Usually you have a bad cable. But let's be honest, John has seen it all, here is what it might be.

Excellent tip. My speedo was flicking around and reading low above 30. After watching this found my nut less than finger tight, only retained by the tab washer.

I was having a ridiculous run-around with this. Finally discovered, new speedcable and new angle drive were not engaging (totally slipping, speedcable is oval-ed, but didn't quite do it). I wrapped it with Teflon tape (and used two copper washers to ensure the angle drive doesn't bottom out)...finally I also disassembled the speedometer itself and sprayed some WD40 on mechanism...it finally works right! ENSURE...the speedometer cable engages the angle drive and lubricate the speedometer.

Who would have thought that? Well, I wouldn't have in any case. I knew about the cable, had it happen on my MGA a thousand years ago. Never owned a B so wouldn't have come up against this, I guess. Great tip. Thanks.

Just take off the speedo cable from the gearbox and put a drill on it driving anti clockwise to prove your cable and speedo . Then its either this nut or the worm drive .

Anyone know if the Triumph TR4 transmission speedo gear is keyed of relies on the nut?

Always replace the speedo cable on a flickering speedo, fixes the problem inexpensively the majority of the time

The rock and roll opening doesn't really work with the tweedy reputation of the ageing MG community.
