Hi Jerry. I think I may have already told you this but, the way my brains "turns" after the stroke is not the same anymore and I can't remember having written it down so, here it goes. Madeira is a Portuguese word. It means timber or wood. in Portuguese the way you should read these two symbols produces a single sound just like the English pronounciation of an "a". It's that simple: just read the word "Madara" with the English way and you'll get the exact Portuguese pronounciation for the word that means wood in Portuguese, exactly like we say it (not the Brasilians who use a corrupted way of speaking my language). best regards.

My grandfather, named Ira, was born in 1888. Nine months prior, my great grandfather and great grandmother MADE IRA, which is how I'll choose to pronounce it from now on. LOL. Great job. Giving the customer exactly what he wants (a "playable" mando) and then some (sounds great on this end) gets a big ol' thumbs up from me, every day, all day.

Good Job! Especially good invention of the tool, so you could fix it. I wasn't all that fond of it's sound. That makes me really curious as to what it would sound like with the posts moved above the bridge. That idea makes me think of other things that probably would need other RSW inventions! Just to explain my impression on its sound: 1) I did not hear the mic get over driven, so it's not a loud Mandolin. 2) It didn't sound pretty or nice to me, somehow it was just a touch harsh. Remember, the last time I commented on the sound of a repaired instrument, I ended up saying I should never do it again!

I have a Fender A style FM-52E that I bought for $150.00 at Guitar Center a few years ago and the top is sagging, too! I'm going to try what you did but put the pegs in front of the bridge like you thought might make that mandolin sound better. Since this is my, "try it, what's the worst that can happen", mandolin.....I'm not worried what happens to it. 3 years old = 50 bucks a year.......I'd say I got my money's worth! I only use it for making demos for songwriting, since it has a pickup in it and it's easier/quicker to record ideas than getting out the mics, headphones and recording my "real" mandolin. As always thanks for the videos and your knowledge!

Hi my Friend "Madeira" is a Portuguese word that means "Wood". I would guess that the mandolin is Brasilian or, most likely, Chinese. I love Brasilian music since my early teens and have been to Brasil on Musical rides several times. I have never heard or seen a Mandolin in Brasil but, I may be wrong it may of course have been made in Brasil or Portugal or, as far as things are going, it could have been made anywhere else. The brand on the other hand is a portuguese word, not Spanish nor Italian or even Romenien . All the other Latin based languages I know apart Italian. In Italian wood translates as "Legno" and in Spanish "Leña". In French its a total different word of local origins, its called "bois" and in Romenien "lemny". Finaly in Latin, wood translates as "Lignium" which results in the Portuguese word "Lenha" that also means Wood , Timber or lumber. I suspect the brand has been named in China by someone born in Macau, a Portuguese colony in China until 10 years ago. So, I bet on a Chinese origin for this Mandolin.

I had an inexpensive Ibanez where the top sagged which made it unplayable. That happened because the top was not carved but heat pressed. With changes in humidity, as we have in Florida, the top can sag under the pressure of the strings. ALWAYS buy a mandolin with a carved top!

@RosaStringWorks4 жыл бұрын
Sound posts in violins are never glued in or at least they should never be glued in. They are held in place by friction. Therefore using that same technology I use the same method.

I think it's yesterday, I was wondering if this intro music was playing and/or composed by yourself. Since I like it, I said to myself that I should search for it to hear the all of it and voila... Also, I always was curious to know why in the classic radio station they used to say titles song with, for example : "in D minor". Why? Is it to help people who wants to play it or is it that some people will say : "oh I prefer this peace in E minor"? Is ti possible too that the "in D minor" is part of the title? Hehehe. Really hope to have answer from anyone who could help me on this.

Why is it that a sound post is a must on violins and not on Mandolins? if a sound post suppose to upgrade a certain sound it wouldn't mind if you call the instrument a violin or a mandolin. I would even try it on an acoustic guitar, who knows.
@RosaStringWorks6 жыл бұрын
I think the difference is the mechanics. The violin top is much smaller and doesn't vibrate in large waves like the larger mandolin top and a larger guitar top when you put the sound Post in there at that actually stops those larger tops from vibrating as much. On a mandolin for instance it typically makes them sound thinner and more tinny
@dscdrkel55466 жыл бұрын
Jerry** Great job! I was wondering if my violin aging system would produce a chiadni pattern on a mandolin top to show the best location for the sound post**DR KEL

Why not put glue under the braces and set sound posts under them as close the end as possible? I have an Ibanez F style mandolin. The only thing wrong with it is, it desperately needs someone who knows how to play it. It sits in the corner and rings out on D and G notes when I sing. I thought at first I was hearing things but I put a Snark on it and it is real. I say rings out but it is probably more of a moan. You would moan too if you heard me sing!
@kevinpaul17196 жыл бұрын
They put all that car paint on them. I have my dad's Gibson from 1940s and the top treatment is thin and dark. The Ibanez I have is a good Mandolin but the tone and volume just isn't there. They have several coats of ? paint on it. Pretty yes, a good Mandolin yes. A great mandolin NO!

Madre mia! Hey, MADEIRA is a PORTUGUESE word, meaning wood, to be pronounced MAH-DAY-RAH. It is also the name of a sizable island in the Atlantic, with a few hundred thousand inhabitants, the most well-known of them being Christiano Ronaldo, the world's best soccer player over the last 15 years. It is NOT a Spanish word, although Spanish has a very similar word for wood, madera.

"Madeira" is a Portuguese word and not Spanish or Italian. It means "wood". I would guess this is a Brasilian made mandolin though it could be Chinese. Everybody knows how the Chinese love to "invent" words to brand their products bound to export and more than likely they misspell the "invented" words too… Madeira is definitely a Portuguese word that means wood or timber.
