I think the #1 mistake is pulling the cylinder out right after it is rekeyed, before putting the clip or cap back on. All of the top pins and springs end up on the floor.

great video if the c clip is not installed or comes off due to ware the parts will come out when you put the key in and pull it out. then you have a call back. if the lock is installed back on the door and you put the key in and it just turns all the way around then the clip is not connected and you have to hold the plug with your finger and pull the key out. then you can unscrew the lock and replace the clip. if the owner pulls out the key without holding the plug all the pins and springs fall out. and if the lock is in the locked position they are locked out. easy fix tho take a long tweezer pull the tail piece out and taking a flat tipped screw driver put it into the bolt hole and open the bolt.the repair the lock as needed.

Not taking into account the little gap between plug follower and plug when rekeying mortise cylinder. Pulling on plug follower instead of pushing it through with the plug. Blowing into a key machine to clear it of brass shavings. Losing track of customer's key among keys on work bench. Stabbing self in the hand with a screwdriver. Not putting shop tools back where they go. Knocking over the pin kit. Losing a piece from a lockset and taking one from another box and forgetting to take the second lock out of service. Not testing every cylinder before returning it. Taking a wire wheel to the internal parts of a mortise lock to make it look nice and shiny.

Happened to me once in almost 10 years. I didnt check the old key. Master keyed 6 panic bars. I got a call back later that day. "Hey, the old key still works" WTF?!?! Then you got to explain to the customer how extremely rare it is and that you weren't trying to rip them off. Now I always double check definately.

Ok Number 11 has happened a couple of times too. Only when rushing, trying to get the job done then off to the next. And it suck when you dont realize until you have the lock already put back together and on the door. You go and check and the whole cylinder comes out, pins and springs falling everywhere. - seems every time I rush, is when mistakes happen. And having to use the restroom really bad, rushing trying to get done. Nothing ever goes right.

Great tips, already knew them all but then after you disassemble/reassemble enough locks you will see the whole list at one point or another if you aren't careful and understand how things work. Great vid. Tips may save other people a headache!

We put “round uppers” when we have to ream a cylinder and there’s a lot of keys that have to go to the lock, for example home depot and lowes key copys.

Common trick and sometimes we have to that. Note: I cut 10+ keys by code and have the customer replace any problems keys with my new keys.

This brings back memories. My best advice is to test it, fix it, check it, then test it two more times. I still do that on things I have done a hundred times. Mistakes happen. I think there is no way around learning some things the hard way, in the field, whenever incorporating a new skill. The only way to start is at the beginning, so when mistakes do occur I thank my customer for the chance to resolve the issue. Then I bend over backward to impress them with my response to whatever they are experiencing. Sometimes, it's a pain, but reputation is of the utmost importance in this business. Other advice would be to learn to multi-task and manage stress. It's a great career, but not always easy. It wouldn't be any fun if it was.

Do you have any tips for young locksmiths? I’m 19 and have a tough time remembering all the little details about making master systems. Also when a customer comes in and asks for lets say a simple re key for a Schlage lever set. I can get it apart, take out the Kik or mortise cylinder. Re key it. Put the pieces all together, but when I try to put the lever itself back on. The cylinder never goes in the right way. It’s either upside down or sideways. Then I have to get someone the help me. I know it’s easier when it’s in the door but I don’t have that privilege lmao.

@Chris X420 One big thing is to take note of how it was set up initially. Whether the tailpiece vertical or horizontal is the big one that will mess you up. You can take a picture or even mark the lock with a little scratch. Another thing that helps is to put the key in the cylinder while the lever or knob is still off. This can help wiggle things into place. Then when you need to turn the tailpiece to get past the detent your key is already in. The biggest thing is finding ways to remind yourself how it is supposed to go. I hope that helps. Another trick is that when screwing in a mortise cylinder a black key can make a great handle. It can help if you are not finding the right angle easily. It's also a good tool for getting one unstuck if it is fighting when you take it out. If that didn't answer your question then rephrase it and I'll try again.

Bosnia Bill @Bosniabill is a great lock picker, but he is BRUTAL on shims, and fumble fingers as hell gutting a lock hahahah. Probably why he is fun to watch, but seems I always learn something from him. Like watching this Video.

Also! I’ve kinda found when I’m rekeying an old/highly used lock, that if I lightly file the top of the cylinder and tops of the bottom pins the key turns easily and prevents binding? That a technique you heard of or recommend I still do? Obviously it’s not on every lock, mostly really cheap ones. Thanks Terry!

So I have been guilty of 2. I see alot of 5 and have even seen people crank on the key to the point of putting a corkscrew in the tail pice. We have only had to fire one employee in the 35 years of our company and it was for continuously doing number 9

Id say a #12 could've been forgetting to use follow up tool to hold pins in and you take the cylinder out and "blow out" the lock.

How much do crap locks like kwikset cost if re pinning is a viable option? I re lever things like chubb 5 lever or detainer series , but for a standard pin tumbler in the uk it isn't worth doing.

Not always the cost of the lock. Its performing a service for the customer. A kwikset lock cost around $15 dollars. I charge $15 dollars to rekey that lock, of coarae I have a 5 lock minimum. But lets say the customer has 5 locks. He can go buy all new locks for $75 or he can pay me $75 to come and rekey the locks for him and all he has to do is sit on the couch and relax.

@@321981jdm so my point was valid ,for a single lock it is not a financially viable option. I get cylinders the quality of quick set with 3 keys for less than £5 so it is never really worth me re pinning crap like that.

what does it mean that it is not 'timed properly' (on #4) at 4:55? "The tail piece is timed wrong to the deadbolt."

It means instead of opening the bolt when you turn the key, it closes it. Problem is, locks are key retaining. So instead of locking it and removing the key, it stays in the lock. In that case just leave a sign asking people not to unlock the door with the key you left in it. Problem solved.

I was taught to do the opposite of what he said. I was told to always have bolt closed and then grab tail piece and rotate as far as possible (clockwise or counter clockwise) depending on which side the hinges are on. Always rotate towards hinges. Has always come out timed correctly for me 🤷‍♂️

It’s a Schlage tail piece tool, you can find them online for fairly cheap

Hi, Mr. Locksmith. I'm a fan of yours. Love your very well educational videos. I just wanted to mention that, I notice the most of the cylinder bibles, specifically schlage, I pronounce shlage with the sh sound as in show. Anyway, I notice that the cylinder shell, has a slight perfusion sticking out, that usually tells me, that the opposite end of the indentation is the front of the lock. I could be wrong on that, but so far it has not failed me.
