I am going to give my take on this (bare in mind, it will be a bit long): IPS can never catch up to TN in motion fluidity. The reason is light. More precicly light reaching your eye. When your eye recives a certain amount of light, the pupil will adjust in order to compensate. TN panels have shutters that will flat out close the light that goes to your eye if need be, meaning that ghosting will be less of an issue for people who have pupils that react a bit slower. Personally, i have a very slow pupil reaction time (I am bearly within the limits to be able to drive a car, meaning getting my licence, because my eye takes a bit long to adjust), and I can see ghosting effects on IPS, Plasma TVs, even OLED tvs. So, how does this work? If the new scene is brighter than the previous one, ghosting is rearly an issue, but when the scene get darker, if the panel does not "block" the additional light that is dimming, your eye still recives enough light to create ghosting effects. For anyone interested in testhing this themselves, i highly recommend the game "the vanishing of eathan carter" (either version is fine) as it is so realistic in the enviroment, that any ghosting can make it nausious to look at (as the brain belives you have been poisoned due to the unnatural mix with something that seems very natural). I might have been a bit too simplistic in the explanation but basically, if a light bulb (or in this case a LED light that is creating the white light that is then filtered by the panel) is turned off, it will not INSTANTLY turn off. The residual energy keep the light active at lower intensity for a while, giving visual information that should not be there. The reason this is so noticible for some people (and others a bit less) is because our eyes react a bit differently and a few miliseconds can be either not noticeable at all, or very annoying. (plz check tft central for more information on panels, they are amazing at not only reviews but also explaining waht each measurement means). The key element here is that if there is ghosting (even ghsoting that you cant actually see) the fluidity of the motion will be... worse. Not bad, just worse. Of course this is my personal opinion and you would be smart to confirm anything I wrote instead of just believing it. Edit: plz take a clsoe look (frame by frame) at time 2:58 to 3:00 right as tracer is pulse bombing there is clear ghosting effect (most visible at the hand of tracer throwing the pulse bomb)

I recently returned my Alienware AW2518HF 240Hz and ordered an ASUS VG249Q 144Hz IPS. As someone who only plays first-person shooters, I never thought that the difference from 144Hz to 240Hz could be this minor. I can now confidently say that a 240Hz TN monitor like the XL2546 is no way near worth $500. My next move is trying out a 1440p 144Hz IPS. If the size (27'') happens to be a problem, I'll replace it with the MSI MAG251RX 240Hz IPS. 240Hz feels exactly like how I imagined the jump from 144Hz to 180Hz would feel like. Slightly smoother, but nothing groundbreaking.

The inverse ghosting is abhorrent on all modes except for "fastest" which, like OpTech said in the video, utilizes an anti-motionblur feature that dims the screen by far too much. The screen also takes on a warmer hue and the whites become washed out, leaving you at a disadvantage in some games. I urge anyone looking to buy an MSI monitor to try it out in person before buying. @Handsx4 жыл бұрын
IPS is still a native 4ms pixel response vs 1ms native with TN panels. IPS can achieve 1ms, but only through overdrive settings. Overdrive WILL show artifacts/ghosting unless proper compensation is applied. ANYTHING that requires compensation to compete with a faster native response time, will be inferior. It's all smoke and mirrors marketing with this "fast IPS" crap. I would LOVE to have an IPS natively faster than a TN, but it's physically not possible. And yes, in fast paced FPS you will notice this difference. IMO, the "veterans" doing reviews saying fast ips is no different than 1ms TN, they might not have eye sight capable of noticing these differences anymore. There is a difference. If your main focus is blur free fast action, go with a TN panel that is a NATIVE 240hz (not overclocked) with an official G-SYNC module (not G-SYNC "capable".) This is the most pure blur free image I have seen so far. OLED is the only other display type currently out that can compete as the native response is 0.01ms. All LCD based display technologies only go as low as 1ms natively.

@A.Froster4 жыл бұрын
FRC ? What's that ?
@CharcharoExplorer4 жыл бұрын
@@A.Froster "Frame rate control (FRC) is a method for achieving higher color quality in low color resolution display panels such as TN+film LCD. Most TN panels represent colors using only 6 bits per RGB color, or 18 bit in total, and are unable to display the 16.7 million color shades (24-bit truecolor) that are available from graphics cards. Instead, they use a dithering method that combines adjacent pixels to simulate the desired shade.[needs update] FRC is a form of temporal dithering which cycles between different color shades with each new frame to simulate an intermediate shade. This can create a potentially noticeable 30 Hz flicker. FRC tends to be most noticeable in darker tones, while dithering appears to make the individual pixels of the LCD visible.[1] This method is similar in principle to field-sequential color system by CBS and other sequential color methods such as used in Digital Light Processing (DLP). 8 bit TN+film panels with dithering are sometimes advertised as having "16.2 million colors". Some panels now render HDR10 content with an 8-bit panel using frame rate control." It can actually be used in 12-bit colour panel too, in theory. Would be superior to just 12-bit. Which is already incredible btw.
@synchronos14 жыл бұрын
FRC (which confusingly stands for Frame Rate Control, yet it has nothing to do with variable refresh rate) is temporal dithering that is used to achieve HDR on monitors that aren't natively capable of that many colors (or just the normal 8-bit colors on 6-bit monitors). E.g., if you want to have a color value of 144.5 (on any single channel), you could make the pixel flicker between 144 and 145 (assuming 8-bit 0-255 color range). After each color channel would have 4096 distinct colors what the 12 bits would provide, I don't think there's any need to boost that even higher with FRC, though.

There’s really no need. I’d prefer 144hz and everything else to be improved over 240hz+

@@AussieZeKieL yes, there is a need for higher refresh and fps. Much much higher, i.e several thousands. It's fine to say it's difficult to achieve. It's BS to say there's no need.

Alienware 1080p 240hz fast ips AW2521HF its good for Nvidia rtx 3070? O go for 1440p 144hz?
@TRHardware4 жыл бұрын
How about the Alienware AW2521HF (240Hz IPS), which is direct sucsessor to your own daily Alienware TN 240Hz monitor. Would like to get that review, so I could decide if IPS is worth the extra 80usd compared to TN panel.
@hollandthomas7474 жыл бұрын
I personally still don't see the need for 240hz, I would much rather 1440p and 165hz. I bought the Asus VG27AQ recently (1440p 165hz IPS) And yes IPS makes a world of difference. Its night and day. I love it. The response time is on par with if not better than my old BenQ monitor imo.
@philreitz63304 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you mention input lag? I think input lag is just as important as response time in an e-sports monitor.

Im very disappointed with my current monitor which is the same as yours, 240hz TN panel, yeah its smooth but colors are very bad and ghosting is still there...I was using a CRT 170HZ that died on my otherwise i would still be using it, much better colors, lower response time, no blur and the games felt much smoother..I would say TN panels have a long way to go before they catch up...Perhaps IPS panels are the way to go but still need lower response time...
@CIutchVS54 жыл бұрын
I apologize in advance if you’ve already tried this, but perhaps calibrating the colors could help. Some monitor reviewers also share their calibration profiles in addition to their review which brings you closer to ips color reproduction than the out of the box performance

Max M you get more input delay when you run your cpu or gpu @100%, less with gsync. But it’s best to cap your fps so your cpu or gpu don’t run over 90%

the reason why the logo is on the back is for actual Esport events, where you see players using the monitors and ofc you only see the back, so easy marketing once in stage

There is one. Called ViewSonic, google it. Costs 859 euro on amazon or newegg, can't remember. I am buying the same one, but 1080p, because it costs 570 euro instead. I'd, of course, pay more, but I've just upgraded my pc fully and didn't want to spend much more money on it. So buy one and enjoy! Perhaps, I was wrong, can't find this viewsonic, found only 165 hertz. But look for it, it should be there, should have been not viewsonic then.

You also forget whoever goes for 240hz is going to be hardcore at least. That means TN panel with its washed out color is actually better in competitive games. i had once gone with a IPS 144 panel, and all the corners are so dark, it is even harder for me to play. but that doesn't mean you can tune the IPS to suit more competitive play (increase the shadow). it all comes down to cost. Nowadays, DIY an 1080p144TN might cost less than $200AUD (doesn't include monitor case), and it is perfectly fine even for top-spost players. but an 1440p144 is going to cost more than 4 times the price for having it an IPS as well.

1440p ips is not that expensive. I got a viewsonic 27inch 144hz 1440p for 450 aud. Although the response time is not as good as the 600 aud LG, the color is very good.

Any game will benefit from variable refresh rate to prevent tearing and reduce stutter and input lag. So, If you still have fixed refresh rate 60Hz monitor I highly recommend getting some of recently released budget IPS gmaing monitors. I myself bought Viewsonic XG2405 and can safely recommend it.
