I'm proud to say that I knew about over half of these events, but I was still surprised by the ones I did not. Here's a strange fact that sounds fake but isn't: Once a ship of the English navy was defeated by a cavalry charge. Here's the story: In August 12, 1806, the English crown was trying to take control over the port of Buenos Aires, a Spanish crown colony at the time, to incorporate it into their own colonies, as a sort of Hong Kong of South America (they never actually intended to take over the whole colony, they just wanted the port and all the commerce it would bring because they could tax it). During the battle to retake Buenos Aires by the Spanish, a young cadet named Miguel de Guemes, who grew up to be a leader of the rebeles against Spain during the South American Wars of independence, was in charge of a cavalry unit. An English frigate, the "Justine" was in a river of Buenos Aires when suddenly the tide changed and the river became nothing but a small stream, getting the ship to get stuck in the mud with no possibility of moving until they waited for the river's tide to change again. Guemes and his cavalry unit saw this, and charged at the ship since their horses now could just gallop up to the ship thanks to the low tide (the mud made it difficult, of course, but still possible). They failed in their first attempt as the crew of the Justine fired their cannons at the approaching cavarly. But after regrouping, Guemes led a second cavalry charge that was successful, he and his men boarded the Justine from their horses and took the entire crew as POWs. And that is how a ship was defeated by a cavalry charge.

Fun fact: mammoths may still have been around even later than we thought. Native American tradition talks of giant megafauna. But since corpses decompose fast unless fossilized (which is extremely rare) or other wise preserved, we have no tangible evidence to back up these claims. Wouldn’t surprise me though.

However, the thing that Lincoln is most remembered for is something he didn't do. Read the Emancipation Proclamation - it freed slaves only in those parts of the South in rebellion against the Union; territory occupied by the Union Army and the entire North was excluded, so it only covered territory Lincoln had no authority over.

Were the first settlers and slaves in the US considered to be American? If citizenship can be defined as your country of birth rather than the country you move to and apply for citizenship, then Cleopatra WAS an Egyptian.
@carlosvillanueva8530

No slaves weren't counted as citizens until the "two thirds law" because, they weren't considered people, they were considered property. Settlers also were not considered Americans, or else Van Buren wouldn't be the first American President. George Washington is the First President of America, but he isn't the First American President, that would be Martin Van Buren. But I 100% agree with you that if Cleopatra was born in Egypt, she was an Egyptian.

Urine: In the Middle Ages, urine was used to wash woolen clothes, and to set hair. Dentures: George Washington did not actually use wooden teeth, except possibly as a temporary while his current dentures were worked on. He did, however, reportedly buy teeth from his slaves. Avengers: Don't forget the TV series The Avengers, starring Patrick Macnee and Dianna Rigg. Ketchup/catsup: Coca Cola was invented as a hangover remedy, served at drug store sod fountains, where it was accidentally mixed with soda water and the rest is history. It also contained cocaine, hence coca. Pepsi Cola was invented as a stomach/bowel remedy. Discover America: Siberians came to America circa 10,000--15,000 years ago, and were the ancestors of "Native" American and In Inuits. The Chinese and Polynesians are believed to have been here early, too.

My family was given the keys to a city in Virginia when we went there over summer vacation to visit my Uncle Marshall, who was the city's mayor. I was only five at the time, but literally all we did to earn it is be related to the mayor (in a very obscure way) and drive all the way from California. We had it displayed on our coffee table until my dad split. But it was literally a huge, gold skeleton key with a plaque on it saying (I think) "to the Californian (our huge family's last name) family on the occasion of their visit to (town)". When I was five, I thought it meant it magically opened every door inside the town. Silly little me

Mike, I am amazed how many names and places in multiple languages you are able to pronounce. Now, tell us how many takes does it require to get them right? Hmm, there must be a List 25 you can about languages. What do you think?

Almost 10 years ago, the man from my town who I gave my cat's other 2 kittens to 7 years earlier, somehow won £108 million in the Euromillions lottery. I then played the same lottery due to my connection to him. 6 weeks later I came up with the next set of winning jackpot numbers, but a lack of pen at the picking station made me buy Lucky Dips instead. Then ALL my masterminded numbers got drawn in the draw. This is decillions to one in odds. Sounds fake, but it happened.

I once wrote the UK lottery numbers on the edge of a newspaper just before the draw and got 5 of them. However i hadn't bought a ticket. I'd probably have picked different numbers if I had anyway.

@@felixjones9198 I could live with that maybe. Imagine quite a few have done similar. What happened to me was immaculate and deeply disturbing. I'm not supposed to be able to work out the lottery numbers though, if I decide to play it, and believe I am owed the prize if I can prove I was able to do that, regardless of if I bought the ticket for the draw. I bought enough tickets. Did what shouldn't be possible in the game. You can read exactly how it happened to me if you like. It's the long pinned comment on this video. Takes about 15 minutes to read and understand it. It's complicated to follow though. It's the damn 10 year anniversary of it all. about now.. watch?v=XLpodkU9f7Q

The fact People try to use BCE and CE Instead of BC and AD cuz The latter is offensive due to its connotation for the importance of the birth of Christ is so silly to me. Because they’re still using the birth of Christ as the’ pivotal calendar’ date. They didn’t change anything they just changed calling it “before Christ”. And whether you believe that Christ was the son of God or not you got to admit his birth is a pretty important thing in the history of mankind.. It’s like how we try to say on housed instead of homeless or Unalive instead of killed.. Just silly

The urine factoid is a bit misleading. Urine was indeed collected, but it was used by dyers to make dyes permanent. For mouthwash, it was definitely DYI..

I will honestly say that the Norse did in fact discover North America. According to my grandparents before they passed away; some did stay and live in North America in what is now called Ohio at the very least. A couple of them were ancestors of mine.

Do the Bucs still sing at football games, 'Make the (other team) walk the plank, and throw them into Tampa Bay!"? My first pro football game was Atlanta at Tampa. Your shirts always make me giggle. Not an anti-Tampa fan, but I did move to Atlanta.

Well, of course the Romans used urine as a mouth wash. They needed something strong to wash away the taste of the mouse brains they used as toothpaste.
