Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell has returned to the unfriendly skies to save the world and try and prove he’s the best of the best in Top Gun Maverick and he’s brought two bags full of nostalgia and extreme methods of filmmaking. Filmed with real world F-18s with real pilots flying around pretend pilots seated behind them, the adrenaline fueled sequel is full of nods and tributes as well as an attention to detail that’s staggering. Maverick faces his own obsolescence, his shortcomings as a surrogate father, and the ramifications of his whirlwind romantic life when he was younger. All of this unfolds in the place made famous by the first movie, Fightertown USA. A new crop of the best of the best are gathered to make them even more bestier with the help of Maverick who has still not bucked his authority bucking ways. Old faces like Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer return and are joined by new faces including Miles Teller as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s REO last seen singing Great Balls of Fire with his father in the first movie. From real world planes to unreal theoretical planes, specific background props, and even a shout out to another 80s movie all together, Top Gun Maverick is an old school thrill ride made with new school techniques. We’ll take a dive into all the nods to the original as well as some of the details and behind the scenes secrets that made this big movie possible. All the scenes of the planes landing and taking off from aircraft carriers were filmed on the USS Lincoln that was the ship my uncle served his last deployment on and he was there while they were filming. There are so many reasons as to why it's pretty obvious that everyone on that flightdeck are actually real sailors doing their job. One of them being that aircraft carriers are one the most dangerous places to work. A couple of my buddies got paid to be in those scenes and all of them will tell you that Tom Cruise is an asshat. But aside from that, great movie.

Good point for those not knowledgable about the Navy and its' supercarriers but I immediately recognized the Lincoln bobblehead as referring to the specific supercarrier as the one which they were shooting the movie on. The Topgun movies help to educate as much as to entertain.

I really liked the movie and it brought back a lot of memories of flying the F-18. By the end of the movie I was soaked in sweat like I used to be at the end of a dogfight! Sure there were some glaring technical inaccuracies, but there were also some subtle things that only a fighter pilot might catch- like paddling off the G-limiter before the 10g pull. The F-18 was limited to 8.0 G by the flight control computer but you could activate a paddle switch on the stick to override it. That was only to be used in an emergency because it could over stress the aircraft. Very entertaining movie overall though!

The Darkstar experimental aircraft Maverick flies at the beginning of the movie was actually designed by the Lockheed Skunkworks engineers, who were brought in by the movie's producers just for that purpose, to make it as realistic as possible. I understand the Skunkworks guys really like doing the job, because they didn't have to be completely bound by the limits of reality.

For item #2, at 1:30, you show the intro text displayed at the original movie and go onto explain the two montages were almost completely identical, other than the aircraft. You missed a huge change. The text in Maverick reads ."...the handful of men and women who graduated were the best fighter pilots in the world". A little foreshadowing that it ain't just a boys club anymore. Like the scrolling intro in Star Wars being so iconic, I think most people just saw the text and didn't notice the change because it was so recognizable.

Actually, buzzing the island on the carrier makes sense in the film because Maverick wanted to closely and visually inspect the carrier's deck - you can see him eyeballing the barricade as he flies over. Maverick says they can't get away from the 5th Gen fighters in the F-14... Actually, the Tomcat is faster then the 5th Gens and could easily pull away Look at Mav's old F-14A in the fake scene for the trailer and as seen at 5:52 - it only has Maverick on the side and not Merlin's

They had the legacy F-18A/B C/D but in this movie they have the F-18 E/F Super Hornets which are actually a completely different airplane. In 1986 the Blue Angels were still flying A-4 Skyhawks and switched to the F-18C in 1987. They just switched to the F-18E last year.

you really should look into what you are attempting to claim. legacy f18 and f18 super hornets might as well be different aircraft. hugely updated avionics, better engines, smaller radar cross section etc. they arent really that comparable. Boeing and Northrop Grumman are funding a new advanced super hornet which is suppose to be even better than before. smaller RCS better engines and stealth extended range.

There were tons of technical and operational errors in the movie (most I noticed while watching, some when I thought of it afterwards) but still a fun movie. I mean, the original Top Gun saw AO guys loading inert missiles on Tomcats launching for a combat mission, so we expect to see similar obvious errors in Maverick. The only instances of this video I didn't notice was the Porsche continuity and the well hidden Aston Martin (but I was drooling over the P-51 Mustang anyway). As a pilot, air traffic controller, dispatcher--all by license and practice--I did enjoy the movie. It's really impossible to expect an aviation movie to be free of technical errors, so I wasn't looking for perfection. I mean, Memphis Belle is a great movie but it isn't at all like the crew's last mission and Apollo 13 is one of my favorites but Hanks mispronounces Fra Mauro every time, the crew didn't fight, and of course there's the misquoted "Houston, we've had a problem," although that was by design. Being an expert in a field like aviation just means you'll be picky whether or not you intend to, but it also means you can get even more excited about movies like this!

Which means all the jesting about callsigns (Baby On Board) was just the actors giving each other a hard time over their callsign choices. Except Hangman being Bagman, which very much relates to his character's personality. So the actor either did a really thoughtful job of picking his name, or it was more of a group consensus. I wonder if it was the case that the actors collectively picked each other's callsigns? I think that's more how it works in the Navy, your classmates give you your callsign.
@teapoweredyugi
@teapoweredyugi 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that the callsigns were chosen by the cast. Though from what I understand about callsigns, (correct me if I'm wrong!) They're not chosen - they're gifted, usually after some sort of either embarrassing and/or juvenile event early in their career as an aviator.
