criminals do it. It’s illegal to steal, but they do it. It’s illegal to do drugs, but they do them. . Given the current situation with the economy, the ridiculous high rate of crime. Everyone has the right to feel safe, and enjoy life. That’s why the recent ruling about CCW licensing was so big. There’s areas in CA that unless you donated large sums of money you couldn’t get a CCW.

Question: Since you have both could you see if the barrel swap is a possibility? 25ACP to 22LR? I am just curious to see since the frame on both look identical, I am curious to see if the barrels and mags are interchangeable. I have seen that they have 2n1 Conversion Kits, but that is for extended barrels. HP22A to HP25A?

Absolutely I’ll check. It does seem it would work with a complete slide/barrel etc swap. The grip module is marked 22/25 on mine. Seems to rack/cycle just fine. . I know most people are buying these as range toys and not to carry, so the safeties are more of an aggravation for those folks, But the way they've designed their safety system actually makes sense for a pocket carry pistol. The main safety blocks you from accidently releasing the mag while you fish this thing out of a small pocket or purse. and the firing pin block is the actual safety while carrying. you use it to safely carry this hammer down and then flip it to fire while cocking the hammer back. it's a little hair brained but you can kind of see what they intended when they set it up this way.

I agree. John Browning agreed too. That why he invented the ACP. A 22 or 25 is (Not always but typically) a deep conceal or last ditch gun. In a defensive role they aren't shot very much. It's not like your 22LR rifle that you may shoot several hundred rounds per outing. These types of pistols normally get practiced with a few times ayear. If the price difference in ammo between 22 and 25 is too much you must consider that there are additonal problems to be addressed in the defense budget.

.22RF ammo varies a lot in quality. I'd be OK with a ,22 with top grade ammo...CCI Mini-mags or Stingers... the hollow points would cause more damage than the FMJs in the .25, although at pistol velocities that would be marginal. Either will get your attention....

Agree with getting both. Cheap practice 22LR and reliable SD .25 ACP. Makes sense if you just want a pocket gun or as a backup, and this is all you can afford right now. Far better than nothing. The mag safety can be easily disabled, per many YT videos. But when you can afford to buy better, and want a pocket pistol, I recommend (and have) the Ruger LCP Max in .380, and a 12-round mag. Get the Mcarbo takedown pin and SS guide rod for reliability, and the more powerful recoil spring for softer shooting. Use either ball ammo such as Fiocchi FMJ or a milder HP such as Remington HTP green & yellow box. With the stock recoil spring and powerful SD ammo like the Sig V-Crown, it is very unpleasant to shoot, so people won't practice with it. I'll take .380 ball over .25 ball any day. I mention Fiocchi because it is the most accurate ball I have found, so far. Better than cheap range ammo, and as cheap or cheaper than most. HP is generally a waste of money with these short barrels, but if it's more accurate than ball I will buy it anyway. Shot placement.

Where as you noted 22 long rifle can be sketchy from time to time. I've got a Walther P22 and the only thing it will shoot with any consistency is CCI mini mags Also as far as the 25 ACP I would carry ball ammo because you're not getting enough velocity to get any expansion on the hollow points.

No issues with cases jamming etc. For what we paid for the Taurus I’d say it could be the best choice for affordable CCW guns. Nice long trigger pull to fire from uncocked, but having the option to cock the hammer for nice crisp trigger is epic. Another perk is less worry of accidental discharge with it in the uncocked hammer position.

Makes it hard to grab something when it comes up unless your not currently running a dros, or the shop offers layaway 😆

I bought the HP-25A a couple of years ago. It's kind of ghetto. The slide is made of pot metal and has already shown evidence of wear after just a couple of hundred rounds. I've also found that for the first couple of hundred rounds, the magazines were only reliable when downloaded to 5 rounds, though it's reliable with a full mag after wearing in. It's an interesting range toy, but I wouldn't rely on it for anything. I would say that it might be a good beginner's pistol (light recoil and single action), but I have found that taking this out with new shooters that it is too frustrating to use to be fun

Definitely cumbersome to use. May not be the best to learn on for a beginner. They do provide good range fun. All in all I’m happy with mine. The mag release mod/mag disconnect mod seem to make it much better.

I'd bet there's a fairly simple way to disable the link between safety and mag latch. Might also be possible to at least make the gun lock open until you drop the mag, so you know you're out before pulling the trigger on an empty chamber, too (lots of small auto pistols do this with a simple notch in the rear of the magazine pusher that catches on the bolt/slide). Making the mag drop free is likely just a matter of some work with emery cloth or a file. Fix those things, and it's no worse (or better) than an Excam or other mid-20th pocket pistols. If it's built out of steel instead of a cast zinc frame I'd surely consider buying one -- I like the .25 round, most of these tiny pistols are more accurate than people believe, and as others have said, .25 is better than .22 just for reliability. Once upon a time (1970s) it was the second biggest selling ammunition caliber in the US, after .22 LR -- suggesting that at least some of those little "purse pistols" were actually going to the range pretty regularly.
@2A_CaliGuy
@2A_CaliGuy Жыл бұрын
I’ve enjoyed them both. They are cast frames, and you are correct if you wanted you can modify them to be more user friendly. I just got a setup for casting, and just so happened to get a .25 bullet mold from a friend. The only downside to the 25 at the range is ammo isn’t cheap. For self defense ammo it’s not bad, and would work better then nothing.
@SilntObsvr
@SilntObsvr Жыл бұрын
@@2A_CaliGuy I had the setup to reload .25 once, but I found I could only find about a third of my spent brass at an outdoor range. Between being so small it can vanish between two pieces of gravel or into the cracks between boards in a shooting bench, and needing a close look to sort it from .22 LR, it just wasn't worth reloading (to me). Same has been true for .32 ACP and .380 in my experience. Now, if you manage to find or make a brass catcher so you can keep, say, three quarters of your brass, reloading for the tiny semi rounds might become practical -- or if you have a private indoor range so all the brass you pick up is yours and you just have to sort by caliber...

From Standard Velocity to the really High Velocity stuff, Round Nose, Hollow Points, Segmenting Rounds, so with Practice a 22 would still be my caliber of choice. Have Gun Will Travel was a look into a rare west point grad who somewhere between sanfrancisco hot tubbing and boots on the ground professional troubleshooter and sometimes killer had the sensitivity to help all applying but when they got the best of him and disarmed him .. he had his derringer hidden under his belt buckle ... I learned early... Uncle Ringo showed me where we bury the rustlers on Arizona ranches up north. I got a rep as a trick shot and out of the marines I was guarding Kissinger and Chase as they had returned from China Accords ... It was not on the roster but I kept a 25 auto in my pocket and the armory I had at my disposal I rarely touched unless asked. The .25 ammo is harder to find so I would choose a .22. plus owning other .22 I don't have to buy more ammo types. I did see a test online comparing the two, the .25 was clearly more effective. There are many reviews on the HP22A nearly all are very positive as has been my experience. It's not my only firearm but it is as reliables as any more expensive ones. I didn't even bother to clean it for a long time but kept functioning fine. As for choosing one over the other, the reviews I have seen on the .25.appear to be as good as the HP22A.
