Even in a loss, watching Boise State reminded me of why I love sports. You can tell that there is a genuine connection between that team, and the community. SEC and BIG10 has become an arms race for who can spend the most to rent players for a year? Winning a championship doesn't feel as good when the roster drastically changes every season and everyone is tampering with other teams. And g5 teams definitely have a chance at winning individual playoff games. Idk why we would separate G5 from P5 imo Boise showed they belonged tonight.

Here is my whole disagreement with the whole "G5 doesn't have a shot". There are a plethora of "Power 4" teams that realistically don't either. In my opinion, Boise showed that they could hang with the big boys tonight. It discredits their season to say that they have no right to compete, when you have said that you are for the spirit of competition (not a direct quote but you said this in regards to SMU over Alabama being in the playoff). If you wanted to have a G5 playoff, it would separate how division 1 FBS is viewed by viewers, coaches, and athletes. Also the G5 has done really well against the Power 4 this bowl season. Having more separation between G5 and Power 4 would be catastrophic for the sport, since you would essentially be saying that the G5 is basically a step up from FCS ball, and then there is a big gap between G5 and Power 4 even though they are both FBS. Newflash, there is a gap amongst Power 4 teams as well.
@milan.241218 күн бұрын
Bro what are you talking about that they showed they can hang with the big dogs?? Penn State is not a big dog, in fact they’ve been trying to prove for the longest time that even they can hang with the top teams….
@jaboosk18 күн бұрын
@@milan.2412interesting take, but I would rebuttal and say that Penn State is a great team. They totally are a “big boy” team because they literally are. Going back to that, Josh said it himself multiple times. “Penn State is never overrated, but properly rated”. They are a great team, and by my definition they are one of the big boys. Consistently a top 10 team is what I would call a “big boy” program. Most power 4 teams would love to go 10-2 consistently every single year. Just because they are not winning the “big ones” doesn’t mean they aren’t the gold standard, they are what most programs want to be.
@milan.241218 күн бұрын
@@jaboosk how can you say they’re a big boy when they lose to every “top” team? They’re a good, solid team/program - not a great one. Simply look at their record against top ranked teams. If they played Indiana, Oregon and Michigan on top of Ohio State in the regular season I doubt they make the playoff - but that’s a hypothetical so again just look at their record against top ranked teams.
@smilebehappy610218 күн бұрын
they only suggest changes that help Ohio State, Alabama or Notre Dame continue to be rewarded. Never hinder them. They never say Alabama or Ohio state can only have one five star recruit every 2 or 3 years. They never say Notre Dame can't be on National TV until all 125 other teams have a prime time game rule change.
@LeeH-c8g18 күн бұрын
One game/bowl game anyone can be upset, or can hang as you say. The point is the week in, week out competition over the season is a big difference. Injuries, etc happen more often and depth matters. For example, Jeanty is a baller but would not have had those numbers playing BIG10 defensense every week for a season. He's gonna go off at times cuz he's that good, but not every week like he did vs the 185lb DBs and slow 215lb LBs he was playing against in the MTN West. There are bad teams in P4 as well but even alot of them would fair much better in a G5 league cuz they recruit bigger faster dudes.
@2017NationalChamps18 күн бұрын
Josh Pate's assessment of Boise"s chance to win a title also applies to 75% of the p5.
@Joeyjojoshabbadoo18 күн бұрын
Yeah, you think? The reason a G5 team gets a bid is because the playoff would be illegitimate without it. Every single team in the D-1A classification has to have an opportunity to qualify by at least some legal, official means, otherwise the playoff, per se as a playoff, is a farce, and indeed is illegitimate. And yet he keeps reminding us that the big dog programs are on another level, as if that somehow needs to be emphasized, and maybe fans don't realize that, or is even relevant at all. The G5 has like, 60 teams and they only get one sure bid. The powers that be on the committee have very demonstrably kept their participation in the playoff to an absolute bare minimum, when by rights every D-1A conf. champ should get a playoff bid, or your playoff is not a playoff. But apparently that's not enough, and even though Boise St. did just fine last night, the fact that a team like Boise St. is probably never going to win the playoff altogether, because they just don't have the horses, as an argument against the inclusion of teams like Boise St. at all, and they shouldn't even get a bid, is so perverse and so absurd, that it's bordering on nonsensical. That's not why playoffs exist, nor is it why Boise St. as a G5 team got a bid. Doesn't matter if they lost 100-0. All teams in the same classification have to be able to qualify, or you don't have a playoff, you have an invitational, which is what he wants. The regular season W/L record becomes effectively meaningless, and has no direct bearing on who gets in. And it's just a gladiatorial showdown handpicked by the committee. Preferably full of a cohort of SEC teams every year. Which is what he very adamantly and unsubtly wants.

We only played a "close 17 point game" because PSU stopped running the football for long stretches of time when it was their bread and butter in this game. Even if BSU didn't have as many turnovers and were better inside the 30, it still would have been a multiple TD loss if PSU stayed committed to running the football. Another thing to consider here is that even if we pulled the upset, there was no way we could beat then beat Georgia and Ohio State back to back in a high-stakes playoff setting. Not even the Kellen Moore teams would have been able to do that.

The gap between the Elite vs mid to low tier P4 is larger than the gap between the mid to low tier P4 and the G5. Teams love to take G5 players and coaches in the portal, but bad mouth them every chance they get. Also, a G5 getting into the playoff and having the chance to show it on the field means vastly more to that fan base than it would going to random bowl #82. Even if they get dog walked. The beauty of college football has always been that upset out of nowhere. I'd rather it expand to 32. Have no auto bids or byes. Remove CCG and and all bowls. Have the post season be a gauntlet between the top 24% of D1-A teams and play it out. Sounds like alot of fun to me. The number 32 team was Georgia Tech and they took it to Georgia. I also don't believe we could ever go back to the BCS even if everyone wanted to. If it's not National Championship, the top talent in CFB opt out. No matter who you were rooting for, you have to agree that the refs were horrible. There were several holding and interference calls that should have been flagged on both teams that weren’t. It always seems like the flags are thrown at the most damaging time in the game. Seeding needs to be tweaked. Boise deserved to get in but didn’t deserve a bye. It’s also crazy how Penn State received the easiest first two rounds of all playoff teams.
@Jn9097418 күн бұрын
Exactly. The take that Boise St shouldn't get in at all is ridiculous. They went 12-1 with their only lose by a field goal to the number one team in the country, Oregon. What's the point of letting 12 teams in if a team like that doesn't get a shot. Plus if you want to talk about history, Boise St has proved they belong multiple times. Where they on Penn States level at this point this year? Definitely not. But neither are pretty much any teams outside of like 5 others. So you let in 12 teams, then ya, alot of teams won't be on the level of the best. I'd much rather see Boise St get a shot then a team like Bama that I saw get blown out by Oklahoma the last month of the season. But ya they definitely should not have gotten a bye, that's the real flaw of the playoffs. If they were the 12 seed it would have been perfect. The fix for the playoff is actually pretty simple because if they just changed the bye format and changed it to just following the rankings it would be great. Unfortunately we all know they won't just take the easy fix and will probably fix it by causing all kinds of other issues by expanding it and adding more auto bids. I hope I'm wrong. But that's probably what will happen.

as I mentioned in a previous post, the initial video replay focused on the wrong Boise lineman & I was in a bar watching the game & didn’t see the clarification. It was indeed the correct call. That being said, Boise was their own worst enemy with 4 TO’s, 2 missed FG’s & a TD called back on a penalty that would have cut the lead in the 4thQ to 3pts. They out gained Penn State & could have easily won the game. The idea this game was never in doubt is folly. Josh is often right, but he’s wrong here. PSU ran the ball 2/3rds of their plays & tried to keep them honest by occasionally throwing the ball. The threat of the pass & big play forced Boise to occasionally be honest with their safeties; and when they blitzed PSU to pressure the QB, it made them vulnerable to being gashed as they were on Singleton’s 58 yard TD. Boise was in a nickel & had 10 men in or around the box gambling pass & trying to blitz Allar & ultimately leaving Singleton one on one with the safety.

They will always fuck up because they want more money. They were close to the perfect conferences back in the 1980s, but they were more concerned about basketball. I mean, we all know that if Penn State would have joined the Big East in the 1980s, it would not have led to the conference realignment that happened in the early 1990s. FSU may have joined the ACC, which it should have, but the SEC would not have pushed as hard as it did to get to 12 teams. It all resolved around Penn State. If the Big East had allowed Penn State, Notre Dame would have jumped to join, because they were always a team wanting the true Eastern Conference because they were more like Penn State and other Eastern teams in comparison to the Big Ten teams. Read Lou Holtz, Notre Dame was more like Penn State than Michigan. Conference realignment failed when the Big East told PSU to go away. They chose Miami over PSU and ND. I think they lost.

Couldn’t agree more. I also think a huge problem was when they did stick to what was working and went up tempo, after they did it the second drive….. notice how Boise started having injuries CONSTANTLY. Whenever Penn State was going to go up tempo, a Boise player went down…. For a play, then came back.

I’m not entirely sure a G5 team can’t win a title. With the new portal transfer rules; you see just how easy it is to reload a team. SMU did it and made the playoffs. That being said. He makes a fair point. The level of talent and experience in the power 4 is clearly levels above the rest atm. PSU could have easily walked away with 44-14 score tonight if they didn’t abandon the run. And yet they still had over 200 yards rushing. Mind blowing. The defensive and offensive line play is just too obvious. It’s almost like watching a JV team play a state champion high school team. In terms of talent.

Boise could have when they had Peterson and Kellen Moore. Damn Nevada game.

Then problem is the offensive and defensive lines. Not enough of those guys in the portal to build depth and the ones that are, aren't going to Boise State.
