@sergiofigueroa93114 жыл бұрын
Hey David. Might be three years late, but I could perhaps help you with a bit of etymology/semantics: Que onda: come from the 60s. Literally means "what wave," as in radio wave. You're being asked in what frequency are you in? High or low? Or, are you doing good or bad? How are you? Aguas: means "water!" It means to be careful. When it rains hard, what do you do? You cover your head and walk carefully. When someone says "aguas," they're saying "watch out!" Simon: It's a play on "si." Because the name Simon starts with "si," the name became synonymous with "yes." Chela: No idea! Some say it derives from the Mayan word that means blonde, as in the color of the beer Esta ca(ny)on: It's a play on the phrase "esta cabron." It's used to not say "cabron," which is a cuss word. It has a cornucopia of meanings, from "it's rough," "it's bad," "it's good," it's a pedestrian phrase. Feria: It means fair, as in a town fair. In the olden days, people used to go to the fairs to bet on horse races, cock fights, gamble; things that involved making money. So, feria became synonymous with money. Neta: Spanish for "net." When one regards the "net" of something (not the mean, or the difference), one gets to the core of such thing. So, "neta" means truth. "Es la neta," means "it's the truth." Wey: variance of "buey," an ox. It became a way for people to call themselves, such a friend, guy, homey, dude, etc. When one says it, we imply that we are saying "dumb ox," because oxen are not that smart. But, people disregard the insult. Orale: It's used all over Mexico, but it's actually a word derived from Chicano slang. It's a distortion of "all right!" No Manches: a play on "no mames." It literally means "don't suck." But, it has multiple meanings, depending on the context. Andale: Verb form of "andar," to move forward. Frech say, "allez allez." Sale: it's a play on the word "si." Just another way of saying yes. Chavo: short for "chavalo," a word used teenagers from indigenous roots. Morro: a morro is a rock outcrop out in the sea. It derives from Spanish naval slang during the colonial period, and used to say little kid. Vieja: Spanish for "old," as in my old lady, or that old hag, which are used in English. Chilango: Chile con cara de chango :P Tocayo: people with the same name. It's has ancient Roman roots Jeta: word for lips. But, "jetas," is the word used for animal lips. In Spanish, the same "body parts" between humans and animals have different names to distinguish between them. but, people use them interchangeably as a form of slang. Jeta=labios. Patas=pies. Buche=chest. Cola = gluteos. Pelos=cabello. Cruda: Spanish word for "raw." So, when you're hung over, you're like in a raw state. Rola: slang for song. Its roots come the Victrola, the first widely available music playback systems.

Another word that we mexicans use a lot and is becoming now more popular among the other Latin American countries is "ahorita", from the word "ahora" (now), ahorita can mean now, right now, in 5 minutes ago (or in the future), in an hour or so. Example: → _Ahorita estoy comiendo._ → Right now i'm eating. → _Ahorita vamos a ir la tienda._ → We are going to the store/supermarket (in about 5 minutes to 1 or 2 hours from now). 👍

It's funny how "ahorita" literally means "right now " and "luego, luego" means "not now, then" and we mexicans use them the opossite way. If I say "ahorita" it's implicit that it might actually never happen but if I say "luego, luego" I'm saying "let's do do it right away".

Chicano Spanish deserves a special platform and attention. Great contributor to both English and Spanish evolution. Many words are now official in the dictionary official and not of both languages. It is culture on its own right. Not just language. Traditions and way of life in general .

Where I grew up Chilango in the slang way means more or less a gruffy person. You don't just call any Mexican person a Chilango.. It was more of a reference growing up to tease the people who where younger then yourself. At least that's how I remember it growing up. Tu..eres...una...chilango!😄 And what about Pinchi..whey Or Chinga...tu madre.. Shilanga... Yahaca... With a slang uts Yahakitha... Cavron...or maybe it's spelt Cabron... My favorite is Bago...or maybe uts vago... Sorry never been good at spelling in Spanish onky learned to speak some from friends and family but never to write it.
