I'm proud to say that I knew about over half of these events, but I was still surprised by the ones I did not. Here's a strange fact that sounds fake but isn't: Once a ship of the English navy was defeated by a cavalry charge. Here's the story: In August 12, 1806, the English crown was trying to take control over the port of Buenos Aires, a Spanish crown colony at the time, to incorporate it into their own colonies, as a sort of Hong Kong of South America (they never actually intended to take over the whole colony, they just wanted the port and all the commerce it would bring because they could tax it). During the battle to retake Buenos Aires by the Spanish, a young cadet named Miguel de Guemes, who grew up to be a leader of the rebeles against Spain during the South American Wars of independence, was in charge of a cavalry unit. An English frigate, the "Justine" was in a river of Buenos Aires when suddenly the tide changed and the river became nothing but a small stream, getting the ship to get stuck in the mud with no possibility of moving until they waited for the river's tide to change again. Guemes and his cavalry unit saw this, and charged at the ship since their horses now could just gallop up to the ship thanks to the low tide (the mud made it difficult, of course, but still possible). They failed in their first attempt as the crew of the Justine fired their cannons at the approaching cavarly. But after regrouping, Guemes led a second cavalry charge that was successful, he and his men boarded the Justine from their horses and took the entire crew as POWs. And that is how a ship was defeated by a cavalry charge.

However, the thing that Lincoln is most remembered for is something he didn't do. Read the Emancipation Proclamation - it freed slaves only in those parts of the South in rebellion against the Union; territory occupied by the Union Army and the entire North was excluded, so it only covered territory Lincoln had no authority over.

Were the first settlers and slaves in the US considered to be American? If citizenship can be defined as your country of birth rather than the country you move to and apply for citizenship, then Cleopatra WAS an Egyptian.
@carlosvillanueva8530 Жыл бұрын
No slaves weren't counted as citizens until the "two thirds law" because, they weren't considered people, they were considered property. Settlers also were not considered Americans, or else Van Buren wouldn't be the first American President. George Washington is the First President of America, but he isn't the First American President, that would be Martin Van Buren. But I 100% agree with you that if Cleopatra was born in Egypt, she was an Egyptian.

Urine: In the Middle Ages, urine was used to wash woolen clothes, and to set hair. Dentures: George Washington did not actually use wooden teeth, except possibly as a temporary while his current dentures were worked on. He did, however, reportedly buy teeth from his slaves. Avengers: Don't forget the TV series The Avengers, starring Patrick Macnee and Dianna Rigg. Ketchup/catsup: Coca Cola was invented as a hangover remedy, served at drug store sod fountains, where it was accidentally mixed with soda water and the rest is history. It also contained cocaine, hence coca. Pepsi Cola was invented as a stomach/bowel remedy. Discover America: Siberians came to America circa 10,000--15,000 years ago, and were the ancestors of "Native" American and In Inuits. The Chinese and Polynesians are believed to have been here early, too.

@@civicstar982 the Catholic Church codified the first Bible in 395 AD. The Pope is not the Church but a visible head of the Church. Jesus Christ is the actual head of the Catholic Church. We had it displayed on our coffee table until my dad split.
