I usually hate going to repair shops back home in Berlin (even before the latest incident) but this time it’s different! Aleks from Rascal Motorcycles in Riga / Latvia reached out and offered his help. How can I say no? And so I went with a long list and the infamous rattling noise out of the engine of my over 30 year old Honda Dominator 650. We basically took the whole motorbike apart. Engine head, valves, camshaft, camchain, camchain tensioner, camchain guide and even took off the clutch cover…but did we actually find the origin of the problem?
Also NEW TIRES (metzeler tourance) and complete ne front brakes. And btw I had basically no brake fluid left and learned about my big mistake. I also get to right 3 different custom bike. NOT A BAD DAY 🙌🏼👌🏼
Leave Aleks a good review if you think he’s awesome: Rascal Motorcycles

Hello from Croatia, my Dominator also make the same noise and guys that restaurated my bike told me that decompresor on every Dominator is week point and it make that noise when its bad.. You dont need to be worry about that, its only annoying a bit.. You also can buy the camshaft without the decompresor but its not cheap and its not worth of that money.. Your bike is going to be fine. 🙋‍♂

Congrats to Aleks for all that work done !! This are the good mechanics. The problem with the HONDA dealers Mark is that the don't want to get involved with old bikes like ours, not interested. They want a brand new Africa Twin where as I saw it with my eyes, they had to strip half bike tale to change an indicator relay, lots of labor hours just to plug that and charge you a fortune lol thanks for the videos, Gus

Old bikes sometimes make noises... I got some doubts with mine (a Kawasaki Vulcan 500 from 97) when I first got it. Now, 2 1/2 years and over 20,000km later... She's still running just fine. You took the engine apart, nothing was broken... And this time you were there in person to see what was being done. That's what matters. I don't think you have to worry too much over this.

Wow, Great vid! Enjoyed watching real pros in action. Aleks & Team at Rascal Motorcycles are impressive.. Not sure if the noise came back or not. I once had an XR500 develop a similar rattle. It ended up being a small chunk of the bottom of the cylinder sleeve cracked off (it was bored to the max), but that little chunk would come off the bottom during big bumps, etc. and rattle around. But, there was evidence of the part scratching up the surfaces of the inside of the motor. You probably would have seen scratches if you had a piece rattling around. I'm thinking the hassle caused by worrying about it has caused more distress than an actual failure from the part. Don't think i'd worry about it anymore and just ride it.. Good luck! Added: As long as there isn't evidence of metal in the oil..

that was nice, to work with the guys and see them opening the engine and deliberating on the mysterious noise. I am sure you have learned a lot about your beloved bike. What matters is that you did not find anything obviously wrong. Just a remark on the tires: they seem more for road than off (say 40/60) The ones you had were a bit more for off road. (say 60/40) So they may be smoother on paved roads but tricker when you go in campgrounds etc. Just be aware

Marc, I love your videos. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Aleks and his team are awesome. Great mechanic. Knows what he's doing. If your Cam Chain Tensioner is getting stuck in between positions, it could be due to old/dirty oil. Since it relies on oil to function, dirty, old oil can gunk up the CCT's oil passageways. Your Honda's engine does not have a lot of oil in its reservoir...my guess is less than 2.5 US Quarts. And it is air/oil cooled engine too, so that oil works hard. Try changing engine oil and filter every 2k-3k miles to keep it clean and help the Cam Chain Tensioner. The rattling you are hearing is NOT the chain but the valves being off timing when the CCT is not putting enough tension on the cam chain. Should replace it as soon as you can. It may look good on the outside, but it is already telling you it needs to be replaced. Keep up the great work on your channel.

Marc It is clear to me that this is a very serious mechanic, a professional one. The way he checked the quality of the oil in the brakes already told me everything. In my opinion, the noise in the Upper engine comes from the tensioner or from the chain itself if it hasn't replaced yet. You didn't say what is the condition of the valve clearance ?. Latvia looks like a very beautiful, clean and Green country. What nice and kind to find good people on the way Marc!

The reason why it rattles more when hot is because the oil gets thinner, and as such doesn’t dampen the engine noises.

I have had many Dominators in the past and have always on the earlier models added (welded) a small nut onto the end of the cam chain tensioner just to add a little more tension .. ..Start your bike up if you can remoe theh cam chain tensioner then with a screwdriver push into the vacant hole against the chain guide to see if you can lose or re-create the the noise if you can lose the noise add the nut ..get someone with some experience to help you ..just something which may help .good luck

I have a theory about the rattling noise. The chain tensioner. That sometimes it vibrates much and it jumps back 1 or 2 steps and the rattling noise start. And after a while the oilpressure put it back to the right place again. If it start rattling again, then turn off the engine, put it in 2nd or 3rd gear and roll bike a little backwards to slacken the chain on tensioner side and roll it forward again. do this a couple of time and start engine again. If it is quiet now then replace the tensioner.

Marc, I do have a feeling (ex Motorcycle mechanic) it is the cam chain tension-er that slips sometimes and gives the noise, it is a oneway clutch type affair as someone else said when you get work done ask for the old parts....anyway hope it all goes well on your rise home.

I am in the process of buying a Honda as well. A different model. However, the chain tensioner seems to be a common problem there too. I have read that it can happen that the chain tensioner gets stuck between two stages. It doesn't "lock" in either one or the other. If this is the case, it can cause the chain to rattle. The fact that it has disappeared again supports this theory. The chain must be tightened, but not enough to reach the next detent point. After a few more kilometres, there will be enough space for the tensioner to engage and the rattling will stop. Cheers from Berlin mate :)

Hi Marc, I really liked your video today. In particular I liked the close up footage of some of the work that was done. Being a mechanic and a petrol head (as we say here in the uk) I love watching that stuff, even although I do it myself all day. It’s a shame you haven’t yet found the exact problem. Although the mechanic guys in your video today seemed great, I can tell from what he said that he knows his stuff. And what a good guy trying to help you out 👍. Given my own knowledge I would like to try to help you if I can. I know a lot about engines so can give you a comprehensive list of potential causes of the problem. I think it will help you to progress finally with your issue. Essentially you need an angle of attack to make progress. It is reasonable that many qualified mechanics at repair shops could look at your bike and never find the issue as they will likely all check the same things repeatedly. To make progress you need to narrow down to the problem. Given that the problem is intermittant it will be hard to identity directly, but another approach you can take instead is “method of deduction” even when you don’t know what the fault is, if you have a list of all possible causes you can test them one by one until you have only one remaining answer, and you can also be confident everything else is ok as you have tested it. In my opinion the bike needs to go to an engine repair shop, not a bike repair shop. This is because the engine repair shop specifically are experts in engines. They can test all components comprehensively with specialist equipment and check all internal tolerances, they will find the answer. Here’s just a short list of items that could cause a rattling; Camshaft Valves including sticky guides Cam chain or tensioner Rod bearing Crank bearing Various bearings or shafts inside the engine A blocked oil passage way (test oil pressure) Really the list goes on for a while, but any engine building expert will know of all the potential causes anyway so they shouldn’t need to be told by anyone. It is very important that the engine repair person gets to hear the noise before the engine is removed as this will give them very valuable information and give them a direction to go in. Anyways I hope this info helps you out matey, it is certainly a route to the answer if you choose to take it. Lastly, sorry for the massive comment and good luck with this, I really hope to see it fixed one day so you can just get back to enjoying it 👍 Cheers

There are so many good looking dommie scramblers, but I swear, almost everyone uses the same CG 125 tank. 😂 I once saw a build with either Dnepr or IZH tank and it was such a breath of fresh air 😄 I thought about doing it to my BMW F650, but I think I'll keep it stock 😊 also that CX is gorgeous 😍 I almost got one once, I want a 650C but there are only 500ccs here

Hi Marc, I succeeded to catch up with your videos (relatively short vids helps). I know what's behind making vids and that it takes time even for what seems to be a short result. You're doing an excellent job, especially with the drone, some shots are really high level. The editing, the music, the filming, the vlogging, ur good at it and passionate about it and it shows :o). Thanks for sharing. Maree's contribution is a very nice plus. I wish u both the best and look forward seeing u both sharing travels :) Thanks pals and \ / to you.

Great job in the servicing of your bike Marc. It has many years to go still ! Hope Aleks continue to do well. We enjoyed seeing the insides. It will still make less noises than a new Ducati ! "HYGROSCOPIC" is the word used to describe brake fluid.......its affinity to absorb moisture from the atmosphere. (Baking Powder too). If you leave a full-right-up container of brake fluid unattended, after some time it will start overflowing with the moisture it absorbs. It causes your brake pistons to pit (especially if you drive a lot in wet conditions) at the seal lip, as the moisture enters there. In extreme braking conditions the heat generated may cause vapour lock in your braking system. With the amount of rain you get while riding Marc, flush your fluid every year. Is the bike with the blue tank an early Yamaha XJ650 Seca shaft drive ? Trinidad & Tobago. West Indies.

Hi Marc, seems your bike got a full and detailed inspection. Guess you are just a biker and not as we say in german a Schrauber. Well, you learned a lot and you just now know what have to be regulary checked. May be there is something more which helps you bike to stay much longer alive. Btw, it always seems you have a sort of personal connection to your bike but never heard that you have given a name to it to undermine your connection to it. Enjoy the next days and kilometers on the road. Thanks to Alex for his expertise and suupport unknownwise.

Without more info, the best I can come up with (intermittent noise); a part usually held ridged that due to some issue moves when not held in place by a temporary force. An example (not applicable here) would be a belt tensioner on an engine, where the coiled spring that applies the force to the pulley slips in and out of the hole restraining one or both ends of the spring. Sometimes the spring works (when it’s in the hole) and other times it doesn’t (when the end pops out). Good luck finding the issue!
