Had I not had this in an inherited record collection, I would have remained ignorant of this fabulous musical era.

@abendstunde49 It always surprises me, how little have the central parts of London changed in last 100 years! Picadilly Circus looks virtually the same as it did in the 1930s- ofcourse, with a small correcion made to the cars' silhouettes and the girls' outfits and haircut. Plus, the Wrigley gum ads etc (there, the Criterion's shield can be seen on one of the houses).

I'm always glad to find a version that contains the verse -- albeit wordless here, with the muted trumpet playing the melody. ... As for glamour, what could be more glamourous than the shot of Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence from Private Lives!

@camille885 There's something exceptional in this malody, indeed. It's one of the few, one never gets bored with listening to it.

@Trombonology Thank you for reminding us from what play was this outstanding photo taken from. I think, it contains - in its every detail, even in these too-a -clear lines of Noel's eyebrows (probably, he depiled them before show) the whole universie of a glamourous style of London in the 1930s. The refinement had reached its peak and now, the one and only way leads - down :-((
My friends keep asking me why I don't listen to more modern recordings of these songs, and they never understand when I tell them that.

Great to hear and compare this to Whiteman's; this is just as great if not superior. I love it!

How can such a jolly tune have such quasi-tragic lyrics? The irony of exaggeration, I guess. Excellent visuals...That lady in white @1:15 seems mildly mad; maybe it's the stiffness of that enormous bow tie against her chubby neck?

Hi Grzegorz - this vid sounds great - Sam Browne knows how to "belt it out" - however your visuals look super classy. I especially love the frames 1:36 and 2:56 - I adore those art deco fashions and mood. Last few days - however - I have been "googling" like crazy all about the Ukrainian ex-prime minister - Ms Yulia Tymoshenko - who is sick - in jail while Mr Yanukovich - the present prime minister - moved up her appeal proceedings to Dec. 1 - big "act of God" - he had to do something decent!!!
