@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho80092 ай бұрын
Yes accuracy is important, but out West, speed translates to flatter shooting and energy. The velocity should match the bullet makers tested cartridge results for your choice of and the size of the intended game.
@PassivePortfolios2 ай бұрын
@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 my experience is that the velocity data of ammo and bullet makers is exaggerated. So don't be surprised if your loads can't reach those velocity levels or are less than ideally accurate if they do. An extra 150 FPS will not get you meaningful additional range and the game will never know the difference. Good luck during hunting season but you have a nice rig perfectly suited for long range deer hunting so you should have no problem harvesting your buck with whichever load you choose.

According to what Hornady, bryan litz, and hodgdon have said.... pressure equals velocity. so, when looking at their load data, the max velocity shown in the manual is where max pressure is at, not necessarily the powder charge weight. so you may be using the max listed charge and not getting the max velocity. That's most likely because you're not at maximum pressure. so, in your case, you may be able to just add some powder and get the velocities you want, dont you think? Or no? if you haven't, you should listen to bryan litz's #61 or #62 podcast about the effects of humidity on powder. It's quite interesting and eye-opening. the aforementioned podcast and his other podcast about barrel break-in and life cycle shed some light on the discrepancies we see in bullet velocity.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009Ай бұрын
I have only gone over suggested powder maximum, using the bullet manufactures load data, when other resources have max load discrepancies with specific powders. Case inspection and chronograph precision numbers, as well as point of impact (groups) dictate whether results are satisfactory. I rely almost exclusively on my one rifle at a time, one testing procedure at a time, for my own validations. It may not be as scientific, or empirical evidence as the sources that you mention, but it works for me and I share the results here, ie: good and bad. Environmental conditions are beyond my control, therefore not a primary consideration. Thanks for your well informed information here and for watching.

Heavier bullets tend to be more accurate for .25-06. I don't reload, but various 100gr and 117gr rounds all give me near MOA accuracy at 100yards, but 120gr gives me a ragged hole. Speed is nice, but it definitely isn't everything. If you want ideal accuracy with high-speed 100gr bullets, you may need a custom barrel with an odd twist rate.

The 25-06 is a fine western caliber, BUT...I'd keep trying diff powders....My 60 year old 6mm Rem Model 700 BDL is a .3-/.5 MOA Muley Whacker with 4831 pushing out a 100gr spire pt. at a fraction over 3200 fps...weighs right around 7.8 lbs. with the 3-9 Redfield I put on it 60 years ago :) And, though at the moment I don't recall ever taking a second shot at anything but paper ;), on a Good day, from the bench, more often than not it will still print a 3 round group that you can cover with a dime at a hundred. AND, I don't need a recoil pad for anything other than stretching my length of pull a bit. Btw, I've ALWAYS reloaded for this rifle. Otoh, I've known friends now passed, who used the 25-06 to take everything up to Bull Elk, but seems to me they were using round nose bullets a lot heavier than 100gr. Has the .25 bullet market leaned out? One last thing, doesn't the weight of your chrono hanging out there on the barrel affect your accuracy? Browning used to produce barrels with an adjustable weight at the end for the exact reason of tuning the harmonics to maximize accuracy. My BDL is bedded to the stock, and I had to work up my reloads to get it where it is now. Having said all that, your last reloader group is certainly nothing to scoff at , you can obviously SHOOT :) Good vid. 👍

accuracy first anyday speed is nice and crucial for kinetic energy and bullet performance but is an animal any deader at 3170 compared to 33?? Also a guy needs to remember the numbers a company boasts are never going to be what you achieve ! your chrono may read a bit slower and possibly even faster speeds ! the variants between where they collected their data for their marketing numbers and the elevation, humidity, air density, wind , rifle , brass primer , neck tension so many variables that make it impossible to match advertised marketing numbers . It becomes a fine balance of speed and accuracy a notch or two back from max pressure. I admit I do not know everything ,I have only been reloading 47 years on my own but started helping and watching and learning 50 years ago at age 13 . btw I like your rifle the 25-06 is a sweet round ! good hunting !!
