The colour green was used in Ireland back in the 1600s to represent the Catholic landowners who were rising up against the English crown, not because the Irish ate grass. Ireland’s history doesn’t start and end at the famine, it’s a lot more complex and interesting. Even now orange represents Protestant, and green represents Catholic, hence the Catholic St Patrick is associated with green
@carrorallison76565 ай бұрын
Blue was the first colour associated with St. Patrick.
@Vonononie5 ай бұрын
@@carrorallison7656 true, but the use of Azure Blue was also tied up with English and Scottish symbolisms of claims (it’s still used on English coats of arms today). As the Irish independence movement progressed the Catholic green became a symbol of independence so became associated with the national saint (and the flag). But it’s much more complex than that and the various symbols and colours used in England and Ireland over the centuries would need multiple books. I really wanted to make the point that the green represents Catholics (and independence), not eating grass

Some pharmaceutical companies extracted substances from ergot to make certain drugs. In about 1970, a local poor farmer had a rye crop just load up with ergot. They binned it and spent all winter hand sorting the ergot from that grain. For every ice cream pail (5 quarts) they received $1500. They paid off the farm, remodeled house and barn, upgraded equipment, new vehicles, kids got new clothes and college savings. I went out there once to do a school project and stay. After chores and dinner and doing the homework she taught me how to pick ergot wearing a grain dust mask, tweezers and a magnifying glass…

Charcuterie: Sounds like haggis, the national food of Scotland, but illegal in the United States. Canned olives: Back in the beginning of canned food (actual cans, not jars) lead solder was used to seal the cans. Some cans were tinned on the inside to keep acidic foods, like tomatoes, from turning metallic tasting. The Greely Expedition spent three years stuck in Arctic ice looking for the Northwest Passage. A number of the sailors succumbed to lead poisoning from the canned food. Ergot fungus: Fungus is still giving people hallucinations--magic mushrooms! Sugar: was new to Europe when Columbus brought it back. It became wildly popular (and expensive) so only the rich could afford it. Guess who got cavities in their teeth like never before! Corn flakes were an accident at Kellogg Brothers clinic. Corn gruel dripped from the stirring spoon onto the hot stove top instantly cooking in a thin layer. Rather than waste it, someone tried eating it... Green was a very difficult color to tint fabrics, wallpaper, and paint in the mid-1800's, until the invention of Sheele's Green, a chemical dye. Unfortunately, one of the ingredients was arsenic, making things coming to human touch, or even dropping fine dust, deadly. It wasn't banned in the U.K. until the 1950's. Lettuce as an aphrodisiac: Is THAT why rabbits are so prolific breeders??? Or is it just the phrase, Let us! Furbies: like the time the CIA implanted a cat with listening devices to spy? Very short-lived--the prototype was run over by a taxicab within a minute of being released! Ventriloquists: I have a VERY conversational dentist; I asked him if he ever had a ventriloquist patient to carry on a conversation!

There is actually a fun myth around why the Ancient Egyptians considered lettuce an aphrodisiac. It was sacred to and considered a favourite of Min, the god of fertility because the species of lettuce that they ate would ooze a white, milky substance when it was cut. For another myth around lettuce and its properties, look up the striving of Set and Horus.

The ancient Egyptians would have definitely not liked lettuce at the point, which it was producing the milky substance. Once lettuce has gone to flower it gets intensely bitter. Sugar as a concept does not make people fat, but the way it is incorporated into everything that doesn’t need to have. It means many extra grams of carbohydrates that we do not need to be consuming. Corn is heavily subsidized in America and is very cheap and it is made into, high fructose corn syrup, which is added to a lot of food because it is so cheap. The over consumption, and the unaware consumption of sugar does make people fat because we’re eating way more calories than we should be for the same dish if it were served as originally written in its recipe
